This chapter discusses the results of a qualitative study involving two summa cum laude graduates and their experiences with challenges and success. The study identified six themes: 1) being motivated to pursue studies diligently, 2) having a genuine passion for learning, 3) aspiring to achieve academic distinction, 4) putting in maximum effort, 5) benefits of extracurricular activities, and 6) self-reflection. CHAPTER IV

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter present and discusses the result of this qualitative study. This
involved two (2) Summa Cum Laude graduate that have faced challenges and success
in regards to being a Summa Cum Laude graduate.

RESULT

Problem 1: What does it mean to become a summa cum laude graduate?

DISCUSSION

The findings of this research study revealed that the university student

graduates had a significant experience in terms of achieving Summa Cum Laude

distinction. The researchers had constructed two (6) themes, namely: (1) Motivated

in Pursuing Study, (2) Being Passionate, (3) Aspiration, (4) Doing their best, (5)

Advantages in engaging in extracurricular act., (6) Self reflection.

Motivated in pursuing study. This theme focuses on Summa Cum Laude

graduates having a motivation in order to pursue their studies. In the realm of education,

motivation is a vital element that enables students to engage in academic activities effectively.

Motivation can be described as a stimulus that provides energy to behavior, guiding and

maintaining it. This encompasses goals and tasks that require motivation to initiate and

sustain action. For actions to be performed for an extended period of time, they require a

significant amount of effort and persistence. Motivation comprises interconnected aspects

such as beliefs, values, perceptions, information, and actions. It can also result in various

behaviors, and it is crucial to recognize its significance in an educational context (Suhag,

Larik, Tagar and Solangi, 2016). The summa cum laude graduates were able to excel

in their class by having a motivation in persuing their studies. Two participants shared

their experiences on having a motivation that help them excel in their class. This was

the observed following statements:

“kayo awarding bibigyan kayo ng medal so syempre andun yung per section

mo na gusto morin magka medal so andun yung feeling ko na nabuhay yung nakilala

yung importance ng ah pag nag practice yan ng certain kung ano man yung

competition na sinalihan mo nung nag aral kapa para meron paring parang kapalit

reward yon as early as grade 2nd grade” [M. P1: 62-66]

“I think yung parang situation nayon na inaaral mo na talaga yung gusto mo

na passionate ka ayun yung nag push saken na hindi naman particularly target yung

award.” [K. P2:74-76]

The participants also shared:

“section editor ako ng ah culture in lifestyle section ng pahayagan yon the

following year after grad naging ah associate editor na ng pahayagan and feeling

ko malaki yung ah factor nya kasi unang una mas lumawak yung pers ah mas

lumawak perspective ko pag dating sa anu ba yung tunay na ah anu ba talaga yung

concept ng success yung tagumpay.” [M. P1: 283-287]

“oo, na di naman kailangan diba kasi sa experience natin, na hindi natin lagi

kailangan na may masama laging mangyari satin para ma motivate tayofor say na

siguro saken naman umm.. ano ba I think ano ba.. siguro may parts sakenna parang

gusto ko patunayan na kahit hindi ako naka pasa ng UP may ibubuga ako parang

ganon“ [K. P2;610-614]

The participants emphasized the significance of motivation, which involves

diverse factors from various angles. They demonstrated how accomplishments and

accolades can serve as driving forces for students to pursue their studies. Additionally,

they pointed out that a genuine passion for the subject can act as a powerful

motivator, fostering greater interest in the field of study. Maintaining a broader view

of success can also provide motivation to strive for it. Furthermore, the desire to

showcase one's abilities to others can significantly boost a student's determination to

excel in their studies and perform well in their academic endeavors.

Being Passionate. This theme revolves around the exceptional dedication and

enthusiasm exhibited by summa cum laude graduates towards their studies, which

significantly contributes to their outstanding performance in their classes. Being

passionate about learning is like having a burning curiosity and genuine excitement to

discover new things and develop new skills. It's that inner drive that pushes you to

explore different subjects, dig deeper into concepts, and broaden your understanding

of the world. The summa cum laude graduates manage to excel in their class by being

passionate about their learnings. Two participants shared their experience on how

being passionate in their studies help them achieve the distinction. This was observed

in the following statement:

“ano saken ah parang intriguing concept na parang meron palang scientific

way or process ng pag tulong na hindi lang pala sya suntok sa buwan meron ding

metodo mga teyorya na ginagawa dito and since yun nga syempre passionate ako

about sa social sciences” [K. P2: 97-100]

“napili ko sya kasi yun nga yung una na gusto kong tahakin” [M. P1: 134]

“Factor din talaga na magugustuhan mo kasi parang hindi ko alam kung sa

course ko lang ba sya or, ano kasi sya eh kumbaga history sya ng New York parang

ganon parang ma I intrigue karin may mga times den na ganon plus feeling ko ay

yung push factor nya den if sa mga prof den kapag nakikita mo na pashionate yung

prof mo sa ginagawa nila na hindi naman sya clear na nagtuturo pero gusto nya

talaga humingi ng star o kaya masipag talaga sya magturo” [M. P1:629-634]

“hindi ako yung sobrang studious, pero passionate ako about learning” [K.

