Launching JMAG-Designer from Windows Start Menu

1. Click the Start icon in Windows and click JMAG-Designer in the list of applications.
JMAG-Designer starts and the startup window is displayed.
Operations such as opening a recently used file or linking with commercial CAD software can be
directly performed from the startup window.
MEMO If [Close] is clicked after selecting [Do not show this dialog in the future] in the startup win-
dow, the startup window will no longer be displayed during JMAG-Designer startup. In order to dis-
play the startup window again when launching JMAG-Designer, it is necessary to change its
environment settings.

Startup Window

Launching JMAG-Designer from the Command Line

 Windows (using command)

1. Execute the command to run JMAG-Designer.

If the JMAG-Designer installation folder is set to INSDIR, execute the following command:
(INSDIR=C:\Program Files\JMAG-Designer22.2, etc.).
cd $INSDIR
designer.exe

File paths with spaces need to be enclosed with double quotation marks (").
Enter the file path after the execution command when running JMAG-Designer specifying a
JCF file or script file. The following is an execution example:

11
JMAG Version 22.2 User's Manual
Screen Configuration

cd "C:\Program Files\JMAG-Designer22.2"
designer.exe "D:\JMAG\2Dmotor.jcf"

 Linux (using command)

1. Execute the command to run JMAG-Designer.

If the JMAG-Designer installation folder is set to INSDIR, execute the following command:
(INSDIR=/home/JMAG-Designer22.2, etc.)
cd $INSDIR
./designer

The path to the library and a symbolic link must be set every time the terminal is run (See the
JMAG Linux Module Installation Manual). Therefore, run the following commands during the
first startup from the terminal. Executing the setenv script file specifies path to the library.
cd $INSDIR
source setenv
./designer

The setenv file is a file with the setting commands for environmental variables written in a bash
shell. To set the path to the library in csh or other shells, the file where the export command is
replaced with the setenv command needs to be separately prepared.

Configuration Items
The model consists of the following items.
However, since the integration model is a model without a shape, items related to shape are not dis-
played.

Item Description
[Unit] The unit system is defined for each model. The unit system selected in the
[Units] tab of the [Preferences] dialog is applied to the model at one of the
following times:
• When a new model is added to [Project Manager]
• When a unit system is acquired for the model
[Equations] Equation variables can be created and used when specifying JMAG-
Designer and Geometry Editor values. Using variables allows parameter
values to be changed in accordance with expressions you created, and
allows relationships between parameters to be defined also via expressions.
MEMO Variables can be added to studies, models, and analysis groups.
Additionally, by registering variables as equation groups in the [Equations]
tab in the [Toolbox], those variables can be used across several different
projects.
[Assembly] Displays each part included in the assembly of the model data. The flags to
the left of assemblies and parts can be used to toggle between hiding and
displaying. Depending on the type of part, different icon images are dis-
played in the [Project Manager] tree.
• : Displayed when the type of part is a beam.
• : Displayed when the type of part is a shell.
• : Displayed for parts other than a shell or beam.
• : Displayed when parts are grouped. There is no difference in the type
of parts that are grouped (solid, beam, or shell).
[Cut plane] Defines a cross section to check the distribution of physical quantities
inside the model. Planar and cylindrical cross sections can be defined.
• : Displayed when cut planes are set.
• : Displayed when cut cylinders are set.
[Set] under [Template A “set” is a function that groups multiple parts, faces, edges, or vertices.

Item Description
[Reference Target] under In JMAG, there are many parameters that define the direction and coordi-
[Template Parameter] nate for such as magnetization direction of permanent magnet, axis direc-
tion and a point on the axis of Rotation Periodic Boundary condition. To
define the direction and coordinate, there is a method to refer to the face/
edge/vertex.
By setting the face/edge/vertex as reference target in advance, it become
easier to define the direction/coordinate using same face/edge/vertex at
multiple functions/conditions.
In addition, the information of reference target can be inherited to other
models using the analysis template function.
The type of icons displayed in the [Project Manager] varies depending on
the type of reference target.

• : Displayed when a face is registered as a reference target.

• : Displayed when an edge is registered as a reference target.

• : Displayed when a vertex is registered as a reference target.

[Coordinate System] The coordinate system is used when specifying the direction in condition
settings. The coordinate system can be set for each model. Types of coordi-
nate systems include the rectangular and cylindrical coordinate systems.
• : Displayed when the type of coordinate system is a rectangular coor-
dinate system.
• : Displayed when the type of coordinate system is a cylindrical coordi-
nate system.
• : Displayed when the type of coordinate system is a user-defined rect-
angular coordinate system.
• : Displayed when the type of coordinate system is a user-defined
cylindrical coordinate system.
[Study] To perform an analysis, it is necessary to set operating environments and
drive conditions for the analysis target, as well as material properties of each
section. In JMAG-Designer, these types of settings are managed in units
referred to as a “study”.
For details, see “Study” on page 30.

