This document discusses the concepts of force and friction in physics. It defines force as something that can cause motion or change an object's motion. Friction is defined as the force that opposes the motion of objects in contact. The document outlines the different types of forces and friction, their properties, effects, and methods to reduce and increase friction.

ACHIEVER'S SELF REVISION SHEET

Topic:FORCE & FRICTION
Session: 2023-2024
Name: ATHARV

When we push or pull an object we refer to it as a force. A

force is the reason, behind altering the condition of an
object. The direction of a force is determined by the way we
push or pull an object.
The SI unit, for measuring force is Newton (N).
Forces have effects:
1. A force can initiate motion in an object that was
previously stationary.
2. A force can alter the speed or direction of motion in an
object.
3. A force can bring a moving object to rest.
4. A force can cause deformation in an object.
Resultant Force:
When multiple forces act simultaneously on an object the
combined effect is called the Resultant force. If the forces
are in same direction they add up together and if opposite
their diffrence is taken as Resultant Force.

Types of forces
Contact force : A contact force acts when two objects are in
actual physical contact with each other.
Non contact force: Force that acts between two objects, which
are not in physical contact.
Friction: is a natural force which opposes motion of one
object on the surface of another object.
Properties of friction
 Frictional force is produced only when one object
actually moves or tends to move over a surface of another
object.
 The amount of friction varies from surface to surface.
 The amount of frictional force depends on the roughness
or smoothness of two surfaces in contact.
 The frictional force opposes motion of one object over
the surface of another object. Thus, it acts in a
direction opposite to that of motion.
Sliding friction: is frictional force exerted by a surface on
an object when it is actually sliding on the surface.
Rolling friction is frictional force exerted by a surface on
an object rolling over the surface.
Effects of friction
1.Friction opposes motion
2.Friction produces heat

Advantages of Friction
 You are able to light up matchstick.
 Moving vehicles can be stopped by applying brakes.
 Knitting, weaving, stitching work are possible due to
friction
Disadvantages of Friction
 Friction always opposes motion of a body over another.
 Frictional force between various parts of a machine
produces heat and noise.
 Heat produced due to continues use of machinery causes
wear and Tear of its moving parts.
 Our shoes and tires of vehicles wear out due to friction
[Friction is a necessary evil and it must be control
appropriately as per our need].
Methods to reduce friction
 You may reduce friction by making surfaces polished.
 By using lubricant such as oil and grease the moving
surfaces of machine are made smooth it reduces friction.
 By using wheels and rollers we can easily pull a heavy
suitcase because wheel and rollers reduce friction by
transforming sliding friction into rolling friction.

 Streamlined shape help of minimise frictional force due
to water and air that is why aeroplane and fishes have a
streamlined shape.
Methods to increase friction
 Grooves are provided on tyres of automobiles in order to
increase the friction.
 Athletes and mountaineers use special type of shoes,
spikes are provided in soles of their shoes so as to
increase friction and prevents slipping
 Grinding stones of Floor mills have rough surface
increase friction.