P2:672]

“Factor din talaga na magugustuhan mo kasi parang hindi ko alam kung sa

course ko lang ba sya or, ano kasi sya eh kumbaga history sya ng New York parang

The participants emphasized that having a genuine passion for learning is a

key factor in achieving excellence. When you are truly passionate about learning, you

proactively seek out opportunities to broaden your knowledge, engage in critical

thinking, and apply what you have learned in real-life scenarios. It goes beyond

merely striving for good grades or external rewards; instead, it's about finding deep

joy and fulfillment in the process of gaining knowledge and honing your skills. This

internal fire of passion becomes the driving force that motivates you to learn and

grow, bringing a profound sense of satisfaction and personal achievement along the

way. As a result, this passion for learning becomes the catalyst for your success and

allows you to excel in your academic and personal endeavors

Aspiration. This theme focuses on how summa cum laude student aspire to

have an award/distinction that help them excel in their class. The aspiration for

academic awards is like having a burning desire and ambition to be recognized and

celebrated for your hard work and achievements in academics. It's about setting lofty

goals for yourself and putting in the utmost effort to excel in your studies, all with the

ultimate aim of earning prestigious awards and honors. The summa cum laude

graduates who attain such remarkable distinctions do so by having a deep yearning to

achieve a specific goal that constantly propelled them to go above and beyond. This

was observed in the following statement:

“yung kagustuhan ko nalang na mag ka magkaron ng academic distinction ay

yung lumabas yung ano ko first ah.. tawag don grades nung first sem for first term

yun dun ko nalang nakita na uy pede pala kaya naman pala edii… go mo na” [M. P1:

163-165]

The participants highlighted the significance of having a strong desire to

achieve a specific goal. Students with this aspiration are motivated by their curiosity

and a commitment to continuously get better. They are ready to invest the necessary

effort and dedication to exceed expectations and distinguish themselves from their

classmates. Striving for academic awards involves setting clear objectives, adopting

effective study habits, and actively seeking opportunities to showcase their academic

skills. These students actively participate in class, engage in discussions, and eagerly

seek feedback to improve their learning journey.

Doing their best. This theme focuses on how summa cum laude are doing

their best in their study that help them effectively stand out in their class. Putting

maximum effort means giving your absolute best and exerting all your energy, focus,

and dedication towards achieving a goal or completing a task. This was observed in

the following statement:

“Pero alam kong una palang gusto kong gawin yung best ko ayun yung I think

malinaw sakin na sa lahat ng ginagawa ko gusto ko ibigay yung best ko” [K. P2:

198-200]

The participants highlighted the importance of putting maximum effort in your

academic activities. Giving your best effort allows you to continuously learn, grow,

and improve. It helps you develop new skills, expand your knowledge, and discover

your true potential. By consistently doing your best, you challenge yourself to reach

higher levels of achievement and become the best version of yourself.

Advantages in engaging in extracurricular activity. This theme focuses on

how engaging in extracurricular activities help the summa cum laude graduate learn

and have a wider knowledge about everything. Engaging in extracurricular activities

is a crucial component of a comprehensive education. These activities provide

students with opportunities to apply their academic knowledge and skills in practical,

real-life situations. Furthermore, they offer a chance for students to reinforce and

solidify the lessons they learn within the classroom setting (Asvab,2023). This was

observed in the following statements:

“pati yung sa volunteer and ano sa siguro yung experience din talaga sakin

talagang di sya more on pinasama parang naka distract sa pag aaral ko kundi

sobrang naka supplement sobrang enriching talaga nya kasi syempre student coucil

katulad nga nung nabangit ni mark yung leadership prog leadership skills nya the

whole mo in the process yung ibat ibang skills pa sa just negotiating, advocating,

orgranizing tsaka madami mo talagang matutunan and got to work with ahm different

sectors and different classes sobrang uhm fulfilling din nya” [K. P2: 432-438]

