received by the system acting as load.

Consider a 200V/50V, 50Hz, 10kVA single phase two-winding transformer.
Q4a.
(i) If the high voltage (HV) side of the transformer is supplied from a 48 V battery having 1 Ω internal
resistance, find the output voltage across the low voltage (LV) terminals at steady state for the following
cases: (a) the LV side is open circuited, and (b) a resistance of 10 Ω is connected across the LV side.

(ii) How the coils of this two-winding transformer can be connected to form an autotransformer having
maximum VA rating at the output? Justify your solution with proper circuit diagram including dots.

Q4b. A 10 kVA, 50 V, 50 Hz load is to be supplied from a 200 V, 50 Hz ideal voltage source. This is carried
out by employing a two-winding transformer (case A) or an autotransformer (case B) of suitable rating. Find the
ratio of requirement of copper in case B with respect to case A. [4 marks]

Two coils shown in Fig. Q4b are magnetically coupled. The self-
Q4c. inductances of coil having terminals A-B and C-D are 10 mH and 8
mH respectively.
(i)What can be the maximum value of M (in mH) that can be
achieved for this arrangement? [1 mark]

(ii) If a 10 V (RMS), 50 Hz sinusoidal supply is connected across A-

Fig. Q4b B terminals, what will be the RMS value of voltage induced across
open circuited terminals C-D? Consider the value of M obtained in
part (i) of this question for calculation, if required. [4 marks]

The nameplate of a single-phase transformer reads: 10MVA, 50Hz, 25kV/10kV, leakage impedance
Q5a. (Zeq) = 0.2 p.u.. During short-circuit (SC) test on the high voltage (HV) side of this transformer (with
low voltage (LV) side shorted), the ammeter and wattmeter readings were 200A and 50kW respectively.
(i) What is the value of the voltage in p.u. that was applied during the above-mentioned SC test? [1 mark]

Also find the value of total leakage reactance (xeq) referred to the HV side. [3 marks]

(ii) While supplying a load, the terminal voltages of the HV side and LV side of this transformer are
found to be 25kV∠0° and 10kV∠10° respectively. The load is connected to which terminals (i.e., LV
terminals or HV terminals) of the transformer? [1 mark]

Neglecting winding resistances, find the active power delivered by the transformer. [3 marks]

Also find the regulation of the transformer under this operating condition. [2 marks]

Fig. Q5(b)-(i) Fig. Q5(b)-(ii) Fig. Q5(b)-(iii)

The voltage ratings of the two windings, a-b and c-d of a 4 kVA, 50 Hz transformer (shown in Fig.
Q5(b)-(i)) are 400 V and 200 V respectively. The parameters of the transformer are:
Self-inductance of winding a-b, Lab = 5.0 H; Self-inductance of winding c-d, Lcd = 1.25 H;
Co-efficient of coupling, k = 0.98;
Number of turns of winding a-b, Nab = 360; Number of turns of winding c-d, Ncd = 180;

Find the leakage reactance of the transformer. [2 marks]

Now, this transformer has to be used as an inductor such that none of its limits (rated voltage and current
of the windings and rated flux density of the core) is violated. Two probable connections to achieve this
are shown in Fig. Q5(b)-(ii) and Fig. Q5(b)-(iii). For each of these connections, find the net inductance.

For Fig. Q5(b)-(i): For Fig. Q5(b)-(ii): [4 marks]

Now, for the inductor having larger inductance find the current rating, the VA rating and the peak value
of maximum total flux in the core. Losses of the transformer are neglected and the magnetizing current
is considered sinusoidal. [4 marks]
