Relations and Functions Edited

The document defines relations and functions, differentiating the two. It provides examples of relations shown through ordered pairs, tables of values, and mapping designs. A relation pairs each input with one or more outputs, while a function pairs each input with exactly one output. The document uses examples to demonstrate how to identify whether a relation represents a function based on having unique inputs. It also introduces the vertical line test as a way to determine if a graph shows a function. Key concepts covered are domain, range, and using examples to classify relations as functions or not.

Relations and Functions

Competency to be developed:

Represents real-life situations using functions, including piece-wise

functions
Define a relation and function,
Differentiate relations from functions,
Identify relations and functions
Relate relations and functions in real life situations

1-6 Relations and Functions 1

Review
◼ A relation between two variables x and y
is a set of ordered pairs
◼ An ordered pair consist of an x and y-
coordinate
◼ A relation may be viewed as ordered pairs,
mapping design, table, equation, or written in
sentences
◼ x-values are inputs, domain, independent
variable
◼ y-values are outputs, range, dependent
variable

Example of an ordered pair:
( 2 , 0 ) ( -1 , - 18 )
Example of Table of Values:
x -2 4 6
y 3 -1 4

Example of Mapping Design:

Example 1

{(0, −5),(1, −4),(2, −3),(3, −2),(4, −1),(5, 0)}

•What is the domain?

{0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
What is the range?
{-5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0}

Input 4 –5 0 9 –1

Output –2 7

•What is the domain?

{4, -5, 0, 9, -1}
•What is the range?
{-2, 7}

Is a relation a function?

What is a function?
“a function is…a relation in which every input is
paired with exactly one output”
meaning: every element in domain there should always be one
pair in the range

Is a relation a function?
•Focus on the x-coordinates, when given a relation

If the set of ordered pairs have different x-coordinates,

it IS A function

If the set of ordered pairs have same x-coordinates,

it is NOT a function

•Y-coordinates have no bearing in determining

functions

if a vertical line drawn through its graph,
passes through only one point.
