CL324 - 2023 - Tutorial 02

This document contains 6 problems related to chemical reaction engineering: 1) Calculating time for a first-order gas-phase reaction in a batch reactor and initial/final pressures. 2) Determining size of a plug flow reactor for a specified conversion of a reacting gas feed. 3) Finding conversion of a gas-phase reaction in a plug flow reactor when the feed rate is reduced. 4) Writing the rate law as a function of conversion for a reaction in a batch reactor with a piston. 5) Arranging fluidized CSTR and PBR reactors to achieve a specified conversion for an exothermic reaction and determining catalyst weights needed. 6) Calculating

Tutorial-2 10/8/2023

1. The gas-phase reaction

A🡪B+C
3
Is carried out isothermally in a 20 dm constant volume batch reactor. Twenty moles of pure
A is initially placed in the reactor. The reactor is well mixed.
(a) If the reaction is first order:
−r A =k C A with k = 0.865 min-1
calculate the time necessary to reduce the number of moles of A in the reactor to 0.2
mol.

(b) If the temperature is 127⁰C, what is the initial total pressure? What is the final total
pressure assuming the reaction goes to completion?

2. At 6500C phosphine vapour decomposes as follows

4 PH3 → P4 + 6H2, -rphosphine = (10hr-1) Cphosphine

What size of the plug flow reactor operating at 650 0C and 11.4 atm is needed for 75%
conversion of 10 mol/hr of phosphine in a 2/3 phosphine and 1/3 inert feed.

3. The irreversible elementary reaction 2 A 🡪 B takes place in the gas phase in an isothermal tubular
plug flow reactor. Reactant A and diluent C are fed in equimolar ratio and the conversion of A is
80%. If the molar feed rate of A is cut in half, what is the conversion of A assuming that the feed rate
of C is left unchanged? Assume ideal behaviour and that the reactor temperature remains
unchanged.

4. Consider a cylindrical batch reactor that has one end fitted with a frictionless piston attached to a
spring. The reaction
A + B 🡪 8C
with the rate expression -rA=kCA2CB is taking place in this type of reactor.
(a) Write the rate law solely as a function of conversion numerically evaluating all possible symbols.
(b) What is the conversion and rate of reaction when V=0.2 ft 3?
Additional information:
1. Equal moles of A and B are present at t=0.
2. Initial volume=0.15 ft3.
3. k1=1(ft3/lb-mol)2s-1
4. Relation between reactor volume and pressure: V=0.1P (V in ft 3
and P in atm)
5. Temperature of the system=140 °F.

CL 324, Tutorial # 2; 10/8/2023. 1

6. Gas constant = 0.73 ft3atm/(lb-mol°R)

5. The curve shown in figure: 2-1 is typical of a reaction carried out isothermally, while the
curve shown in figure P2-12 is typical of an exothermic reaction carried out adiabatically.
Figure: P2-12

(a) Assuming that you have fluidized CSTR and a PBR containing equal weight of catalyst,
how should they be arranged for this adiabatic reaction? In each case use the smallest
amount of catalyst weight and still achieve 80% conversion.
(b) What fluidized CSTR weight is necessary to achieve 50% conversion?
(c) What PBR weight is necessary to achieve 50% conversion?

6. We plan to replace our present mixed flow reactor with one having double the volume. For
the same aqueous feed (10 mol A/lit) and the same feed rate find the new conversion. The
reaction kinetics is represented by,

A → R -rA = k CA1.5

and present conversion is 70%.
