Kimberly Angel Garciano BIT - ET 3A ELEXTECH 315 Activity 1

The document is an activity sheet from Cebu Technological University for a Bachelor of Industrial Technology Electronics Technology course. The activity involves students identifying common parts inside a computer system unit, taking photos of each part, and answering questions. Key parts identified include the power supply, CPU, CPU fan/heatsink, RAM, hard disk drive, motherboard, video card, LAN card, SATA/IDE cables, and CD/DVD writer. Students are asked to explain if identifying the parts was difficult and describe the functions of three parts: the hard disk drive for magnetic data storage, the motherboard as the main circuit board connecting components, and RAM for quick access to the operating system, programs and current data.

BACHELOR OF INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

ELECTRONICS TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT
1st Semester, AY: 2022 – 2023
Activity No.1
IDENTIFYING THE COMMON PARTS OF THE SYSTEM UNIT

Name: Kimberly Angel Garciano Yr. & Sec.: BIT – ET 3A Date: September 11, 2023 Score _______

Objectives:
After the activity the students must have:
1. identified personally the different basic components or parts of the system unit.
2. explain the functions of its components or parts of the system unit.

Materials:
The following materials will be needed:
 Activity Sheet
 Camera for documentation

Guidelines: identify the following components or parts found inside the system unit. Using the camera of your mobile
phone take a picture together with the components.
Power supply CPU “Central Processing Unit” CPU Fan with Heatsink

RAM “Random Access Memory Hardisk Drive “HDD” Solid State Device “SSD”

MotherBoard Video Card LAN Card

Sata Cable IDE Cable CD/DVD Writer

Questions: (Answer it briefly)

1. Did you had a hard time to identify the different parts inside the system unit? Why?

Yes!! It is a very important component in a computer because the system unit composed the most important
parts in the computer like the Motherboard, CPU, Ports and etc. and it has a big part that helps to run the Computer.

2. Based on the activity you performed, select 3 component or parts found inside the system unit and explain briefly its
function.

 A hard disk drive (HDD), hard disk, hard drive, or fixed disk,is an electro-mechanical data storage
device that stores and retrieves digital data using magnetic storage with one or more rigid rapidly
rotating platters coated with magnetic material. The platters are paired with magnetic heads, usually
arranged on a moving actuator arm, which read and write data to the platter surfaces. Data is accessed
in a random-access manner, meaning that individual blocks of data can be stored and retrieved in any
order. HDDs are a type of non-volatile storage, retaining stored data when powered off. Modern HDDs
are typically in the form of a small rectangular box.

 A motherboard (also called mainboard, main circuit board, MB, mboard, backplane board, base board,
system board, mobo; or in Apple computers logic board) is the main printed circuit board (PCB) in
general-purpose computers and other expandable systems. It holds and allows communication
between many of the crucial electronic components of a system, such as the central processing unit
(CPU) and memory, and provides connectors for other peripherals. Unlike a backplane, a motherboard
usually contains significant sub-systems, such as the central processor, the chipset’s input/output and
memory controllers, interface connectors, and other components integrated for general use.
Motherboard means specifically a PCB with expansion capabilities. As the name suggests, this board is
often referred to as the “mother” of all components attached to it, which often include peripherals,
interface cards, and daughterboards: sound cards, video cards, network cards, host bus adapters, TV
tuner cards, IEEE 1394 cards, and a variety of other custom components.

 RAM (Random Access Memory) is the hardware in a computing device where the operating system
(OS), application programs and data in current use are kept so they can be quickly reached by the
device’s processor. RAM is the main memory in a computer. It is much faster to read from and write to
than other kinds of storage, such as a hard disk drive (HDD), solid-state drive (SSD) or optical
drive.Random Access Memory is volatile. That means data is retained in RAM as long as the computer
is on, but it is lost when the computer is turned off. When the computer is rebooted, the OS and other
files are reloaded into RAM, usually from an HDD or SSD.
