Good morning / afternoon!


I am Paulo Morales from Davao Oriental State University. I am
conducting a qualitative study entitled THE STRUGGLES OF A NON-CAMPUS
JOURNALIST: A STORY TO TELL as a final requirement for my MASTER OF
ARTS IN EDUCATION TEACHING ENGLISH. This interview is conducted to
explore and understand the lived experiences and struggles of non-campus
journalists school paper advisers to handle campus journalism.
Is it alright if I will record our conversation through audio recorder? My
purpose of recording our conversation is to gather as much as possible all the
necessary information that I need in this study, and also be able to have a
smooth and spontaneous flow of discussion regarding this matter. I can assure
you that all responses will be held confidential by assigning you a number /
alias to protect your name. If you agree with me and with this interview, and
the recording of your responses, then you can now sign this consent form that I
will give to you.
I will begin our conversation by asking you some questions, and please
answer these as best as you can. You can expound your answer to make it clear
and comprehensible. May I start.

1. What are the journalistic issues of non-campus journalists who become


school paper advisers on campus journalism?

A. What are the major problems that you encountered as a non-campus


journalist who become school paper advisers in promoting campus journalism?

B. What are the journalistic issues that you encountered in learning the skills
in:
a. News gathering
b. Interviewing
c. Creating Stories for Journalistic Writing

2. How do the non-campus journalists-school paper advisers cope with the


challenges in campus journalism?

A. What coping strategies did you use to overcome your inexperience as a


school paper adviser?
B. What are your strategies to train your students in campus journalism?

3. What insights can the informants share to their peers and to the
campus journalism community in general?

A. Are trainings/ seminars enough in acquiring the basic background of


journalistic writing and campus journalism as a whole? If yes, why? If no, why?

B. What could be the necessary intervention needed by inexperienced school


paper advisers in keeping abreast of the latest and the trends in campus
journalism?

SAMPLE INFORMED CONSENT OF THE INFORMANTS
INFORMED CONSENT

I hereby give my consent for my participation in the current study, which will
investigate the experiences of elementary, Junior, and Senior High school
teachers handling the school paper publications in their respective schools and
as mandated by Department of Education (DepEd). I understand that the
person responsible for this study is Mr. Paulo Morales who can be contacted
through his mobile phone number 09356166390. The objective of the study has
been explained to me thoroughly.

Mr. Morales has clarified: 1) that my participation in this study will involve
answering questions during a face-to-face interview which will focus on my
actual experiences in handling the school paper advisory and the coping
strategies I used; 2) that the information obtained in these questionnaires is
expected to provide valuable information on the matter which may help address
problems that may result from teachers experiencing challenges; 3) that there
are no expected risks to me as a result of my participation in study; and 4) that
there is no financial compensation for my participation.

Mr. Morales has also explained to me that my participation in this study is


voluntary and that there will be no negative consequences to me if I choose not
to participate. He has also explained to me that any information that I provide
will be kept confidential. Only he will have access to the information that I
provide and my name nor that of my school will never be attached to any
information that is produced from the study.

In addition, Mr. Morales has also made it clear to me that the interview will only
be tape recorded with my consent and approval and therefore will respect my
decision if I prefer no voice recording of the interview.

The investigator has agreed to answer any questions that I may have
concerning the procedures. I understand that I may discontinue my personal
participation at any time I choose without penalty.
