Connect ODBC Installation Guide

17

1 Before You Install

Before you install Connect ODBC, you need to verify that you
have both the correct database client software on your system, a
supported version of the database, and a supported version of
the operating system.

Driver Requirements
The following section describes the client requirements for
Connect ODBC drivers.

Connect ODBC for Btrieve

To access a Btrieve database, you must be using the appropriate
client software for the version of the Btrieve database to which
you are connecting:

Database Versions Client Names

Pervasive.SQL 2000 Pervasive.SQL 2000 client software
Pervasive.SQL 7.0 Pervasive.SQL 7.0 client software
Btrieve 6.15 for Btrieve Developer’s Kit or
Windows 9x Btrieve WorkStation Client Engine
Btrieve 6.15 for Btrieve Developer’s Kit,
Windows NT Btrieve WorkStation Client Engine, or
Btrieve Client/Server Database Engine

Before you attempt to access Btrieve files, you must incorporate

existing Btrieve files into a Scalable SQL database. See the

Connect ODBC Installation Guide

18 Chapter 1 Before You Install

Connect ODBC Reference for information on defining table

structure.

NOTE: The Btrieve driver may experience problems if the Btrieve

Microkernel Engine’s communication buffer size is smaller than
the Btrieve driver’s Array Size attribute. You can increase the
communication buffer size with the Pervasive Software Setup
Utility. You can decrease the array size option when you
configure a data source using the ODBC Btrieve Driver Setup
dialog box, or when passing a connection string.

Connect ODBC for DB2 Wire Protocol

The server requirement for all platforms is the same. The DB2
database must be installed as the Server Version (not the Local
Version).

There are no client requirements for the DB2 Wire Protocol

driver.

Connect ODBC for dBASE

There are no client requirements for the dBASE driver.

Connect ODBC for Excel Workbook

The Excel Workbook driver requires the OLE32.DLL. This DLL is
typically provided by the Windows System. It is also provided with
Excel 5.1 and 7.0.

Connect ODBC Installation Guide

Driver Requirements 19

Connect ODBC for Informix

This section provides the system requirements for using the
Informix driver on all supported platforms.

Windows
To access supported remote Informix databases through the
Informix driver, you need one of the following:

■ Informix Connect for Windows platforms, version 2.x

■ Informix Client Software Development Kit for Windows

platforms, version 2.x

Use the Setnet32 utility supplied by Informix to define servers

and the location of the INFORMIX directory. Use Ilogin to test
your connection to the Informix server. The path to the
ISQLT09A.DLL must be in your PATH environment variable.

UNIX (AIX, HP-UX, and Solaris)

The environment variable INFORMIXDIR must be set to the
directory where you have installed the Informix client.

For example, the following syntax is valid for C-shell users:

setenv INFORMIXDIR /databases/informix

For Bourne- or Korn-shell users, the following syntax is valid:

INFORMIXDIR=/databases/informix;export INFORMIXDIR

In addition, the INFORMIXSERVER variable must be set to the

name of the Informix server (as defined in your
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts file). For further details, refer to the
Informix documentation.

Connect ODBC Installation Guide

20 Chapter 1 Before You Install

To access supported remote Informix databases through the

Informix driver, you need one of the following:

■ On HP-UX and Solaris: Informix Connect version 2.x

■ On AIX: Informix Connect version 2.2 or higher

■ On HP-UX and Solaris: Informix Client Software Development

Kit version 2.x

■ On AIX: Informix Client Software Development Kit version 2.2

or higher

Connect ODBC for Informix Wire

Protocol
There are no database client requirements for the Informix Wire
Protocol driver.

Connect ODBC for Oracle

This section provides the system requirements for using the
Oracle driver on both Windows and UNIX.

Windows
IMPORTANT: You must have all components of the Oracle client
software installed; otherwise, the driver will not operate
properly.

The Oracle Net8 Client 8.0.5 or higher is required to access:

■ Remote Oracle8 servers 8.0.5 or higher

■ Remote Oracle servers 7.3.4.x

Connect ODBC Installation Guide

Driver Requirements 21

To access remote Oracle9i servers, you must use either the Oracle
Net8 Client 8.1.6 or higher or the Oracle Net Client for 9i.

