Every year, the Schools Division Office I Pangasinan is searching for the best implementers of the
Gulayan sa Paaralan Program to establish and promote agricultural arts program. This program aims to
improve and increase vegetable production and consumption of food which are applicable to their homes
and important for their household security. It also aims to establish school gardens to serve as main source
of food to sustain supplementary feeding. It also showcase small-scale production models in schools to be
replicated in the household.
As we all know, most of the learners in any places of our country belong to poor families and have
greater possibility of dropping out in their basic education just because of hunger and malnutrition in
school and besides helping their parents to earn a living. Furthermore, the health and nutrition of these
learners are crucial factor affecting their academic performance. So the Sta. Maria Elementary School
grade four Diamond adviser encouraged her learners with the support of their parents to joined in the said
program. With the help of Sta. Maria PTA Officials headed by Gen, PTA President. the Sta. Maria Brgy.
Officials and some private individuals provided different varieties of seedlings to be planted by the learners
and parents supervised by respective advisers in each grade level.
“Gulayan sa Paaralan” is one of the activities that is very crucial to make our vegetables free from
destruction and make it appoint that learners understand the importance of vegetables in our body.
Teacher does explain to every learner to eat nutritious food. Primarily eating vegetables can make our
body stronger and free from diseases. It is also part of Department of Education yearly activity, they want
to pursue and implement this program to every school to support and preserve our environment as well as
our natural resources. Trees, plants and vegetables are very important in our ecosystem, it is a source of
raw materials for medicine, they are also source of food, and they protect us from flood so it is very crucial
to maintain a healthful environment. The variety of vegetables planted in Sta. Maria Elementary School are
eggplant, okra, sitaw, squash, saluyot, tomatoes, sili, gabi, monggo, calamansi. etc. and also have fruit
bearing trees such as kasoy, guava, rambutan, Papaya, banana and avocado. Teachers as well as the
learners find accurate place suited for the vegetables so that it will grow faster and safe. This activity
enlightens and teaches our beloved learners to plant more vegetables not only in the school premises but
also to the community. By having “Gulayan sa Paaralan” learners will learn to plant vegetables in their
backyard that can be a source of food by their family.
