familiar, and is used occasionally for emphasis.
bold Emphasizes important information. Also indicates
button, menu, and icon names on which you can act.
For example, click Next.
UPPERCASE Indicates the name of a file. For operating
environments that use case-sensitive file names, the
correct capitalization is used in information specific
to those environments.
Also indicates keys or key combinations that you can
use. For example, press the ENTER key.
monospace Indicates syntax examples, values that you specify, or
results that you receive.
monospaced Indicates names that are placeholders for values that
italics you specify. For example, filename.
Convention Explanation

Before you install Connect ODBC, you need to verify that you
have both the correct database client software on your system, a
supported version of the database, and a supported version of
the operating system.
Driver Requirements
The following section describes the client requirements for
Connect ODBC drivers.
Windows
To access supported remote Informix databases through the
Informix driver, you need one of the following:
INFORMIXDIR=/databases/informix;export INFORMIXDIR
Windows
IMPORTANT: You must have all components of the Oracle client
software installed; otherwise, the driver will not operate
properly.
To access remote Oracle9i servers, you must use either the Oracle
Net8 Client 8.1.6 or higher or the Oracle Net Client for 9i.
On Intel systems, the appropriate DLLs for the Oracle Net8 Client
or the Oracle Net Client for 9i must be on your path, for
example, ORA805.DLL, PLS805.DLL, and OCI.DLL.
UNIX
IMPORTANT: You must have all components of the Oracle client
software installed; otherwise, the driver will not operate
properly. See the DataDirect README for a component list.
NOTE: On Linux, you must use the Oracle Net8 Client version
8.1.6.1.
To access remote Oracle9i servers, you must use either the Oracle
Net8 Client 8.1.6 or higher or the Oracle Net Client for 9i.
Before you can use the Oracle driver, you must have a supported
Oracle client installed on your workstation in the
$ORACLE_HOME source tree. ORACLE_HOME is an environment
variable created by the Oracle installation process that identifies
the location of your Oracle client components.
ORACLE_HOME=/databases/oracle;export ORACLE_HOME
This site linking binds your unique Oracle Net8 configuration into
the file, which is used by the Oracle driver to access local and
remote Oracle databases.
Before you build the Oracle Net8 shared library, install Oracle and
set the environment variable ORACLE_HOME to the directory
where you installed Oracle.
For Oracle Net8 Client 8.0.5 and 8.0.6 on Solaris and Oracle Net8
Client 8.0.5, 8.0.6, and 8.1.5 on HP-UX 11, the following
commands build the Oracle Net8 shared library:
cd ${ODBC_HOME}/src/oracle
genclntsh8
cd ${ODBC_HOME}/src/oracle
genclntsh816
Before using the driver, you must set the DLC environment
variable to your PROGRESS DLC directory. For example:
set DLC=C:\PROGRESS
Windows
For support of version 7.0 and 2000 of SQL Server, the driver
requires the SQL Server 7.0 versions of Net-Library DLL files,
which are installed when you install Connect ODBC for SQL
Server Wire Protocol. The driver communicates with network
software through the SQL Server Net-Library interface.
UNIX
To use the SQL Server Wire Protocol driver on UNIX, you must
have TCP/IP configured on both the UNIX client and the Windows
NT or Windows 2000 server on which the SQL Server database
resides. The UNIX SQL Server TCP/IP network client library is built
into the UNIX SQL Server ODBC driver. Nothing else is required
beyond the normal ODBC environment.
The SQL Server Client configuration has been merged with the
ODBC driver configuration and is set in the system information
file.
Supported Databases
The following table shows the databases supported by each
Connect ODBC driver at the time of the release. For the most
current information, refer to the Connect ODBC matrix on
DataDirect Technologies web site:

System Requirements
The following are system requirements for using Connect ODBC
drivers on Windows.
C:\Program Files\DataDirect\ODBC41
Installing from a CD
This section provides instructions for installing Connect ODBC
drivers and Connect ADO providers from a CD to your local drive.
Use the main installer window to install ODBC drivers and other
DataDirect products available on your CD. Upon completion of
the installation, the main installer window allows you to install
another product or exit.
NOTE: You can exit the Setup program at any time by clicking
Cancel, or return to the previous window by clicking Back.
■ Desktop:
Online Books: If you want to install the Online Books, click the
drop-down arrow in the icon and select "This feature will be
installed on local hard drive." The red X disappears from the
icon.