On Intel systems, the appropriate DLLs for the Oracle Net8 Client
or the Oracle Net Client for 9i must be on your path, for
example, ORA805.DLL, PLS805.DLL, and OCI.DLL.

UNIX
IMPORTANT: You must have all components of the Oracle client
software installed; otherwise, the driver will not operate
properly. See the DataDirect README for a component list.

The Oracle Net8 Client 8.0.5 or higher is required to access:

■ Remote Oracle8 servers 8.0.5 or higher

■ Remote Oracle servers 7.3.4.x

NOTE: On Linux, you must use the Oracle Net8 Client version
8.1.6.1.

To access remote Oracle9i servers, you must use either the Oracle
Net8 Client 8.1.6 or higher or the Oracle Net Client for 9i.

Before you can use the Oracle driver, you must have a supported
Oracle client installed on your workstation in the
$ORACLE_HOME source tree. ORACLE_HOME is an environment
variable created by the Oracle installation process that identifies
the location of your Oracle client components.

Set the environment variable ORACLE_HOME to the directory

where you installed the Oracle client. For example, for C-shell
users, the following syntax is valid:

setenv ORACLE_HOME /databases/oracle

For Bourne- or Korn-shell users, the following syntax is valid:

ORACLE_HOME=/databases/oracle;export ORACLE_HOME

22 Chapter 1 Before You Install

Building the Required Oracle Net8 Shared Library on

Solaris and HP-UX 11
A one-time site linking to build a replacement Oracle Net8 shared
library is required in the following cases:

■ For Oracle Net8 Client 8.0.5 and 8.0.6 on Solaris and

HP-UX 11

■ For Oracle Net8 Client 8.1.5 and 8.1.6 on HP-UX 11

This site linking binds your unique Oracle Net8 configuration into
the file, which is used by the Oracle driver to access local and
remote Oracle databases.

The Oracle driver requires the shared library libclntsh.so (Solaris)

and libclntsh.sl (HP-UX 11), which is built by the Oracle script
genclntsh. The genclntsh script provided by Oracle causes errors
resulting from undefined symbols. Users running Oracle8 on
specific platforms with certain versions of Oracle client software
(as documented below) must therefore use the genclntsh8 or
genclntsh816 script provided with Connect ODBC for Oracle to
build a replacement libclntsh.so or libclntsh.sl. These scripts, in
the src/oracle directory, place the new libclntsh.so or libclntsh.sl in
../../lib, which is your $ODBC_HOME/lib directory; it does not
overwrite the original libclntsh.so or libclntsh.sl in the
$ORACLE_HOME/lib directory.

Before you build the Oracle Net8 shared library, install Oracle and
set the environment variable ORACLE_HOME to the directory
where you installed Oracle.

For Oracle Net8 Client 8.0.5 and 8.0.6 on Solaris and Oracle Net8
Client 8.0.5, 8.0.6, and 8.1.5 on HP-UX 11, the following
commands build the Oracle Net8 shared library:

cd ${ODBC_HOME}/src/oracle
genclntsh8

Connect ODBC Installation Guide

Driver Requirements 23

For Oracle Net8 Client 8.1.6 on HP-UX 11, the following

commands build the Oracle Net8 shared library:

cd ${ODBC_HOME}/src/oracle
genclntsh816

WARNING: Oracle8 users will have the original libclntsh.so

library in the $ORACLE_HOME/lib directory. Therefore, the
$ODBC_HOME/lib directory, containing the correct library, must
be on the LD_LIBRARY_PATH (Solaris) or SHLIB_PATH (HP-UX 11)
before $ORACLE_HOME/lib. Otherwise, the original Oracle
library will be loaded, resulting in the unresolved symbol error.

Connecting to Oracle 8.1.7 on HP-UX

To connect to Oracle 8.1.7 on HP-UX, you must have the HP
patch PHSS_22514 incorporated into the operating system, and
you must set the LD_PRELOAD system variable to the absolute
path of the libjava.sl library.

Connect ODBC for Oracle Wire Protocol

There are no client requirements for the Oracle Wire Protocol
driver.

