EXPERIENCING ARCHITECTURE

SCALE AND PROPORTION / CHAPTER VI

INTRODUCTION TO

STEEN EILER RASMUSSEN

Steen Eiler Rasmussen, the author of

experiencing architecture book, is a
danish architect born in 1898, he wrote
the book when he was 64 years old and
the book was published in 1957, in this
respect, the book gives us over 60 years
of experience.

MUSIC & ARCHITECTURE
"Working with basic mathematical proportions cheers up the
soul, and as a result, the tones produced by strings with
simple proportions delight our ears."
It's not explained exactly how it affects people when it sets a
tone, but it is clear that she has an intuition that enables her to
perceive proportions in the physical world.

PALLADIO VILLA & LE CORBUSIER' HOUSE

Le Corbusier’s house in Garches , built for de Monizm in 1930.

Palladio’s villa, Foscari ,lies in Malcontenta on the mianland, near
Venice, and was built for a Venetian about 1560.
Palladio villa and Le Corbusier’s house have
remarkable similarity in tehir propotioning, but
there is no similarity in the priciples of
composition in the two buildings.
Palladio worked with simple mathemetical
ratios corresponding to the harmonic ratios of
music.Le Corbusier worked with rooms of widely
different shapes in an asymmetrical whole and
the location of his important divisions was based
on the golden section.
This is ‘’Le Modular’’ and proportion study by Le
Coubusier.

The man is 183 cm tall and with raised arm 226 cm.

His height divided according to the golden section

and the height of the novel from the ground is 113 cm.
At the same time this measure is half of the upraised
arm height of the figure.

These measurements were found by dividing by the

golden section, and the results were the same as for
the vitruvian man.

‘’This male figure represent the essence of harmony’’

Le Corbusier says that the two
series he developed ( man's height
and upraised arm height ) are
intuitively produced and universal.
His series meet the demands of
beauty from the golden ratio, but
also include functionality.

standard units to not have problems
with unappropriations.

The (new) "Rigshospitalet" replaced The Royal Frederik's Hospital and was
inaugurated in 1910, with modern hospital facilities located around the
Østerbro Quarters and Fælledparken. The location was outside of the city
centre in green and space full surroundings. Photo of Rigshospitalet in 1915

from 1970 houses "Rigshospitalet" -
as well as Copenhagen University
Hospital - and has since 1995 been
an integrated part of the
Copenhagen Hospital Corporation.
The premises are situated beside
the old hospital buildings from
1910.

Kaare Klint realized that some furniture
and household items were often the same
size and tried to apply this to a
mathematical ratio in his designs.
RHYTHM IN ARCHITECTURE
⦁ Rhythm is one of the architectural tools we can
use to create certain atmospheres in
architecture. It can be defined as the change of
items or actions over time.

⦁ Rhythm can be simple, complex, or a

combination of both, such as sequential
complexity or complex order.
COMPLEX ORDER

In the world of architecture, you can also
experience delightful examples of subtle
variations within strict regularity
