Objectives
Hi! in this lesson, we are guided by the following specific
objectives:
1. Cite the importance of community dynamic.
2. Share significant community-based activities describing the
community life.
3. Identify the importance of studying the community action.
4. Express ideas about the importance of studying community
action.
COMMUNITY
The word community was derived from the Latin
word communis, which means “common” or “shared”.
Communities are generally defined by their common cultural
heritage, language, beliefs, and shared interests.
They may be classified as small such as the small place based
community of a barangay or coastal village, or large such as
a region, state, or nation.
DEFINITIONS OF COMMUNITY
(Abenir and Alipao 2016)
1. It is a group of people living in the same place or having a
characteristic in common such as norms ,religion values or
identity.
2. It is a group of people who share the same things such as :
where they live ,work and play
3. It is also a place where people solve problems together in a form
of collaboration and teamwork.
DEFINITIONS OF COMMUNITY

4. It could be characterized by age group,race, gender, religion,shared
beliefs, traditions, rules, market structure and location
5. It is a durable relation that extend beyond immediate geneological
ties also define a sense of community.
6. It defines as social ties in their identity, practice and roles in
social institutions.(such as family,home,work,government,society or
humanity at large.
7. It refers on the feeling of fellowship with others , because of
sharing common attitudes, interests and goals
Geographical Community
It is a community where members share the same
geographical vicinity such as a village, province or
neighborhood.
(e.g. young people, seniors, culture, or ethnicity).
Non-Geographical Community
It is a community formed based on needs, ideas,
interests, identity, practices, and roles in social
institutions
Micro-level community, a group is formed based
on personal ties. This may include groups
formed for pursuing common interests or goals
like forming a small organization to hold a fund-
raising activity such as concerts.
Macro-level, large group affiliation is formed such
as national communities, international communities,
and virtual communities.
Companies and corporations may develop various
programs that would include different members
across the country.
Social Capital
Social capital is a positive product of human
interaction and the network of relationships within
particular society, to function effectively.
You are said to have high social capital if you have a lot of
relationships and connections. When we interact with others in society,
goodwill and trust are generated. Individuals ( or entire communities)
can, in turn, call upon this goodwill and trust in their time of need in
acts of reciprocity.
Why do we need to study the concept of COMMUNITY?
1. It aims to enhance your sense of shared identity and willingness to
contribute to the pursuit of the common good of the community.
(ex. Tree planting, sea shore cleaning etc.)
2. It enables you to integrate applied social sciences in solving social
problems and issues into community-action inititiatives.
3. It gives you a holistic perspective in which socialization , collaboration
and camaraderie are vital in improving the quality of life in the
community
The following are the importance of studying community:
1. It motivates people to work together – people feel a sense
of community and recognize the benefits of their involvement.
2. It encourages social, religious, or traditional obligations for
mutual help
3. People see a genuine opportunity to better their own lives and
for the community
4. It understands policies promoting community participation
that values social capital.
5. Community participation could be understood as the direct
involvement of citizenry in the affairs of planning, governance, and
overall development programs at local or grassroot levels
Community Dynamics
The changes in the community brought about by
social, cultural and environmental experiences
whether it is positive or negative development that
impacts within the community.
Community dynamics are the changes in community
structure and composition over time, often following
environmental disturbances such as volcanoes,
earthquakes, storms, fires, and climate change.
FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNITY DYNAMICS
1. SOCIOLOGIST - concerned about the norms, functions and
planning of social policy of a specific community.
(ex. Social Policies like Tapat ko Linis Ko)
2. POLITICAL SCIENTIST- involved in the formulation of policy and
governance in the community.
3. ECONOMIST - involved in the designing the market structures,
human capital trade
4. ANTHROPOLOGIST- examines biological,aechaelogical, linguistic
or sociocultural traditions in the community.
5. DEMOGRAPHERS- concerned on analyzing the population including
birth and death rates in the community
Community Action
is any activity that aims to increase the
understanding, engagement and empowerment of
communities for the intention of giving services to
people or the community
ex. livelihood programs, tree planting, clean and
green
