Fishing

The document summarizes advantages and disadvantages of developing the fishing industry in areas like Bangladesh and Pakistan. It discusses how fishing can provide more food and employment, improve exports and infrastructure, and contribute to other industries. However, it also notes challenges like needing education for skilled labor, costs of technology, water pollution, and sustainability issues with overfishing. Specific fishing areas in Pakistan are also outlined. Fish farming methods are described, including selecting locations, constructing ponds, and rearing fish.

FISHING

Notes for Geo

By : Husnain Ali Abid

Advantages of developing the fishing industry : - ( Any Named area such as Bangladesh )
More food
Healthier food / more protein etc.
More employment / more income/ less unemployment- So higher living standards
Exports to – or of – (e.g. shrimps to Japan, dried fish to Middle East, to Sri Lanka)- improves balance of
payment
Better communications with – (e.g. better roads, telecommunications in Balochistan)- so contributes to
the development of areas
More education by teaching skills
More technology – introduction of engines, machines, radar, satellite navigation
Growth of other industries e.g. Processing, boat building- chances of employment for women as
ancillaries.
It is Sustainable -as fish are ‘free’, should not ‘run out’

Disadvantages of developing the fishing industry :- ( Any Named area such as Bangladesh or
Pakistan )

Education is needed – lack of skilled labour

Technology is required – costs money, imported
Water pollution – kills, damages fish, Pakistan’s rivers are polluted, mangroves polluted
Restrictions – marine fishing banned in June and July
Quality – some products banned by western countries
– can be poisonous / makes them unsuitable to eat
Income – not large, delayed profit
Sustainability – issues of over-fishing by foreign trawlers
Note: This can include fish farming / freshwater fishing (Each point of 2 marks)

Fishing areas of Pakistan :- ( Not an important question )

Makran (Balochistan) coast vs Indus Delta (Sindh) Coast:

-Accounts 30% of total marine catch - Accounts 70% of total marine catch
- Gwadar, Pasni, Ormara, are important - Rich in fish food brought down by River
centers for fishing indus
-mid and deep water range of fishing - It has better export and processing
-Dried, salted to transport Karachi facilities
for export

FISH FARMING (also known as aqua culture)

Features of the fish farm:

- Large/big/extensive area is used
- Grid pattern/regular pattern
- Ponds/lakes/toba
- Several/at least 4 ponds are built together.
- Rectangular ponds/long (and thin)
- (Ponds separated by) earthen banks/embankments/raised edges/mud walls/brick/paved road/path
- Line of trees for shade so as to prevent evaporation of water.
- Rough ground/bare ground. (1 Mark for each point)

How can the physical topography of the area make it easy to construct the ponds?
- Flat land/plain land/Large area - Easy to use machinery for digging out ponds
- Unconsolidated rock/soil/alluvial deposits/soft soil
- Easy to dig/excavate
- Impervious alluvium/clay/rock/high water table so retains water/water collects. (1 Mark for each point)

Where the material come from that has has been used to make the banks of the ponds?
From the area dug out for the ponds

(b) Why is fish farming of growing importance in________? ( Any Named area such as Pakisyan )

Note: Credit will be given if you name a species of fresh water fish reared on fish farms.
Fish bred:
Grass/moore/rahu/silver/tallah (thalla)/manaseer/palla/trout/carp
Why:
- Growing population- so more fish needed to fulfill local demand.
- Lack of protein in diet- fish accounts important part of diet
- Education on nutrition- more people are increasing its consumption
- Fish are rich in protein/low in cholesterol- good for people of all ages
- Provides employment- improves living standard
- Water available from irrigation schemes/lakes/reservoirs

Describe the methods of producing fish at fish farms:

Fish farming (also known as aqua culture)

-fish seeds (eggs) reared in small tanks in nurseries and hatcheries for distribution.
-lakes, rivers, dams and man made ponds are selected by people to rear fish.
-water is provided through canals and tube wells, fish feed is bought from factories.
-loans and technical know how is provided by Government.

Name fishing ports on the coast of Balochistan. (Learn locations on map)

Jiwani, Gwadar, Pasni, Ormara, Sonmiani [2]

Name main types of Inland fish caught by fishermen:

Manseer, rahu Palla trout Thalla [2]

Explain why more people are employed in inland fisheries than marine fishing.
More people live near rivers, lakes etc.
Marine fishing only possible on coastal areas
Balochistan coast is not developed

Name types of marine fish caught by fishermen:

Shark Herring Drum Mackerel Croaker Sardine Cat fish Pomfret Skate Ray [2]
(c) Describe how marine fishing methods can be improved. [5]
Boats with engines
Can go further offshore
Can stay at sea for several days
Cold storage on boat
Mechanised equipment / winches
Nylon / bigger / stronger/ nets or ropes
Weather forecasts
Sonar to locate fish
Satellite navigation
Training / education

Describe subsistence fishing methods. [3]

For Family’s need

Small/wooden boats- can go only upto a depth of 15m.
Traditional/hand made nets- so less fish could be caught.
Done on small scale- so lack of machines/simple engines
Rod and line method
Sailing/rowing boats
Fish kept in baskets of ice
Fishing near the coast with family members

(b) (i) Explain why subsistence fishing is an important activity

important food source for the family / community,

high in protein increasing its food value,
allows settlement / life in areas where agriculture is difficult / impossible

Commercial Fishing:
For selling purpose
Engines on boat- Can go further offshore + can stay at sea for several days
Gill netters/nylon nets/stronger nets- so more fish caught
Provision of loans to local fishermen- so chilled storage on boat, trawlers could be bought
Education/training for fishermen- so more productive workers [4]

(ii) Suggest how regulations for commercial fishing can result in fish being thrown
away.

(ii) suggestions why fishermen discard some of their catch:

catch is greater than the quota,
fish caught are smaller than the regulations allow,
type of fish caught is not permitted,
types of fish caught are of limited commercial value.
two suggestions along these lines.
2 @ 1 mark

How can fish be stored and processed onshore?

In ice/cold storage/refridgerated
Gutted
Canned
Dried
Frozen
Salted
Fish-fingers/other product
Fish oil [3]

(ii) Why is fish processing called ‘value-added’?

Can be sold for more money/more profit [1]

How does the poor infrastructure of Balochistan make development of the fishing industry
difficult?
Poor roads/no railway for transport- fishermen coming with the catch can not move and most of it go
wasted, difficult to transport finished goods and raw material to the factory
Lack of electricity/power for processing- as machineries could not be used
Poor telecommunications to markets
Lack of fresh/clean water for processing
Lack of housing- so less skilled and unskilled labor

(c) Explain how problems are caused by overfishing

consequences of overfishing include:

insufficient fish / no young fish left in the sea to breed,
fish numbers fall over the years so that commercial fishing cannot be sustained, leads to
income / job losses in coastal communities,
fishermen more likely to search out new fishing grounds,
more and more pressure on ocean resources resulting in less fish caught to eat,
disrupts the food chain.
three consequences such as these leading to problems.
3 @ 1 mark

(ii) Why is it difficult to prevent illegal fishing?

reasons include:
large areas of sea / ocean to patrol,
expensive to do checks both in the ports and at sea,
authorities lack the resources / technology needed,
corruption of officials / authorities turning a blind eye (especially in remote areas),
uncooperative fishermen.
one reason such as these.
