Introduction

• Engineering drawing is a two dimensional representation of three

dimensional objects.
• In general, it provides necessary information about the shape, size,
surface quality, material, manufacturing process, etc., of the object.
• It is the graphic language from which a trained person can visualize
objects.
• Hence, Engineering Drawing is the language of Engineers and by
means of Engineering Drawing one can express the shape, size of any
object accurately and clearly.
• To develop in students graphic skill for communication of concept,
idea and design of engineering products and expose them to the
standards of technical drawings.

Methods of Drawing

• There are 3 methods of writing the graphic languages:

• Freehand

• With Hand-held instruments

• By Computer

Methods of Shape Description

• Two Dimensional Drawings or Plane Geometrical drawings.

- Drawing which represents the objects having two dimensions.
- Examples: Square, Triangle, Parabola, Hy-parabola, Ellipse etc on a
drawing sheets.

• Three Dimensional Drawings or Solid Geometrical drawings.

- Drawing which represents the objects of three dimensions.
- Examples: Cone, Sphere etc on a drawing sheets.

General Principles regarding Dimensioning

• All dimensions should be detailed on a drawing.

• Mark the dimensions outside the drawing as far as possible.

• Avoid dimensioning to hidden lines wherever possible.

• The longer dimensions should be placed outside all intermediate

dimensions, so that dimension lines will not cross extension lines.
