Fault Level Calculation

This document calculates the fault levels at different voltage levels of a 1.0MTPA cement plant in Tamil Nadu, India. It determines the fault contribution from the grid, transmission line, transformers, and generators. The total fault level is found to be highest at the 110kV bus at the TNEB switchyard at 1149.49MVA, followed by the 110kV bus at the plant side at 1041.67MVA, then 111.11MVA at the 6.6kV bus and 33kV bus. Cable impedances are ignored to provide a conservative fault level estimate.

A. Source Impedance
Source Fault level at TNEB
Incoming Bus is taken as 1108 MVA (5.82kA )
Therefore Source Impedance = 1 / 1108
= 0.0009 PU
B. Transmission Line Impedance
Transmission line is 2.7km (Moose Conductor - 54 + 7 / 3.53mm)

Resistance of Moose 110kV Line = 0.0547 ohms/km

= 0.14769 ohms
Reactance of Moose 110kV Line = 0.373 ohms/km
= 1.0071 ohms
Base Impedance = ( 110 x 110 )
= 12100 ohms
Transmission line Resistance = 0.1477 / 12100
= 0.000012 PU
Transmission line Reactance = 1.0071 / 12100
= 0.000083 PU
2 2
Transmission line impedance = 0.000033 + 0.000083 )
= 0.0001 PU
C. Typical 25MVA Transformer Impedance
Transformer Rating = 25 MVA
Transformer impedance = 10 %
= 0.1 / 25
= 0.004 PU
D. Typical 12.5MVA Transformer Impedance
Transformer Rating = 12.5 MVA
Transformer impedance = 10 %
= 0.1 / 12.5
= 0.008 PU
E.Fault level at 6.6kV Bus
Fault contribution from grid through line = 1 / ( 0.0009 + 0.0001 + 0.004 + 0.004 )
and 2x25MVA Transformer = 1 / 0.009
= 111.11 MVA ( 9.7 kA )

E.Typical Fault level at 33kV Bus

Fault contribution from grid through line = 1 / ( 0.0009 + 0.0001 + 0.008 )

and 12.5MVA Transformer = 1 / 0.009
= 111.11 MVA ( 1.9 kA )

F.Fault level at 110kV Bus at Plant Side

Fault contribution from grid through line = 1 / ( 0.0001 + 0.0009 )

= 1000 MVA

Fault contribution from Transformer = 1 / ( 0.004 + 0.004 + 0.008 + 0.008)

= 41.67 MVA
Therefore total fault level at 110KV Bus = 1041.67 MVA ( 5.47 kA )
G.Fault level at 110kV Bus at TNEB SwitchYard.

Fault contribution from grid = 1108 MVA

Fault contribution from Transformers = 1 / ( 0.004 + 0.004+ 0.008 + 0.008 + 0.0001 )
and Line = 41.49 MVA

Therefore total fault level at 110KV Bus = 1108 + 41.49

= 1149.49 MVA ( 6.03 kA )
NOTE:

The Impedance of Cable from Transformer to Panel Incomer, and from Generator
to Panel Incomer has not been taken into consideration. This is a safe
assumption, as it will give a conservative estimate of Fault level.
