G9 CSS Q1 Lesson 2 Common Tools and Equipment For Computer Systems Servicing

This document discusses common tools and equipment used for computer system servicing. It identifies four main categories of tools: electro-static discharge tools to prevent static damage, hand tools like screwdrivers and pliers for assembly/disassembly, cleaning tools such as compressed air and brushes, and diagnostic tools like multi-meters and LAN testers for troubleshooting issues. Safety is important when using these tools to avoid damaging computer components.

COMMON TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

FOR COMPUTER SYSTEMS SERVICING
A tool is a piece of equipment that is designed to help with a specific task
that handles a certain function or command. There are different tools commonly
used for computer hardware repair, maintenance, and testing devices. Tools
should be properly cleaned, maintained, and kept after use so that they will last
long and always function properly. It is also very important to keep all tools in a
secure and safe place to keep away from accidents. Using the right tool will avoid
any damage to any part of the computer. Therefore, safety is important.

The following are the different tools/materials needed to complete the work
of assembling/disassembling computers.
• Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) tools
• Hand tools
• Cleaning tools
• Diagnostic tools

Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) Tools Static electricity is easily

generated by friction on carpets, tile flooring, clothing, hair, fabric, etc. The friction
of moving air alone will charge suspended particles and cause the buildup of static
electrical charges on people and objects in the environment. Grounded antistatic
work mats used with antistatic wrist straps provide the most basic means for the
controlled discharge of electrostatic electricity.

Anti-static wrist strap – Used to prevent ESD damage to computer equipment.

Anti-static mat – Used to stand on or place hardware on to prevent static
electricity from building up.

Hand Tools – A hand tool is a device for performing work on a material or a

physical system using only hands. Hand tools can be used manually or electrically
powered, using electrical current. Examples of Hand Tools are as follows:

Flat Head Screwdriver – used to loosen or tighten slotted screws

Philips Head Screwdriver – used to loosen or tighten cross-head screws

Torx Screwdriver – used to loosen or tighten screws that have a star-like
depression on the top, a feature that is mainly found on laptops.

Needle-nose Pliers – Used to hold small parts.

Side cutter / Wire cutter – used to strip and cut wires

Tweezers – used to manipulate small parts

Part Retriever – used to retrieve parts from a location that is too small for your
hand to fit.

Flashlight – used to light up areas that you cannot see well.

Soldering Iron – is a hand tool used in soldering. It supplies heat to melt

the solder so that it can flow into the joint between two work pieces. A soldering
iron is composed of a heated metal tip and an insulated handle.
Materials used in soldering:

Soldering Stand
This is s simple soldering iron stand composed of a heavy-duty metal base and a
reinforced spring holder.

Soldering Lead
Is a fusible metal alloy used to join together metal work pieces.

Soldering Flux
As cleaning agents, fluxes facilitate soldering, brazing, and welding by removing
oxidation from the metals to be joined.
Crimping Tool
A crimping tool is a device used to conjoin two pieces of metal by deforming one
or both of them in a way that causes them to hold each other. The result of
the tool's work is called a crimp. A good example of crimping is the process of
affixing a connector to the end of a cable.

Wire Stripper
A wire stripper is a small, hand-held device used to strip the electrical insulation
from electric wires.
Precision Tool
A multi-function tool kit is used to loosen and tighten different types of screws.

Cleaning Tools – having the appropriate cleaning tools is essential when

maintaining
or repairing computers. Using these tools ensures that computer components are
not damaged during cleaning. Examples:

Lint-free Cloth – used to clean different computer components without scratching

or leaving debris.
Compressed Air – used to blow away dust and debris from different computer
parts without touching the components.

Cable Ties – used to bundle cables neatly inside and outside of a computer.

Brush
Use to remove dust and dirt in computer.
Parts Organizer – used to hold screws, jumpers, fasteners, and other small parts
and prevents them from getting mixed together.

Diagnostic Tools
Computers are easier to use and more dependable with each new generation of
hardware and operating system update, but that does not mean they are problem-
free. Here are the most popular tools for diagnosing your computer problems:

Multi-tester or multi-meter – used to test the integrity of circuits and the quality
of electricity in computer components
LAN tester
A LAN tester is mainly used for testing ethernet cables for faults or missing pair
connections.

Loopback Adapter – used to test the functionality of computer ports.
