The document summarizes the five classes of vertebrates: 1. Fish have skeletons made of bone or cartilage and move through water using muscular contractions. The main classes of fish are jawless fish, cartilaginous fish, and bony fish. 2. Amphibians live both on land and in water, returning to water to reproduce. Examples are frogs, toads, and salamanders. 3. Reptiles like alligators, lizards, snakes, and turtles have lungs and skin that does not need to stay moist. They lay hard-shelled eggs. 4. Vertebrates- animals with an internal skeleton or endoskeleton made up of bones.

Classifications and Characteristics of Vertebrates

1. Fish- Fishes have a wide variety of shapes, colors, and sizes. They move by flexing their bodies and
contracting their muscles. They use these contractions to push water backward and move their body forward.

Classes of Fish

Agnatha (Jawless Fish)- The oldest class of fishes is the Agnatha. It consists of jawless fish that do not have scales.
Examples of these are the lampreys and hagfish.

Chondrichthyes (Cartilaginous Fish) These are fishes that have skeletons consisting of rigid, rubber-like cartilage
rather than bone. Examples of these include sharks and rays.

Osteichthyes (Bony Fish) All bony fishes, like the clownfish, puffer fish, and tuna are members of the class
Osteichthyes. Osteichthyes are divided into the ray-finned fish and lobe-finned fish.

2. Amphibia (Amphibians) Amphibians start their lives under water and live on land as they mature. A lot of
these species must maintain moisture in their skin by often returning to wet areas. Frogs, toads, and
salamanders are amphibians. All of them return to the water in order to reproduce and lay their eggs. They
start life with gills and later develop lungs to breathe air.
3. Reptilia (Reptiles) Examples of reptiles are alligators, lizards, snakes, and turtles. All of them have lungs to
breathe on land and skin that do not need to be constantly kept wet. They produce eggs which usually have a
leather-hard shell to protect the embryo from drying out.
4. Aves (Birds) Birds are vertebrates characterized as feathered, winged, two-legged, warm-blooded and egg-
laying animals. They protect their eggs by laying them high above the ground, away from predators.
5. Mammalia (Mammals) Mammals conceive their young within the reproductive organ of the mother and, after
birth, nourish them with milk produced by their mammary glands. Mammals are warm-blooded and are able to
keep their body temperature constant. There are three types of mammals, which include monotremes,
marsupials, and placentals.
Monotremes are the only group of mammals that lay eggs. Their young get milk by licking the mother’s fur.
Examples of monotremes are the duck billed platypus and the echidna.
Marsupials are pouched mammals. Animals like the kangaroo and koala give birth to their young as a tiny
embryo. The babies attach to the mother’s nipples to complete their development.
The most common mammals are the placentals. Placental mammals nourish their young inside the mother’s
womb. They are usually covered with hair. However, placental mammals also include dolphins and whales.
