CO 4th Quarter Organize Data in Tabular Form

This document provides a detailed lesson plan for organizing data in a tabular form for a Grade 5 Mathematics class. The lesson plan consists of 5 parts: 1) an introductory activity to motivate students, 2) a group activity where students practice organizing data into a table, 3) an analysis of the group activity, 4) abstraction of the key steps to organize data into a table, and 5) an application activity where students create a table based on survey results. The overall goal is for students to understand how to organize data into a table by creating rows and columns, writing labels, tallying information, and writing an appropriate title.

4.1 Introductory Activity Motivation

Introduce a song to the class in the tune of the song “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”. The song will tell
about the lesson for today. Tell the class to have a warm up to become mentally and physically alert. (The
teacher will post the lyrics of the song on the board and let the pupils read the lyrics first.)

Data, Data
Data, Data, What are you?
We collect you, oh It’s true.
ORGANIZE you that’s my plan.
ANALYZE to understand

Data, Data what are you?

5 minutes Now’s the time to work with you.
Unlocking of Terms
The teacher will define the following terms.
 Data – the information that we collect.
(In English; data is in plural form and its singular form is datum.)
 Organize – means arrange. When you arrange things, you easily know where to find them.
 Analyze – make a careful study to understand more.
 Table - is used in presenting information or data using rows (horizontal) and columns
(vertical).
 Tally – count or add up.
 Frequency – the number of times a value occurs.
4.2 Group Activity The teacher will present a scenario for the learners to read.

10 minutes Miss Gonzales recorded the Math Quiz results of her Grade 5 students.
The scores are listed below.

5 4 3 5 1 4 3 5 5 2 4 3 4
4 4 5 5 4 4 5 4 4 3 5 4 5
3 5 3 4 4 5 1 4 2 5 4 5 4

Based on the above data, how many students got 5? How many students got below 3? If the passing
score is 4, how many passed the quiz? What was the lowest score obtained by a student?

How may Ms. Gonzales analyze her quiz results and answer the questions?
We have to properly organize the data for us to answer the given questions. Organizing data in a
tabular form is one way of presenting data.
Complete the table below to answer the following question.

Let the group discuss their answer and present their output on the board. REMEMBER
Group 1.
Question: How many columns and rows are there in the table?

Group 2.
Question: What are the words or labels found at the heading of the columns?

Group 3:
Question: What is the title of the table?

Let the group discuss and post their answers on the board.

4.3 Analysis Answer the following questions about the activity:

1. How many students got 5? (13)
2. How many students got below three? (4)
3. If the passing score is 4, how many passed the quiz? (16)
4. What was the lowest score obtained by a student? (1)
5. What do you call the spaces created by t he vertical and horizontal lines in the table?
10 minutes (columns and rows)
6. What do you call the words you find at the column heading? (labels)
7. What did you do to complete the table? (tally)
8. What do you call the name of the organized data in the table as found in the activity? (title)

4.4 Abstraction To organize data in a table we have to:

1. Create a table with columns and rows.
2. Write the labels.
minutes 3. Tally the data or information.
4. Write the appropriate title.
Read the following and create a table with the given data.

4.5 Application The Subject Club Adviser conducted a survey about the top favorite subject of students. These
5 minutes are the results of the survey: Mathematics – 13, English – 14, Science – 11, Filipino – 9, Aral. Pan. – 6,
MAPEH – 5 and EPP – 8.

We follow the same steps.

1. Create a table. Determine the number of columns and rows.
2. Write the labels.
3. Make a tally. And complete the table.
4. Write an appropriate title.

Answer: The Top Favorite Subject of Students