Connect ODBC for Paradox

To use the Paradox driver, you must install the Borland Database
Engine, which conforms to the IDAPI programming interface.
The Borland Database Engine can be found in any of the
following software packages:

■ Borland C++ for Windows

■ Delphi for Windows
■ Paradox 7, 8, or 9 for Windows

Connect ODBC Installation Guide

24 Chapter 1 Before You Install

You must have IDAPI32.DLL on your path or in your Windows 98

or Windows Me \SYSTEM directory, or Windows NT,
Windows 2000, or Windows XP \SYSTEM32 directory.

Connect ODBC for PROGRESS 9

To access a PROGRESS database with the PROGRESS 9 driver, your
system must have the following software installed:

■ On the client computer: PROGRESS SQL Client Access

version 9.1B or higher.

■ On the server computer: PROGRESS Enterprise Database

version 9.1B or higher.

NOTE: The PROGRESS 9 driver cannot access PROGRESS databases

created prior to version 9.1B.

Before using the driver, you must set the DLC environment
variable to your PROGRESS DLC directory. For example:

set DLC=C:\PROGRESS

Connect ODBC for SQLBase

To communicate with the SQLBase server, the SQLBase driver
requires the SQLBase 7.5 client software, which includes the
following shared libraries: SQLWNTM.DLL and SQLNGCI.DLL. The
directory containing these files must be on your path.

Connect ODBC for SQL Server

To use the SQL Server driver, you must have the appropriate
Microsoft SQL Server DB-Library and Net-Library version installed
(version 6.5 for access to 6.5 database systems; version 7.0 for
access to 7.0 and 2000 database systems).

Connect ODBC Installation Guide

Driver Requirements 25

The SQL Server driver requires Microsoft client software; it does

not work with Sybase System 10 or 11 software.

Your database must support catalog stored procedures.

The DB-Library is NTWDBLIB.DLL. The Net-Library you need

depends on the network protocol used to connect to SQL Server.
For example, Named Pipes requires DBNMPNTW.DLL, and TCP/IP
requires DBMSSOCN.DLL. Contact your Microsoft SQL Server
vendor to obtain the appropriate DB-Library and Net-Library.

You must have NTWDBLIB.DLL on your path or in your

Windows 98 or Windows Me \SYSTEM directory, or Windows NT,
Windows 2000, or Windows XP \SYSTEM32 directory.

Connect ODBC for SQL Server Wire

Protocol
This section provides the driver requirements for using the SQL
Server Wire Protocol driver on both Windows and UNIX
platforms.

Windows
For support of version 7.0 and 2000 of SQL Server, the driver
requires the SQL Server 7.0 versions of Net-Library DLL files,
which are installed when you install Connect ODBC for SQL
Server Wire Protocol. The driver communicates with network
software through the SQL Server Net-Library interface.

There are no client requirements for the SQL Server Wire

Protocol driver.

Connect ODBC Installation Guide

26 Chapter 1 Before You Install

UNIX
To use the SQL Server Wire Protocol driver on UNIX, you must
have TCP/IP configured on both the UNIX client and the Windows
NT or Windows 2000 server on which the SQL Server database
resides. The UNIX SQL Server TCP/IP network client library is built
into the UNIX SQL Server ODBC driver. Nothing else is required
beyond the normal ODBC environment.

The SQL Server Client configuration has been merged with the
ODBC driver configuration and is set in the system information
file.

2 Installation on Windows

DataDirect Connect ODBC includes a Setup program that enables

you to install the product from a CD, an electronic site, or a
network directory.

If you purchased Connect ODBC Pack, you do not have to install

all the drivers; you can select specific drivers to install.

Before You Install

Before you start installation:

■ Exit or close all applications that are running to prevent

file-locking conflicts.

■ Verify that your system meets the driver’s requirements for a

database before you install the driver. The driver will not
work if these requirements are not met. Refer to Chapter 1
“Before You Install” on page 17 for a list of driver
requirements.

■ You must be a system administrator or have update privileges

for the registry key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE]. These
privileges are required to update the registry with the new
drivers being installed. See your system administrator if you
are unsure.