■ License Information
■ ODBC Administrator
■ ODBC Driver Help
■ ODBC Pack Readme
■ Online Books (if you installed the Online Books)
■ XML Persistence Demo
C:\TEMP
3 From Windows Explorer, navigate to this directory; then,
double-click the Setup program.
■ Copying files from the CD. Copy the entire contents from the
appropriate platform directory to a network directory. For
example, to install the Connect ODBC Pack, copy the
contents of:
\ODBC\WIN9XNT
Navigate to the network directory and double-click the Setup
program. The product Welcome window appears. To
complete installation, follow Step 3 through Step 9 under
“Installing from a CD” on page 33.
Silent Installations
The Connect ODBC Setup provides a command-line option for
silent installations on Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows
XP. The silent installation is useful for system administrators who
want to create a batch file to execute multiple identical
installations of Connect ODBC. To perform a silent installation,
use the following procedure.
Command-Line Syntax
In general, there must be a space between all command-line
parameters and between each argument:
and
CUSTOMER=\"John Doe\"
Parameter Description
/s Instructs Setup to perform a silent installation.
/v"arguments Passes arguments to the installer; the v cannot be followed by a space.
parameters" The arguments and following parameters must be enclosed between
quotation marks.
/qn Additional parameter required to perform a silent installation.
/l*v path\name Instructs the installer to create a log file of the installation. The v must be
followed by a space, then by the path where you want the log file
created, as well as the name of the log file. The directory you specify
must exist. If you specify a directory that does not exist, the installation
fails.
Argument Description
COMPANY=company name Provide your company name.
CUSTOMER=user name Provide your name.
INSTALLDIR=installation directory Provide the directory name where you want to install
the drivers. The suggested default is C:\Program
Files\DataDirect\ODBC41.
Because this path contains spaces, you must use
escape characters as explained under
“Command-Line Syntax” on page 41.
IMPORTANT: Connect ODBC 4.1 cannot be installed in
the same installation location as an earlier version of
Connect ODBC or Connect Premium.
LICENSE=key value Provide the license key for your purchased product or
enter EVAL to install an evaluation copy.
OPTION=PACK You must include this argument only if you are
installing either the Desktop or OEM Pack.
OPTION=SINGLE You must include this argument only if you are
installing either a DESKTOPSINGLE or SERVERSINGLE.
Argument Description
PRODUCTSELECTED= Choose the option that you want to install, such as,
{DESKTOPSINGLE | DESKTOPPACK | PRODUCTSELECTED=DESKTOPPACK.
SERVERSINGLE | OEMPACK} If you specify DESKTOPPACK, you must also specify
either DRIVER=ALL or driver=TRUE, where driver is
the name of a Connect ODBC driver (as described in
Table 2-3). You can specify
driver=TRUE for each driver you want to install; see
“Example 3” on page 47.
If you specify OEMPACK, you must also specify
DRIVER=ALL.
If you specify either DESKTOPSINGLE or
SERVERSINGLE, you must also specify
driver=TRUE, where driver is the name of a Connect
ODBC driver (see Table 2-3). In this case, you can
specify this argument only once; see “Example 2” on
page 46.
SERIALNUMBER=serial number value Provide the serial number for your purchased
product or enter EVAL to install an evaluation copy.
Argument Description
BTRIEVE=TRUE Installs the Btrieve driver.
DB=TRUE Installs the DB2 Wire Protocol driver.
DBASE=TRUE Installs the dBASE driver.
DEFAULTDATA=TRUE Creates default data sources.
DRIVER=ALL Installs all the Connect ODBC drivers. You do not have to
list each driver individually if you use this argument. This
argument is required if you set the PRODUCTSELECTED
argument to either DESKTOPPACK or OEMPACK (see
Table 2-2).
EXCEL=TRUE Installs the Excel driver.
EXISTINGDRIVER=TRUE Overwrites existing Connect ODBC drivers.
FOXPRO=TRUE Installs the FoxPro driver.
INFORMIX=TRUE Installs the Informix and the Informix Wire Protocol
drivers.
ONLINEBOOKS=TRUE Installs the Online Books.
ORACLE=TRUE Installs the Oracle and Oracle Wire Protocol drivers.
PARADOX=TRUE Installs the Paradox driver.
PROGRESS=TRUE Installs the PROGRESS 9 driver.
SQLBASE=TRUE Installs the SQLBase driver.
SQLSERVER=TRUE Installs the SQL Server and SQL Server Wire Protocol
drivers.
SYBASEASE=TRUE Installs the Sybase Wire Protocol driver.
TEXT=TRUE Installs the Text driver.
XML=TRUE Installs the XML driver.
