To make your study of Mandarin Chinese as rewarding and successful as

1 是 (shì, to be)
In a simple statement, 是 is used to identify or define the subject, and is
followed by a noun/noun phrase.

Tip
• 他是中国人。He is Chinese. (‘Chinese’ is a noun and identity.)
The word order • 她是我姐姐。She is my elder sister. (‘my elder sister’ is a noun phrase
in the question and identity.)