■ If the files are on a network, verify that you have write

privileges. See your network administrator if you are unsure.

IMPORTANT: You must have version 2.6 or higher of Microsoft

Data Access Components (MDAC) installed to configure and use
the Connect ODBC drivers. You can download a utility that

Connect ODBC Installation Guide

32 Chapter 2 Installation on Windows

determines the version of your currently installed MDAC from the

following Microsoft site:

http://www.microsoft.com/data/download.htm#26SDKinfo

If you do not have a supported version of MDAC, you can

download it from this site or install it from the DataDirect CD. To
install from the DataDirect CD, navigate from the root directory
to \mdac and run MDAC_TYP.EXE.

System Requirements
The following are system requirements for using Connect ODBC
drivers on Windows.

■ The ODBC drivers are 32-bit drivers. All required network

software supplied by your database system vendors must be
32-bit compliant.

■ Memory requirements vary, depending on the database

driver. If you are using a flat-file database driver, you need at
least 8 MB of memory on Windows 98 and Windows Me, and
at least 16 MB of memory on Windows NT, Windows 2000,
and Windows XP. If your system is hosting a relational
database system, additional memory may be required.
Consult your relational database documentation to
determine the exact memory requirements.

■ Service Pack 5 or higher for Windows NT

■ Service Pack 1 or higher for Windows 2000

■ 25 MB of available hard disk space for 32-bit drivers.

Silent Installations
The Connect ODBC Setup provides a command-line option for
silent installations on Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows
XP. The silent installation is useful for system administrators who
want to create a batch file to execute multiple identical
installations of Connect ODBC. To perform a silent installation,
use the following procedure.

1 From a command-line prompt, change to the directory

containing the Connect ODBC file SETUP.EXE, or insure that
this directory is on your path.

2 The command-line syntax for executing a silent installation is:

setup.exe /s /v"arguments /qn /l*v path\log"

See “Command-Line Syntax,” for an explanation of the syntax
rules. See Table 2-1 for an explanation of each command-line
parameter. See Table 2-2 and Table 2-3 for an explanation of
the arguments that follow the /v parameter. The tables are
followed by specific examples of the command-line syntax.

Connect ODBC Installation Guide

Silent Installations 41

3 The installation proceeds without any further user

intervention or notification unless you enter an incorrect IPE
key or invalid driver choices; in which case, an error is
displayed. For example, if you specify
PRODUCTSELECTED=DESKTOPSINGLE and choose two drivers
to install, DB=TRUE and ORACLE=TRUE, you receive the
following error message:

You have chosen more than one driver.

Setup will abort and you must correct the silent installation
command line.

Consult the log that is created during the installation (see

“The Log File” on page 47) to determine whether the
installation was successful and, if it failed, why it failed. You
must have this log available if you contact DataDirect for
technical support.

Command-Line Syntax
In general, there must be a space between all command-line
parameters and between each argument:

setup.exe /s /v"arguments /qn /l*v path\log"

The exception is that there cannot be a space between /v and

the double quotation mark that follows it. There can be multiple
arguments and parameters specified between the opening and
closing double quotation marks, but each one must be separated
by a space. The arguments are case-sensitive.

Connect ODBC Installation Guide

42 Chapter 2 Installation on Windows

IMPORTANT: When any of the command-line parameters include

a value that contains a space, that value must be preceded and
followed by the escape characters \". For example:

INSTALLDIR=\"C:\Program Files\My Drivers\"

and

CUSTOMER=\"John Doe\"

Parameters and Arguments

See Table 2-1 for an explanation of each command-line
parameter. See Table 2-2 and Table 2-3 for an explanation of the
required and optional arguments that follow the /v parameter.

Table 2-1. Silent Installation Parameters

Parameter Description
/s Instructs Setup to perform a silent installation.
/v"arguments Passes arguments to the installer; the v cannot be followed by a space.
parameters" The arguments and following parameters must be enclosed between
quotation marks.
/qn Additional parameter required to perform a silent installation.
/l*v path\name Instructs the installer to create a log file of the installation. The v must be
followed by a space, then by the path where you want the log file
created, as well as the name of the log file. The directory you specify
must exist. If you specify a directory that does not exist, the installation
fails.