“and yung sa pagiging volunteer ko naman ayun din talaga kasi very me…

me… medyo ano talaga sya ahm related sa course ko pag poprovide ng parang

tulong parang ano kasi ah naisip ko rin na yung mga halimbawa nasalihan naming

na activities for me ayun yung mga extra-curricular activities ayun pa yung mas

ikekwento ko kesa sa ah sa pag kwento ko kung pano ako naging summa cum laude

ganun kase parang ang nakikita ko kasi ah for me lang na yung parang ang mas

makakatulong den talaga sanyo ah lalo nahalimbawa kapag meron kang ahm mag

pepursue kana ng prad studies o kaya naman mag I start ka ng career mo ganyan

malaki narin talaga yung factor din talaga hindi dun sa stage nang nasalihan mong

organisasyon but yung sa social relationship na mabubuo mo through out yung sa

college life mo parang ayun yung ang ang term is social trapical na pede mong I ahh

I harness pede mong pakinabangan kung baga ah after four year parang reward

nalang a reward nalang sa huli yung academic destiction pero for me parang mas

mahalaga rin tlaga yung connection social trapical networking relationship na

suporta sa mga tao so ano sya parang inallow ako na ipractice yung natutunan ko

outside of the classroom so nag go beyond sa forwards sa classroom parang yung

espasyo na ibinigay saken para mas yumabong yung extra-curriculars na hindi ko

lang basta basta makukuha” [M. P1; 453-466]

The participants emphasized the importance of engaging in extracurricular

activities for students. These activities offer valuable chances to develop and enhance

a variety of skills. They go beyond regular classes and provide unique experiences

that contribute to the overall growth of students. Participating in extracurricular

activities helps students learn and improve different skills. Whether it's joining a

sports team, being part of a club, or participating in community service, students have

the opportunity to develop skills like teamwork, communication, leadership, time

management, and problem-solving. These skills are important for success in many

areas of life, like school, work, and personal relationships. Extracurricular activities

offer experiences that complement classroom learning. Students get hands-on practice

and practical knowledge that they can apply in real-life situations.

Self reflection. This theme focuses on how summa cum laude graduates

reflects on themselves that benefits them in their academic activities. Self-reflection,

also known as personal reflection, involves taking the time to deeply contemplate,

evaluate, and seriously consider one's behaviors, thoughts, attitudes, motivations, and

desires. It entails delving into one's innermost thoughts, emotions, and motivations in

order to gain a deeper understanding of oneself (Holstee, 2022) This was observed in

the following statement:

“ahh yun nga yung sinasabi ko nga sainyo na yung conception na .. nna.

concept ko nung college ano syempre kelangan nandyan yung barkada mo inom kayo

yan oo, lagi umiinom yan for a time ah dun mo rin kahit halimbawa na may pangarap

ka naman pero gusto mo sumama sa iba *giggles* Opo mayy… may time talaga na

yung kailangan mo talaga I control yung ano urge mo na parang teka bumalik ka

bumalik ka muna sa umpisa na kung bakit mo talaga pinilit mag aral at bakit mo

pinili mag pursige sa pag aaral” [M.P1: 481-490]

The participants emphasized how important it is to take time for self-reflection

and avoid distractions. In today's fast and always connected world, it's necessary to

step away from things that can divert our attention, like spending too much time on

devices, less important stuff or being too busy. When we consciously create a quiet

space without distractions, we can concentrate on our thoughts and feelings. This

uninterrupted self-reflection allows us to dig deeper into what we value, what we

believe, and what we want to achieve.

RESULT

Problem 2: What are the struggles and sacrifices that they made in order to

become a Summa Cum Laude graduate?

DISCUSSION

The findings of this research study revealed that the Summa Cum Laude

students had significant experiences in struggles and sacrifices. The researchers had

conducted one (1) theme, namely Struggles and sacrifices

Refers to the difficulties and sacrifices individuals encounter while pursuing

their academic goals. It highlights the challenges and hardships that students may face

in their educational journey, This refers to the difficulties or hardships that students

encounter during their academic journey. These struggles can vary from academic

challenges, such as grasping complex concepts, dealing with demanding coursework,

or facing difficulties in specific subjects, to personal obstacles like lack of motivation,

time management issues, or external pressures that affect their ability to focus and

excel in their studies, this was observed in the following statement.

