Lesson 1 - Alan Turing Worksheet 2023

Alan Turing was a mathematician and computer scientist who helped crack the German Enigma code during World War 2 using a machine he designed called the 'bombe'. Working at Bletchley Park, he was able to decrypt secret messages, though his work remained unknown to the public at the time. After the war, Turing was prosecuted for being homosexual, which was illegal, and was forced to undergo hormone therapy, which caused depression and ultimately led to his suicide in 1954.

Alan Turing and Code Cracking

Task 1:

Who is this man and what did he do that was so important?

I expect you to write in full sentences and discuss the issues faced during the war with German encrypted messages
and how Alan Turing helped in the process of decrypting messages through the use of an invention. Minimum 75 words

Alan Turing - He was a mathematician as well as the first

computer scientist.

He helped to crack the Enigma machine during WW2 using his

custom designed machine the ‘bombe’.

He worked in Bletchley park near Milton Keynes, and at the time

he was not known as a decrypter by the public.

However, once he cracked Enigma he was later found out for

being Homosexual, and at the time this was an offence.

He had two options: Prison, or choosing to take injections to

‘alter his sexuality’.

He chose the drugs, but as a result developed depression and

commited suicide 2 years later.

Task 2:

Study the ‘PigPen Cipher Key’, then use it to crack the three codes below.

1.
PigPen Key:

PIGPEN CIPHER

2.
ITS A SECRET

3.

ENCRYPTION

4.

PLEASE DECRYPT THIS MESSAGE

Task 3

Another way to encrypt messages is to use the Caesar Cipher. A Caesar cipher, also
known as Caesar shift, is one of the simplest and most widely known encryption
techniques. It is a type of substitution cipher in which each letter in the plaintext is
replaced by a letter some fixed number of positions down the alphabet. For example,
with a left shift of 3, D would be replaced by A, E would become B, and so on. The
method is named after Julius Caesar, who used it in his private correspondence.
1. Using the Caesar Cipher with a left shift of 3 (see table), work out the following
messages.

FKULVWPDV LV RYHU

CHRISTMAS IS OVER

DODQ WXULQJ

ALAN TURING

FDHVDU FLSKHU

CAESAR CIPHER

2. Using a Caesar Cipher with a right shift of 3, work out the following messages.

F IFHB PZELLI

I LIKE SCHOOL

F ILSB QLJXQLBP

I LOVE TOMATOES

F XJ X ZXBPXO ZFMEBO

I AM A CAESAR CIPHER
