Paragraph Structure

A paragraph usually contains a topic sentence, 3 supporting ideas, and a concluding sentence. The topic sentence introduces the main idea. The 3 supporting ideas provide evidence to back up the main idea. The concluding sentence reinforces the topic sentence. An example paragraph is provided that follows this structure, first introducing why people love spending time outdoors in the topic sentence, then providing three supporting ideas about fresh air, outdoor sports, and spending time with others, and concluding by summarizing the fun and enjoyment found outdoors.

Writing a paragraph

A paragraph usually has three parts:


A topic sentence to introduce your main idea
At least 3 supporting ideas to support your main ideas
A concluding sentence to reinforce your topic sentence

There are three reasons why people love spending time outdoors. (2)First, many people crave the fresh
outdoor air. When they are inside the air is temperature is usually controlled by air-conditioning and this air does
not always seem fresh compared to outdoors where people can feel the breeze in their hair. (3)Second, many
people enjoy playing sports outdoors. For example, some say that playing tennis on an outdoor court is so much
nicer than playing on an indoor court. Furthermore, some sports require a big field such as cricket and football.

Finally, many families and friends can meet and spend time together outdoors. Some people will have a
barbecue while others might go somewhere for a picnic. (5)To sum up, the outdoor environment provides people
with many opportunities for fun and enjoyment including fresh air, sports and getting together with family and
friends.