Silent Installation Examples

The following examples illustrate some typical command-line
installations.

Example 1

This example installs a licensed copy of the Connect ODBC Pack

desktop version; creates default data sources; overwrites existing
drivers; installs the Online Books; creates an installation directory
named \Program Files\DataDirect\ODBC41, and creates a log file
named log.txt in the temp directory:

Setup.exe /s /v"PRODUCTSELECTED=DESKTOPPACK OPTION=PACK DRIVER=ALL

DEFAULTDATA=TRUE EXISTINGDRIVER=TRUE ONLINEBOOKS=TRUE INSTALLDIR=
\"C:\Program Files\DataDirect\ODBC41" CUSTOMER=\"John Doe\" COMPANY=
DataDirect SERIALNUMBER=12345 LICENSE=1234678 /qn /l*v D:\temp\log.txt"

Example 2

This example installs an evaluation copy of the Connect ODBC

Oracle drivers; creates default data sources; installs the Online
Books; creates an installation directory named \ODBC\Oracle, and
creates a log file named log.txt in the temp directory:

Setup.exe /s /v"PRODUCTSELECTED=DESKTOPSINGLE OPTION=SINGLE ORACLE=TRUE

DEFAULTDATA=TRUE ONLINEBOOKS=TRUE INSTALLDIR=C:\ODBC\Oracle CUSTOMER=\"John
Doe\" COMPANY=DataDirect SERIALNUMBER=EVAL LICENSE=EVAL /qn /l*v
D:\temp\log.txt"

Connect ODBC Installation Guide

Configuring Drivers and Data Sources 47

Example 3

This example installs licensed copies of the DB2 Wire Protocol,

Oracle, and Oracle Wire Protocol drivers, and creates an
installation directory named \Program Files\Connect ODBC, and
creates a log file named odbclog.txt in the "odbc log" directory:

Setup.exe /s /v"PRODUCTSELECTED=DESKTOPPACK OPTION=PACK DB=TRUE ORACLE=TRUE

INSTALLDIR=\"C:\Program Files\Connect ODBC\" CUSTOMER=James COMPANY=\"Laser
Products\" SERIALNUMBER=12345 LICENSE=1234678 /qn /l*v \"C:\odbc
log\odbclog.txt\""

The Log File

The log file created during the installation can be read with a
text editor or word processor. Although the file can be very long,
the most important information is at the beginning and end.
The final lines of the log file indicate whether the installation
was successful. The initial lines reproduce all of the
command-line arguments that you entered. If there was a
failure, check the command-line entries closely to see if the
syntax is correct. DataDirect Technologies provides technical
support to help you interpret the log file if you encounter
problems.

Configuring Drivers and Data Sources

Before you can use a driver, you must configure a data source for
it. A data source consists of a data source name, driver location,
and optional driver information in the system information. Use
the ODBC Administrator to select an installed driver and then
configure a data source for it. Configuration instructions are
provided in the online help for each driver’s configuration
window and in the Connect ODBC Reference.

4 Installing and Viewing Online

Books

The DataDirect CD and the DataDirect Technologies Web site

provide online books for the DataDirect Product Series. In
addition, they provide Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is required
to view the online books.

This chapter explains how to:

■ Install the online books without using a product installer

■ View the online books
■ Customize the online books
■ Install Acrobat Reader from the CD

NOTE: Instructions for downloading the online books and

Acrobat Reader from the Web are provided on the DataDirect
Web site.

About DataDirect’s Online Books

You can view the online books from the CD or install them to a
local or network location. You must view the online books using
Acrobat Reader 3.x, or later, licensed from Adobe Systems. The
DataDirect CD includes Acrobat Reader 4.x with Search.

You can print the online books to create high-quality, hard-copy

books. While viewing an online book in the Acrobat Reader,
select File / Print to print the entire file (book), the current page,
or a range of pages.

Connect ODBC Installation Guide

68 Chapter 4 Installing and Viewing Online Books

Installing the Online Books

If you want to install the online books without using a product
installer, you must maintain the same directory structure that is
on the CD. You can install all the online books or specific ones:

■ To install all product books, copy the entire \books directory

to your local or network drive.