“Hindi ako mag hindi ako magaling mag aral. Ahm ano ako e

procrastinator ako e pero siguro ayun procrastinator ako” [K. P2: 313-314]

”sa estudyante mahirap sya at yun yun minsan nga masasakripisyo mo

rinyung time na dapat aaralin mo nalang pero kailangan mo gumawa ng

article” [M. P1:388-389]

“Para saken ahm with the student council pati yung pag vovolunteer

ko ahm siguro may instances na di naman distraction per say pero may

mga instances na mag babangga sya for example yung election season

naming nong election season naming before ako ma elect syempre ano

sobrang busy non pero at the same time mga exams masasacrifice talaga

yung pag rereview ko sa exam nag susuffer den yung grades ko”

[K. P2: 417-424]

“yung saken ayun nabangit ko kaya yun yung pinaka mababa kong grade,

pero sa pandemic di naman particularly yung ano una yung kompyansa ko

sa sarili ko naka epekto talaga sya sa sa grade” [K. P2: 559-561]

“Mag butingting lang sa cellphone yun lang ganon ginagawa ko di kona

kasi ano e ang hobby ko kasi talaga mag basa ganyan kaso di ako nag

babasa pag ka nag aaral ako nag babasa lang ako kapag ka may bakasyon

kasi kapag nagbasa ako babasahin ko talaga yun uubusin ko yun tas di

nako mag aaral yun yung problema ko kaya kahit series kahit movie di ako

na nonood non e kapag hindi bakasyon tapos kapag nanood ako di nako

mag aaral hanggat di tapos, diba yun yung problema ko e” [K.P2:831-836]

“may ibang pressured ng magulang kaya may iba na feel nila yun lang

yung option for then na mas nagiging ok yung future nila so that’s

another conversation mahirap tlaga din pero ayun kung kaya sana I

pursue talaga” [K.P2:895-898]

The findings on “Struggles and scrifieces” resonates on the research of the

characteristics of the students with different performace. Dautov (2020) found that

there was a negative association observed between students' academic performance

and the extent of their academic procrastination. Additionally, a connection was

identified between "Capability deficiency" and "Lack of interest" as factors

contributing to laziness. Additionally according to UNESCO's assessment in 2021,

the field of education is confronted with a range of significant challenges. These

challenges include insufficient funding, disparities in access to education, inadequate

support and training for teachers, and the need to adapt to rapidly advancing

technology. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has added new obstacles such as

school closures, disruptions to learning, and the worsening of existing inequalities.

Addressing these challenges is crucial to ensure equitable and quality education for

all, and concerted efforts are required at various levels to overcome these barriers and

create a more inclusive and resilient education system. In conclusion, modern

education presents various challenges for students, both inside and outside the

classroom, that can hinder their learning process. These challenges include difficulties

in concentration and focus. According to Drozdenko, Tesch, and Coelho (2012),

external disturbances originating from factors like poorly explained instructions,

classroom temperature, and students' inclination towards distractions like listening to

music, significantly impact learning in the classroom. On the other hand, internal

disturbances arise from students themselves, such as lack of motivation, laziness,

engaging in play with classmates, and the desire to eat during class. For graduate

students, as highlighted by AL-Muslawi and Hamid (2020), external disturbances

extend to extracurricular academic factors, work and financial situations, family

problems, and social and emotional issues. Internal disturbances, as noted by AL-

Muslawi and Hamid (2020), encompass factors like students' competence and

aptitude, class size, schedule, learning environment, textbooks and exams, learning

facilities, and technology. Recognizing and addressing these disturbances is vital for

enhancing the learning experience. Teachers and educational institutions should strive

to create conducive environments, provide clear instructions, and offer support to

students to overcome internal and external disturbances. Additionally, interventions

that foster motivation, cultivate effective study habits, and promote a balanced work-

life-study approach can contribute to mitigating these challenges and improving the

overall learning outcomes for students.

RESULT

Problem 3: What are the study behavior and habits of Summa Cum Laude

students that benefit them from excelling in their class more specifically in achieving

summa cum laude title.

DISCUSSION

The findings of this research study revealed that the Summa Cum Laude

graduates had a significant in terms of excelling in class. The researchers had

constructed two (2) themes, namely: (1) Study Habits, (2) Academic Strategy

Study Habits. This theme focuses on Summa Cum Laude graduates having an

study habits to excel in their class. Study habits refer to the unique ways individuals

approach studying, encompassing both their methods and skills. Essentially, study

habits encompass behaviors and abilities that enhance motivation and transform

studying into a productive and rewarding process, leading to improved learning

outcomes. These skills can be described as any activities that facilitate the learning

process, such as understanding a subject, solving problems, or memorizing

information from provided materials (Jafari, 2019). The Summa Cum Laude

Graduates managed to excel in their class by having an study habits as part of their

routine. Two participants shared their experiences on having study habits to excel in

class. This was observed in the following statement:

