5 - 681103 - Control Loop & Safety Loop Overview - REV

This document provides an overview of control loops and safety loops used in process control. It discusses the functions of a control system including process monitoring, parameter regulation, and safety automation. Control loops are used to maintain constant process parameters and react to disturbances, while safety logics take action during abnormal conditions to protect personnel, equipment, and the environment. The key elements of a basic control loop are described including the various signal types used. Symbols are also introduced to represent functions and instrumentation in control loops.

ON/OFF loop
 Discontinuous mode of operation:
• A lower limit and upper limit must be set in order to use this type of
regulation Range of Value
• When the measurement reaches the lower limit
− the actuator goes to a particular position (On or Off for a pump, Open
or Closed for a valve)
• Likewise, when the measurement reaches the upper limit:
− the actuator is placed in the opposing position

 Types of actuators
Example of implementation: • Double-acting with bi-stable automatic valve
• Sequential automatisms such
as instrument air dryers

ON/OFF Safety loop
 The safety loop comprises of:
• Primary element (sensors and transmitters)
• Logic solver (software and hardware)
• Power supplies (electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic)
• Final elements (usually valves)
