Academic writing refers to a particular style of
expression used in formal essays and other
assessments

Academic writing is not just one skill… it is a
collection of skills or features:

“It requires formal language, a logical structure


and it must be supported by evidence”.

• Formal language:
– Clear, concise, formal and objective language.
– Traditional conventions of punctuation,
grammar, and spelling are used.
– It has a particular purpose, which is to aid the
reader’s understanding on one issue.

• Logical structure:
– Ideas are organised in a formal, coherent and
logical order or structure.
– Planned and focused → it answers the
question and demonstrates an understanding
of the subject.

– Ideas must be supported by references from
academic literature (= mentioning other

– Responsibility is expected when it comes to

• When it comes to minor details: font, line
spacing… → There are not fixed rules for the
layout of academic work.

• Different formats → different schools,


departments...

• Guidelines will always be given.


3. The purpose of academic
writing
It is necessary to specify a purpose if you want
your academic writing to be successful.
– It provides writers with the question to which he
or she has to answer on the pages of their
academic essay/report.
– It helps writers decide what vocabulary,
grammar and organization to use in a piece of
writing.

• Specify your purpose → reasons for writing:
– To report a piece of research the writer has
conducted
– To provide solutions to one issue
– To discuss a subject of common interest and the
writer’s view
– To synthesise research done by others on a topic
– To persuade your reader by stating an opinion and
giving reasons and examples to support this opinion
– ….

• Occasional letters to friends, relatives…

• Work: application letters, work reports,


project proposals, recommendations, project
assessments, sets of instructions…

• Own pleasure: short stories, poems, novels,


an autobiography…

• Writers’ duty: be clear in their writing
• Have you faced with a text you can’t
understand?
• Some academic texts are just difficult to read.
Some even intentionally.
→ Strategies to understand difficult
academic texts: be familiar with academic
vocabulary and style → READ A LOT!!
