Camel Caravans – A line of camels carrying passengers and goods between points on a regular or
semi-regular service.
- In the 8th century AD, after camels were introduced into North Africa, Muslim North African
traders began organizing regular camel caravans through Western Sahara.
- The first route appears to have run between Wadi Draa (southern Morocco) and the Empire
of Ghana (southern Mali) in the mid-8th century AD, passing through an area of the Sahara
controlled by the Sanhcan.
- Items are loaded onto the back of a camel, which can go over terrain that vehicles cannot
pass through often with more than one camel traveling in a procession.
- Known as a caravan, the camels are tied together to be driven to their destination with their
load.
- By far the greatest use of camel caravans occurs between North and West Africa by the
Tuareg, Shuwa, and Hassaniyya.
- As well as culturally affiliated groups such as the Tubou, Hausa, and Songhay. These camel
trains trade in and around the Sahara and Sahel deserts.
