Science 10 Worksheet Lesson 1

1) Earthquake epicenters, active volcanoes, and major mountain belts are distributed along plate boundaries. 2) Earthquake epicenters and volcanoes are commonly located along plate boundaries such as mid-ocean ridges and subduction zones. 3) Mountain ranges are also often found in these areas, relating their distribution to the movement and collisions of tectonic plates.

SCIENCE 10 WORKSHEET

Name: __________________________________________ Section : _____________________ Score: ___________

Lesson 1 Objective: At the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to describe and relate the distribution of active
volcanoes, earthquake epicenters and major mountain belts to plate tectonics theory.

Vocabulary:
Earthquake – vibration of earth due to the rapid release of energy
Epicenter – the location of the origin of the earthquake directly above on the surface of the earth
Hypocenter – the location below the earth’s surface where the earthquake starts
Volcano – An opening in the Earth’s crust where magma erupts to the surface.
Active volcano – These are volcanoes that are “currently erupting or are expected to erupt in the near future”
Mountain Range – A mountain range or a hill range is a series of mountains or hills arranged in a line and are
connected by high ground. It is formed by a variety of geological processes, but most of the
significant changes on the Earth are the results of plate tectonic activities.
