1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

The pursuit of quality education has always been at the forefront of

educational institutions and policymakers. In the dynamic landscape of education,

the methods employed in teaching play a pivotal role in shaping students' academic

performance. This study dives into the intriguing realm of STEM (Science,

Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, where the mastery of

complex concepts and the development of critical problem-solving skills are

relevant. STEM education is widely acknowledged as a key driver for innovation,

economic growth, and technological advancements. In addition, an increasing

number of students are enrolling in STEM programs across the globe. However, the

effectiveness of teaching methods in STEM disciplines and their impact on students'

academic performance remain subjects of intense study and debate.

Engagement with students that enables their knowledge, application, and comprehension

can be defined as teaching. The positive connection between the educator and the

students is crucial to achieving an impactful academic outcome in their performances.

Moreover, A way to achieve a positive result from teaching the students is by applying

teaching methods, as it enables the students' capabilities to learn inside the classroom. It

is best defined as the general principle of conveying information to learners by using

different learning techniques that are suitable for different learning objectives. To
guarantee that the students have an equal opportunity and learning, a variety of actions

and methods are used. Furthermore, when the instructor is deciding on what method to

use, the learner's flexibility must be considered when applying the educational process, as

it is the key for students to develop their learning capabilities and experiences (Dayagbil

et al., 2021). Using effective teaching methods can have an impact on the learners’

academic achievement, for it to take place a good method must be used by the instructor.

Despite the wealth of literature on teaching methods in STEM, there remains a lack

of research that directly examines how STEM students themselves perceive these

methods and how these perceptions are linked to their academic performance.

Academic Performance serves as the representation of the student’s knowledge and

abilities as it measures their achievements in various subjects. The effective use of

teaching methods can have a great impact on further developing a student’s skills in

their Academic Achievement. According to (Hawthorne, 2023), Students'

Achievement can be significantly impacted by effective instruction. Proper

application of teaching methods is vital and it is best to apply proper knowledge and

understanding to be able to deliver proper learning that is suitable for the students. In

addition to that, Each Student has a different way of understanding and obtaining

knowledge, the instructors must take into consideration the different techniques and

methods they may use to further improve the students' learning capabilities and

academic performance. This study aims to bridge this gap by searching into the
subjective experiences and perspectives of STEM students regarding the teaching

methods employed in their courses.

The foundation of this study is rooted in the works of various scholars who have explored

the complicated relationship between teaching methods and student performance within

the STEM disciplines. Smith and Johnson (2017) have emphasized the need to adapt the

ways of teachings to meet the evolving needs of STEM students, this is because without

the students stepping out of their comfort zone, their potential to grow is limited. On the

other hand, Brown et al. (2019) have investigated the influence of active learning

strategies on student engagement and achievement in STEM courses. Furthermore, the

comprehensive review by Martinez and Garcia (2020) sheds light on the various array

of teaching methodologies used in STEM education and their respective implications on

student learning outcomes.

Ultimately, the researchers will culminate this exploration by formulating a concise

statement of the problem, pinpointing the core issue at hand – the need to understand how

STEM students perceive the various teaching methods available to them and how these

perceptions be in tune with their academic performance. The narrative will then point

towards a detailed examination of teaching methods within STEM disciplines, including

traditional lectures, interactive sessions, hands-on experiments, online learning platforms,

and various hybrid approaches. During this exploration, the researchers will generously

draw upon established research findings, citing statements of fact that provide insights
into the strengths and weaknesses of different teaching methodologies. These references

will serve as pillars supporting our arguments and add stronghold to the study.

2 METHODS OF STUDY AND SOURCES OF DATA

This chapter discusses the methods and procedures that will utilize by the

researchers in the preparation and completion of the study. It includes the research

design, research instrument, research locale, research respondents/participants, and data

gathering procedures.

Research Design

The researchers will employ a Qualitative Case Study that is suited for
accomplishing the study’s purpose and objectives.

According to (Tenny, 2022), in his study titled, A sort of research called

qualitative research focuses on actual issues and offers more in-depth understandings.
(Further elaborate why this design suits the study) Qualitative research assists in the
creation of hypotheses as well as the further investigation and understanding of
quantitative data, as opposed to gathering numerical data points or intervening or
introducing treatments as in quantitative research. Moreover, in qualitative research,
participants' experiences, viewpoints, and actions are gathered. Instead of addressing how
many or how much, it addresses the questions “How” and “Why”.

Through the identification of numerous components that interact with one

another, a complex phenomenon can be investigated using the qualitative case study
research approach (Debout, 2016). The situation being viewed is actual. It could involve
a clinical decision-making process in the area of nursing science. Thus, the study makes it
possible to conceptualize the experience of a patient or physician.
