INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study

In the modern world, time is seen as an indefinitely divisible and usable commodity. It

helps to infuse the concept of time through the institution. All the material and human resources

possessed by organizations can be enhanced in the course of time or be transformed as time goes

on; yet the only asset that cannot be changed or purchased or stored is time itself. The secret to

achieving success in life is effectively managing this resource that everyone possesses equally

and paying sufficient emphasis to planning (Macan, Shahani, Dipboye & Phillips, 2000). Though

effective and efficient use of time varies with respect to the tasks performed, the further increase

in the level of knowledge and skills expected from modern employees has further increased the

necessity of time planning. The road to success in social life passes through effective and

efficient working which is only possible via time management. The competitive environment we

live in today encourages people from as early as their elementary education to plan and manage

time effectively. Time management plays a vital role in improving student’s academic

performance and achievements. Each student should have time management ability which

includes setting goals & priorities, using time management mechanism and being organized in

using time. Here time management is only possible through self-motivation; performance, ability

and motivation (Brigitte, 2005). These are the few activities performed by today’s secondary

students, which act as a barrier between them and their academic performance. Due to miss

management of time they gap behind.

Good time management allows you to accomplish more in a shorter period of time, which

leads to more free time, let you take advantage of learning opportunities, lowers your stress,

helps you focus, and leads to more career success. Each benefit of time management improves

another aspect of your life.

There is no one right way to manage our time; however; it is important to get to know our

self, so we can make good decisions about how to use our time. Likewise, in the process of

providing educational services this issue has been a subject of interest discussed and emphasized

in several platforms and an attempt has been initiated to assess and analyze time and the time

management attitudes and behaviors of students in educational institutes (Denlinger, 2009).

excuses and absences. The data that will be gathered is in regard to the ability of the respondents

to understand the given questions.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of this study will be great help to the following:

Students: Students themselves will no longer suffer from lack of time management skills;

students will use the findings to reflect on their studying and use it in the future at University

time.

Teachers: It will be useful for school heads to understand the importance of teaching students

time managementskills.

Parents: It will help them to know what are the things that their childrens do in School and this

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Related Literature

Foreign
“Time Management and Student’s Academic Performance in Higher Institutions, Nigeria”

There is a titanic difference between secondary and higher education when it comes to

managing time and academic responsibilities. In secondary education, there was the kind of

learning that includes an explanation of everything. On the other hand, when students enter

university, they find out that what they learn is a lecture, that only includes superficial

information and the rest is their job to know about and explore further (Briton, 2001). Time

management is a skill that every student should not only know, but also apply. A lot of university

students complain about running out of time when asked to do a certain task, they get frustrated

because they are not able to make it before the deadline. Time management is extremely
important, especially when it comes to university students because it will boost their grades and

enhance their productivity (Hellsten, 2002). However, most of the time students face problems

like task aversion and uncertainty, so they start to procrastinate because they lack organizational

skills. As a result, students will not be able to organize duties according to their priorities, so they

get distracted easily, ending up procrastinating. As we can see, time management is quite

essential to any university student, and it is one of the keys to higher academic achievements

(Kelly, pdfs.semanticscholar.org, 2004).

“Effect of Time Management Skills on Students’ Academic Performance”

Poor time management behaviors such as improper allocation of time or last –minute

preparation for examinations, have been frequently been discussed as one of the prime source of

poor academic performance. It is quite a common practice that students become overcome with

feelings that there is not sufficient time to perform their all tasks adequately. It is mostly because

of inefficiency in time management. According to (Svenson, 1992), time management refers to

the way students manage their time in order to have better academic performance which is

invaluable for academic success. Thus, it is important for students to know the first step of time

management i. e. giving priority to the important matters, and should remain focused on issues

essential for success. In line with these notions, (Gloe, 1999) argued that the techniques of time

management are the best ways to manage course materials successfully. These includes group

discussion, (2016 )exchanging ideas and sharing views on key points, which ultimately help

students to perform better in the examination leads to superior academic performance. Other

researchers have described time management as the way by which an individual more efficiently

accomplishes tasks and goals; having balance, flexibility, and control over time; setting priorities

and scheduling tasks.

“Time Management, External Motivation and Students Academic Performance; Evidence

from Malaysian Public University”

According to (Sansgiry, 2004)the basic time management skills begin with prioritizing,

placing more emphasis on important tasks, being able to say ‘no’ to less important issue, and

being able to stop and start immediately specific activities at pre-set schedules. They have also

argued that implementing such strategy related to time management, one must engage in a “to

do” list and need discipline to stay focused with the list in order to have better management of

one’s available time. Other important issues related to time management which includes

developing effective study habits, critically analyzing problems and assignments, knowing one’s

peak hour of concentration, learning effective memorization techniques, thinking aloud and most

importantly, avoid procrastination.

Local Study

On the study conducted by (Padua, 2003)as per time management and its bearing on

study habits of adolescents, it’s not just the behavioral and physical aspects of time managing

that recede efficiency, but also, the social constraints, that poor study habits and poor time

management among the students considerably caused by continuous decline of education in our

country. These habits were probably influenced by the negative attitudes on their parents who

were not able to finish their schooling. So, with the lack of money to send their responsibilities at

home, in school, and in community as well is put in risk. To solve these problems, students must
go made to realize his natural capabilities in improving one’s life- he must accept the reality that

improving one’s self upon his own performance. Then other as a student, he must give

knowledge or techniques of effective study habits, proper time management and develop virtues

relating on studying.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The study will use correlational method of research to determine the significant relation of the time

management to the academic performances of the students.

Population and Locale of the study

The study will be conducted at Maticmatic National High School located at Barangay Maticmatic,

Sta.Barbara Pangasinan.. Fifty (50) students from Grade 12 Students of Maticmatic National High

School will be the respondents of the study.

Research Instruments

The research instrument that will be used in the analysis of the data was obtained through closed-

ended questionnaires that were gathered from the respondents after they answered the necessary

questions that helped on the results of the study.

Data Gathering

The study attempt to find out the “Effect of Time Management on Academic Performance of

Grade 12 Students”. The effects were determined through a survey-test that will be made by the

researchers and will answer by the respondents of the study.

The survey-test has 3 sections, Section A, Section B and Section C. Section A requested

information regarding demographic while Section B is the Level of Time Management

Questionnaire. It has 3 categories: Before School, During School, and During Weekend. Each

scale item has four response categories: 'Always', 'Often', 'Rarely', and 'Never' as 1.

Statistical Treatment

To analyze and interpret the data, the researchers will use:

Mean- a value that is calculated by adding quantities together and then dividing the total by the

number of quantities.
Formula

x̄ = ∑x
____
n

Where:

x= items/value

n= total number of items/value

x̄= mean
