Matatag Interior and Exterior Angles

The document discusses interior and exterior angles of polygons, including definitions and formulas. Interior angles are the angles formed by consecutive sides, while exterior angles are formed when a side is extended. The sum of interior angles is (n-2)180 and the sum of exterior angles is always 3600. Several examples are provided to demonstrate calculating unknown angles using the given sums.

Interior Angles of a polygon are the angles formed by the

consecutive sides of a polygon.

Given the figure on the side, ∠ 1, ∠ 2, ∠ 3, ∠ 4 and ∠ 5
are interior angles of the polygon.

Name of Figure Number of Number of Sum of Interior

Polygons Sides Dissected Angles
(CONVEX) Triangles (n-2)180
Triangle 3 1 (1x180)=180

Quadrilateral 4 2 (2x180)=360

Pentagon 5 3 (3x180)=540

Hexagon 6 4 (4x180)=720

Heptagon 7 5 (5x180)=900

Octagon 8 6 (6x180)=1080

Illustrative Examples:
1. Four interior angles of a pentagon measures 105⁰, 102⁰, 75⁰ and 95⁰,
respectively. Find the measure of the measures of the remaining angle.
Solution: A pentagon has five sides (n = 5):
To find the sum of interior angles of a pentagon, we will used:
𝑆 = (𝑛 − 2)180
𝑆 = (5 − 2)180
𝑆 = 540⁰
To find the remaining measures of the interior angle of a pentagon, we will
use:
𝑚∠1 + 𝑚∠2 + 𝑚∠3 + 𝑚∠4 + 𝑚∠5 = 540⁰
105⁰ + 102⁰ + 75⁰ + 90⁰ + 𝑚∠ 5 = 540⁰
372⁰ + 𝑚∠ 5 = 540⁰
1
372⁰ − (372⁰) + 𝑚∠ 5 = 540⁰ − (372⁰)
𝑚∠ 5 = 168⁰
The remaining angle of the interior angle of the pentagon is 168⁰
2. A vegetable garden in VNHS formed a hexagonal shape. The interior
angles are 90°, 90°, 100°, 160° and 120° respectively. Find the
measures of the other interior angles.
Solution: A pentagon has five sides (n=6) :
To find the sum of interior angles of a hexagon, we will used:
𝑆 = (𝑛 − 2)180
𝑆 = (6 − 2)180
𝑆 = 720⁰
To find the remaining measures of the interior angle of a hexagon, we will
use:
𝑚∠1 + 𝑚∠2 + 𝑚∠3 + 𝑚∠4 + 𝑚∠5 + 𝑚∠6 = 720⁰
90⁰ + 90⁰ + 100⁰ + 160⁰ + 120⁰ + 𝑚∠ 6 = 720⁰
560⁰ + 𝑚∠6 = 720⁰
560⁰ − (560⁰) + 𝑚∠6 = 720⁰ − (560⁰)
𝑚∠6 = 160⁰
The remaining angle of the interior angle of the hexagon is 160⁰
3. Find the measure of each interior angles on the given figure:
Solution:
𝑚∠𝐴 + 𝑚∠𝐵 + 𝑚∠𝐶 + 𝑚∠𝐷 + 𝑚∠𝐸
= 540⁰
𝑥 + 75⁰ + 𝑥 + 2𝑥 + 140⁰ + 33⁰ = 540⁰
4𝑥 + 248⁰ = 540⁰
4𝑥 = 292⁰
𝑥 = 73⁰
𝒎∠𝑨 = 𝒙 + 𝟕𝟓⁰ = 𝟕𝟑⁰ + 𝟕𝟓⁰ = 𝟏𝟒𝟖⁰
𝒎∠𝑩 = 𝟕𝟑⁰
𝒎∠𝑪 = 𝟐𝒙 = 𝟐(𝟕𝟑⁰) = 𝟏𝟒𝟔⁰

Exterior Angles of a polygon are the angles formed

when the side of the polygon is extended.
Given the figure on the side, ∠6, ∠7, ∠8, ∠9 and ∠10
are exterior angles of the polygon.

Note: The sum of exterior angles of any polygon is always equal to

360⁰

Illustrative Examples
1. Three exterior angles of a quadrilateral measures 86⁰, 100⁰, and 58⁰.
Find the measures of the remaining exterior angle of the quadrilateral.
Solution: A quadrilateral has four sides (n=4):
To find the sum of exterior angles of a quadrilateral is 360⁰:
To find the remaining measures of the exterior angle of a quadrilateral, we
will use:
𝑚∠1 + 𝑚∠2 + 𝑚∠3 + 𝑚∠4 = 360⁰
86⁰ + 100⁰ + 58⁰ + 𝑚∠4 = 360⁰
254⁰ + 𝑚∠4 = 360⁰
254⁰ − (254⁰) + 𝑚∠4 = 360⁰ − (254⁰)
𝑚∠4 = 106⁰
The remaining angle of the exterior angle of the quadrilateral is 106⁰

The relationship of interior and exterior angles of a polygon are linear.

Linear pairs are supplementary and adjacent. The sum of the angles is equal
to 180⁰.
∠1 and ∠10, ∠2 and ∠6, ∠3 and ∠7, ∠4 and ∠8, and ∠5 and ∠9 are linear
pairs.

Illustrative Examples
Using the figure, find the remaining angles of the given figure.
Solution:
To solve for m∠1, To solve for m∠2,
92⁰ + m∠1= 180⁰ 123⁰ + m∠2= 180⁰
m∠1= 180⁰ - 92⁰ m∠2= 180⁰ - 123⁰
m∠1= 88⁰ m∠2= 57⁰

To solve for m∠4, To solve for m∠3,

92⁰ + 123⁰ + m∠4= 360⁰ 145⁰ + m∠3= 180⁰
m∠4= 360⁰ - 215⁰ m∠3= 180⁰ - 145⁰
m∠4= 145⁰ m∠3= 35⁰
MEASURES OF INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR ANGLES
OF A REGULAR POLYGON

Illustrative Examples:
1. Find the number of sides of a regular polygon if each exterior angle
is 30°and determine the name of a polygon.
Solution: If the polygon has n sides, Then, we know that; n = 360°/measure
of each exterior angle
Here, exterior angle = 30°
𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑠 = 360°/𝑚𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑒𝑎𝑐ℎ 𝑒𝑥𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑜𝑟 𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒
𝑛 = 360°/30°
𝑛 = 12
Therefore, there are 12 sides of the regular polygon. It is a dodecagon.