Geometry Editor

Components of the Geometry

The components of geometry that can be used in Geometry Editor are as follows:

Component 2D/3D Description

Assembly 2D/3D An assembly corresponds to a model in JMAG-Designer.
An assembly is composed of one or more parts or 2D sketches. An
assembly has information about the location of the parts.
Part 3D A part is composed of one or more solids, shells, or beams.
Solid 3D When a sketch with a feature set has a 3D shape, it is called a
“solid”. “Solid” is not displayed in the [Model Manager] tree.
Shell 3D When a sketch with a feature set has a 3D shape without thickness,
it is called a “shell”. “Shell” is not displayed in the [Model Manager]
tree.
Beam 2D/3D When a sketch with a feature set has a 1D shape, it is called a
“beam”. “Beam” is not displayed in the [Model Manager] tree.
Sketch 3D In the sketch, draw a cross-sectional view of the part.
2D sketch 2D • When creating a 3D model, the sketch should be created under
the part.
• When creating a 2D model, the sketch should be created under
the assembly.
Feature 2D/3D Shape characteristics that are added to regions, solids, and assem-
blies.
There are various types of features, such as the Extrude feature for
creating solids, the Extrude Surface feature for creating shells, the
Make Beam feature for creating beams, the Chamfer/Fillet feature,
and the Pattern Copy feature.
When you create a mesh, you add a mesh feature to a region. A
mesh created by adding a mesh feature to a solid or region is called a
“feature mesh”.
Coordinate system 2D/3D A 2D coordinate system for drawing. Users can define these them-
selves.
Basic shapes 2D/3D Basic shapes are the items that make up a sketch.
There are several types of basic shapes: lines, circles, arcs, ellipses,
elliptical arcs, splines, and vertices.
Region 2D/3D A region is created for a cross-sectional drawing of a part.
By creating a region on the cross-sectional drawing of a part (the
outline of the part), it becomes an object (face).
In the case of a 2D model, one region is one part.
Constraint 2D/3D Constraints are used to set limits on the length, size, and position of
basic shapes and parts.
For constraints, there is a “2D constraint,” which defines the posi-
tions of basic shapes between identical or different sketches, and a
“3D constraint,” which defines the position of parts.
Coil template 3D The coil template feature allows you to model coils by simply speci-
fying numerical parameters.

Screen Configuration

Component 2D/3D Description

Wire template 2D The wire template feature allows you to model wires by simply spec-
ifying the range through which the wires will pass and numerical
parameters.
Mesh part 2D/3D A mesh part is used when creating a mesh model. A mesh part is
made up of one or more mesh blocks.
The state in which the feature mesh is separated from the solid or
region is called the “mesh part”.
You can make direct changes to the elements and nodes of the mesh
part.
Models created in JMAG-Studio are also imported as mesh parts.
Mesh block 2D/3D A mesh block is used when creating mesh models for 3D analysis or
2D analysis.
A mesh block is made up of one or more elements or beam ele-
ments.
Geometry set 2D/3D A geometry set is information of groups of regions, solids, edges,
and vertices, or definition information of directions and coordi-
nates.
This information can be used for setting conditions in JMAG-
Designer.

[Model Manager]
[Model Manager] can be used to verify the structure of the assembly currently displayed in the
Geometry Editor and perform operations for an assembly and its components (sketches, parts).
In the [Treeview] tab, components of an assembly are displayed by their hierarchical structure. The
[Control] tab is used when setting the parameters for each component of the assembly.

[Treeview] Tab
Components of an assembly are managed in the [Treeview] tab.

Left: 2D analysis model, right: 3D analysis model

In the [Treeview] tree inside the [Model Manager] (hereafter referred to as the [Model Manager]
tree), assembly, parts, solids, sketches, basic shapes, features, constraints, and regions are displayed in
the hierarchy.
From the tree, operations such as selecting each item displayed in the tree, and setting properties or
suppression can be performed.

 Notes
• The Geometry Editor is a history-based geometry modeling tool which has task-history informa-
tion for each model. The task-history is displayed in order on the [Treeview] tab and earlier oper-
ations will be displayed in top-to-bottom order (e.g. the image below shows the operations were
run in the order of coil, magnet, and rotor).

The task-history also affects the display of the graphics window. For example “coil” is displayed
in the graphics window while “rotor” is not, when “magnet” is edited as in the image above.
This is because “coil” is created before “magnet,” and “rotor” is created after “magnet.

 Selecting the components in the [Model Manager] tree

Parts and sketches can be selected not only from the graphics window, but also from the [Model
Manager] tree.
For example, for a model with multiple parts combined in a complex manner, it is sometimes diffi-
cult to select specific parts in the graphics window. In times like these, select a part in the [Model
Manager] tree.
Parts for [Assembly Boolean] and [Imprints for Parts] can also be selected in the [Model Manager]
tree by clicking the [Treeview] tab when the [Control] tab is displayed. As shown in the image
below, the [Treeview] tab is displayed the upper section, and the [Control] tab is displayed in the
lower section. When a part is clicked in the upper part of the tree, that part is added to the [Part] list
in the lower section.

[Control] Tab
The settings for basic shapes and features are displayed in the [Control] tab of [Model Manager].
The [Control] tab automatically switches to the editor when basic shapes and features are created or
edited.

1. Execute the command for starting JMAG-Designer with the option for starting JMAG-
Express.
If the JMAG-Designer installation folder is set to INSDIR, execute the following command:
(INSDIR=C:\Program Files\JMAG-Designer22.2, etc.).
cd $INSDIR
designer.exe --fast-response-mode

File paths with spaces need to be enclosed with double quotation marks (").
Enter the file path after the execution command when running JMAG-Express specifying a
JPROJ file. The following is an execution example:
cd "C:\Program Files\JMAG-Designer22.2"
designer.exe --fast-response-mode "D:\JMAG\2Dmotor.jproj"
