Module 2 - Statics of Rigid Bodies

This module discusses components of a force and covers determining the vertical (y-component) and horizontal (x-component) of a force. It defines resolving a force into components graphically and analytically using trigonometry. An example problem demonstrates resolving a 100N force inclined at 30 degrees into its 50N y-component and 86.6N x-component either considering the triangles graphically or placing the components directly on the axes. Exercises are provided to practice determining components of additional forces.

MODULE 2

Module 2: Components of a Force

UNIT II: COPLANAR, CONCURRENT FORCE SYSTEMS

This unit is consisting of three modules, MODULE 2 (Components of a Force)

MODULE 3 (Resultant of Two or More Forces) and MODULE 4 (Equilibrium of Coplanar,
Concurrent Force System).

MODULE 2

Components of a Force

This module covers the concepts and principles to determine the vertical and
horizontal components (x and y components) of a force which are vital in the computation
of different problems in the succeeding modules.

a Fx

F Fy

θ
o b x

Fig. 1

Fig. 1 shows the x and y axes with the original force F inclined at angle θ with the
x – axis and resolved into its x and y components (Fx and Fy) respectively which can be
both computed graphically and analytically.

Graphically, value of Fx and Fy can be determined using a ruler and the value of
θ can be determined using a protractor.

Analytically, value of Fx, Fy and θ can be computed using the principle learned in
Trigonometry.

To determine the value of Fy, let’s consider the triangle boc from Fig. 1.

MODULE 2

a Fx c

F Fy

θ
o b x

Solve for Fy:

Sin θ = Fy / F therefore, Fy = F Sinθ

To determine the value of Fx, let’s consider triangle aoc from Fig 1.

Solve for Fx:

Sin (90-θ) = Fx /F therefore, Fx = F Sin (90-θ)

Note: Fx can also be placed along the x-axis while Fy can also be placed along the y-
axis.

Example 2.1 : Solve for Fx and Fy:

a Fx c

F=100N Fy

θ=300
o b x

Solution:

Consider Triangle boc: Consider Triangle aoc:

Sin 300 = Fy / 100N Sin (900-300) = Fx / 100N

Fy = 100N (Sin300) Fx = 100N (Sin 600)

Fy = 50Nans. Fx = 86.60Nans.

MODULE 2

Second Solution: Place Fy on the y-axis and Fx on the x-axis:

a c

Fy F=100N

θ=300
o Fx b x

Consider Triangle boc: Consider Triangle aoc:

Cos 300 = Fx /100N Cos 600 = Fy / 100N

Fx = 100N (Cos 300) Fy = 100N (Cos 600)

Fx = 86.60Nans. Fy = 50Nans.