■ To install a specific set of books, copy that book’s directory

structure (beneath the \books directory) to your local or
network drive. For example, to install the Connect
ODBC books, you would copy the entire odbc directory
beneath the books directory (\books\odbc).

Viewing the Online Books

To help you navigate through a DataDirect product’s online
books, an Acrobat file, called books.pdf, is provided. This file lists
each online book provided for a product. We recommend that
you open this file first and, from this file, open the book you
want to view.

If you want to keep the books.pdf file open until you choose to
close it, go to the Reader menu bar and select File / Preferences /
General. Clear the check box for the Open Cross-Document Links
in Same Window option.

NOTE: If you do not already have Acrobat Reader installed, you

must install it before you can view the books. See "Installing
Acrobat Reader" on page 74 for details.

Connect ODBC Installation Guide

Viewing the Online Books 69

To view the online books:

1 Start Acrobat Reader in one of the following ways:

■ For Windows, click Start on the Taskbar and select

Programs. Select the Adobe Acrobat folder that was
created during the installation of the Acrobat Reader,
and click the Acrobat Reader icon.

■ For UNIX, you can start the Reader from the command
line by using its launch script:

• If the launch script directory is in the search path set by

the PATH environment variable, type the following to
start Acrobat Reader:
% acroread
• If the launch script directory is not set in the PATH
environment variable, type:
% /acrobatreaderinstalldir/bin/acroread
2 On the Reader menu bar, select File / Open, and choose the
path where the books.pdf file resides. For example, for
SequeLink:

D:\Program Files\DataDirect\slodbc51\books\slnk\books.pdf

or for Connect ODBC:

D:\Program Files\DataDirect\books\odbc\books.pdf

3 Click Open.

While viewing the online books, you can use hypertext links,
perform text searches, and use bookmarks.

Connect ODBC Installation Guide

70 Chapter 4 Installing and Viewing Online Books

Using Hypertext Links

Cross-reference links within online books allow you to jump to
related topics and other books within a product’s documentation
set. These links are displayed in blue and allow you to jump to a
cross reference with a single click of the mouse. Some links take
you to a URL on DataDirect’s World Wide Web site (if you have an
HTML browser installed on your computer). The page numbers in
the table of contents and index are also hypertext links.

Performing Text Searches

With Acrobat Reader with Search, you can perform full-text,
boolean searches across all of a product’s online books. You type
a query and Acrobat Reader displays the matching text.

NOTE: If you will be performing searches across online books on

the CD over a non-UNIX network, you must explicitly map to the
network drive that contains the CD to enable the Search tool.

The search indexes for DataDirect online books were created

with the word stemming search option. This option finds words
that share a stem with a search word. For example, if you search
for “programming,” the Reader will also find “program” and
“programs.” The search indexes were not created using the
Sounds Like and Case Sensitive options. Therefore, you cannot
use these options when searching online books. Finally, numbers
are not included in the search index and will not be found by a
search.

Using Bookmarks
All of the online books contain predefined bookmarks that make
it easy for you to quickly jump to a specific topic. By default, the
bookmarks are displayed to the left of each online book. For

Connect ODBC Installation Guide

Customizing the Online Books 71

more information about using Acrobat Reader, refer to the

online help for the product.

Customizing the Online Books

If you have Adobe Acrobat Exchange 3.0 or higher, you can
customize the online books to reflect information specific to
your work environment. For example:

■ Notes. You can embed notes within an online book to help

identify important procedures or helpful hints specific to
your organization. A note appears in the online books as a
note icon; double-click the icon to view the embedded note
text.

■ Bookmarks. You can also add customized bookmarks to an

online book to help you find topics even faster. Bookmarks
can be used to jump to topics within a book, or to other PDF
files.

For specific instructions on how to customize a book, refer to the

Acrobat documentation.

About Acrobat Reader

You must view the online books using Acrobat Reader 3.x, or
later, licensed from Adobe Systems. This CD includes the English
version of Acrobat Reader 4.x with Search for the following
platforms: Windows 9x, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Solaris,
