Revit Project - Win 2023 - Handout

This document provides instructions for creating a 3D model of a steel structure system in Revit for a commercial building project. It outlines steps to add grids, levels, structural walls, beams, columns, floor systems, footings and tags. It also describes how to generate schedules and material takeoffs for the structural components, including beams, columns, walls, floors and foundations. The goal is for students to learn how to model a steel structure in Revit and extract quantity information for estimating. Required submissions are the Revit project file, material takeoff Excel file, and interference report.

A Commercial Building – Adding

Steel Structure system
AN INDIVIDUAL PROJECT

TOTAL WEIGHT 15% - 60 MARKS

Due (Friday April 21 @ 11:59 PM)

Objectives
Students will learn how to build a 3D model for a Commercial Construction project
using the Architecture and structure elements and will learn how to create schedules
quantities and export materials take-offs spreadsheets.

*Participating and attendance in the lab is highly expected. It is your

responsibility to check your progress and follow-up with your instructor- check
SAIT Policy- Student Code of Conduct.1

• A weekly follow up will be conducted to check the progress of every student.

• Your instructor should see your progress to make sure that you are on the right
track

• Working on this project will be during lab time and it is expected that you will put
few working hours at home to keep your progress on track.

Required Submissions ( 3 files):

1) Revit Project file (.rvt)
2) Takeoffs excel file (.xlsx)
3) Check for interference report (HTML) file

STEPS

Start a new project

Use a new structural template

Change unites for the “length” to “meters” and rounding 2 decimal places

Steel Structure systems

Add Grids

• Open your 1st level floor plan view

• Go to structure Tab – Datum Panel>>Create Grids: Add Horizontal grids : 1,2,3, & 4 and
vertical grids A, B, &C -Spacing: 8m (8000mm)

FLOOR PLAN -GRID

Set Levels

• Go to one of the building elevation views

• Under Datum panel: select level
• Add all four levels, rename them and
adjust their height as shown in the image.

Add Structural Wall

For the Core : Go to structure Tab: structural wall use: foundation Concrete
walls 300mm (you may start with the generic wall then you must use duplicate
to change the material to concrete)

• Line location: Wall Center

• Top constraint: level 3
• Base constraint: level 0

Placing Beam
• Go to structure tab→ structural framing Beam→ Use: UB-406x178x60 . [NOTE: Student may
need to load the beam system if it does not exist in the template].

• In Level 1 Floor plan view place your beams. [Note: Students may need to change the detail view level to :
Fine to make the beams visible].

3 3

Add Columns

• On level 1 floor plan view place your columns. Use structural Columns – vertical
Columns-Type: UC- Universal Column- Column 305x305x97UC. NOTE: Student may need to load
the column system if it does not exist in the template].

• Adjust the levels from level 0 to level 3: Set levels constraints: Bottom: L0 and Top :L3.

• NOw change your view style to " Shading".

• Go to 3D view to adjust the beams with the columns using “Notch” tool
in the Geometry panel: Under the modify tab.
• Remember: Beam first then the column!
• Remember to do this step again when creating the typical floors.

Add a beam system

You need to go back to level 1 floor plan view

Structure tab: Beam system
Use beams size: 254-102x28UB (use
structure Framing→ Steel beam→UB-Universal- 254-102x28UB*

- Use Sketch Beam System:

- Set boundary lines ( you may use pick line)
- Use trim and extent to adjust your drafting lines for the boundary lines

Determine the direction of your beam system

- Add spacing 1.60m
Click on the check mark to finish the command.
* NOTE: Student may need to load the beam system if it does not exist in the template [ same pathe you used for uploading
the main beams system above].

Now….
Adjust the secondary beams system beams over the main big beams

• Go to the east elevation view to chech your beam system. Note that you need to
change the view style to “wireframe” to see your secondary beam system.
• Select your beam system and in the properties add offset to all the beam system
[ elevation from level] with value = to 0.26 m.
• Go to your 3D to see your changes

ADDING FLOORS
Go to level 1
Structure→ Add floor→ Use “160mm Concrete on metal deck with corus ComFlor 46”.
Note: the direction of the floor system must be perpendicular to the beam system

Adjust the floor level

• Create a building section and measure the floor depth
• Go to the properties and use 0.47m as the height offset from level .

Before After

Edit the floor boundary [ columns & floors adjustment]

• Select your floor and use edit footprint to adjust the floor
around each column at the perimeter of the floor slab.
• See a snapshot of a sample editing .

Copy systems

• Now copy and past to levels 2, and 3 both: the beams

system and the floor
• Offset the concrete core 2 meter up.

Add Footings
• Add isolated foundation pads:
• Add Isolated pads size: rectangular 1800x1200x450mm
• Add strip footing (300x600x450mm)
• Edit type: change materials and finishes >> Concrete cast in place 20 MPa

Check for any interference

Submit your report with your
final submission Report

Add Tags on levels 1 & 2

• Go to annotate>> Tag by Category. Add tags to
the structural columns and the structural beams.
for each floor.

• Change the view detail to coarse in the floor

plan views.

• Do the same for the other levels.
