1. Industries: Meaning, functions, examples of main companies
in Kenya
2. Industrial Machines: Conveyors, pumps, elevators, valves,
compressors, crushers, centrifugals etc.
3. Industrial Power: Industrial view on power generation and
distribution
4. Electrical Machines: alternators, transformers, motors,
heaters, lighting (Concept of step up/down …..

Day 2: Introduction with hard wiring
demonstrations and exercises
5. Low voltage switching devices: Circuit breakers, contactors,
fuses, motor starters
6. Pilot devices; pilot lamps, selector switches, push buttons,
buzzers, stack lights etc
7. Electrical control devices: contactors, relays, timers etc
8. Electrical measuring/test equipment: DMM, Clamp meter

9. Instrumentation: Analog instruments, digital instruments,


mechanical switches, electronic switches, PNP, NPN
inductive switches/sensors, transmitters (pressure, flow,
level, temperature), standard instrumentation signals: 0-
20ma, 4-20ma, 0-5vdc, 0-10vdc, T/C, RTDs, PID indicators:
Wiring a transmitters, 2 wire, 3 wire instruments,
instrumentation power: 230 vac, 24vdc, 24vac; (SMPS,
control transformer, UPS), actuators: Wiring exercises
10. Smart transmitters: Scaling concept using Hart
communicator
Day 3: Instrumentation documents
11. Basic instrumentation documents/drawing: PLC wiring
drawings, ISA Symbols, PID drawings, IO list, Control loop
schematics and Logic drawings. Exercises
Day 4: PLC: Introduction
12. Basic concept of PLCs and their history
13. PLCs use in industrial automation and control systems vs
traditional relays and timers
14. Components of PLCs and how they work together: CPU,
memory, input/output modules, power supply,
communication modules
15. Types of PLCs: Depending on size and mounting: Modular,
compact
16. Common brands of PLCs used in industry: Siemens, Allen
Bradley, ABB, Schneider, Omron, Mitsubishi, Delta etc;