“sa klase so talagang nakikinig ako ng mabuti ina absorb ko talaga yung

klase nag paparticipate ako talagang sponge ako na inaabsorb yung klase”

[K. P2: 341-342]

“syempre aral ka talaga kayod ka talaga ganon ahhh ano ba ayun kasi

yung parang routine ko talaga ever since di ko na nabago saken nag

ca cram talaga ako pati nag pupuyat pero yun nga e di naman sa

nag mamayabang pero magaling talaga ako mag cram dibaa malakas loob

ko kasi I can pull it off” [K. P2: 685-688]

Aside from this, the participant also shared:

“matuto karing makinig sa katawan mo kapag halimbawa na inaantok

kana talaga kailangan ko na talaga matulog wag mo na pilitin pa kasi

wala talagang, hindi mo ma aapreciate yung Aaralin mo” [M. P1:727-732]

Participants also stated that use a strategy that will suits on your capabilities:

” mahalaga den na mahanap mo yung routine mo na sa pag aaaral mo

kasi hindi pede na feel ko hindi sya sustainable na paiba iba ka ng way

sa pag aaral mo so kailangan halimbawa ngayon palang uhh mula dun

sa experience nyo sa highschool a sr highschool tignan mo na kung ilang

oras bako active mas nag wowork sakin and then I explore nyo ulit yung

other stidy techniques ganon tignan nyo kung mag wowork ba sanyo or

hindi, trial and error lang diba” [M. P1: 769-774]

“group study session kasi parang pag magkakasama kami gusto kolang

maki pag kwentuhan di rin naman makakapag aral, nag kwentuhan nalang

kami kaya ang ginagawa ko auhm gumagawa ako ng, mag susulat ako ng

sarili kong reviewing notes”[M. P1: 738-740]

“traditional method yung banking method na nakakatamad nga naman talaga

sya diba absorb absorb ka nalang kasi syempre yung study na up to

hindi talaga kayo nag eengage kayong mga students” [K. P2: 654-656]

The participants emphasized the importance of study habits, which involve various

strategies and approaches. They highlighted active engagement during class,

recognizing the need to listen to their bodies and prioritize rest. Individualized study

routines and experimenting with different techniques were also mentioned. The

limitations of group study sessions were acknowledged, and the participants shared

their method of creating personal reviewing notes. Lastly, one participant expressed

dissatisfaction with passive learning and emphasized the value of student engagement.

Academic Strategy. This theme focuses on strategies of Summa Cum Laude

graduates in terms of exceling in their class. Academic strategies play a role in

influencing satisfaction with learning, providing assurance for intellectual growth and

offering theoretical support for designing online teaching and learning platforms

(Wui, 2021). The participants who achieved Summa Cum Laude distinction

demonstrated their excellence in class through the incorporation of academic

strategies into their routines. Two participants shared their experiences of utilizing

academic strategies to excel academically, as reflected in the following statement:

“so may ganung angulo talaga na tinitignan tapos siguro since

procrastinator ako while ginagawa ko parin yunng best ko kagaya ng

sinabi nila talagang ahm parang kahit na ginawa ko yung to the last minute

mine make sure ko parin na hindi ko kailangan i revise yung quality

ng gawa ko so i. i. in effect lagi akong puyat pero talagang papanindigan

ko talaga, ginawa ko e so papanindigan ko and ayun talagang ano lang

grind” [K. P2: 328-333]

Aside from this, the participant also shared:

“ma foforce ka talaga na mag comply so feeling ko una don ay

kailangan ma intelcate ko yung Sense of responsibility sa school work

mo so ayun yung una kong prinactice” [M. P1: 241-243]

“Mahirap din kasi kapag masyado kang naka focus sa ahh sa target mong

grade so kailangan tignan morin yung angle na kung papano ka uhmm

papano ka. ma eexite sa mga lessons na ituturo sa pang second course

papano mo nasaan yung interest mo within dun sa sa sa mismong course

na ituturo sanyo” [M. P1: 247-252]

The participants shared strategies for academic excellence, including overcoming

procrastination and delivering high-quality work, being meticulous in assignments

regardless of weight, and employing strategic thinking based on grading criteria. They

also emphasized cultivating a sense of responsibility for schoolwork and finding

personal interest in subjects beyond target grades. These approaches demonstrate

determination, attention to detail, strategic thinking, and a balanced mindset towards

academic success.
