Ch-4 Furrow Excercise

This document provides an example calculation to determine: (1) the desired time to cut-off irrigation (Tco = 1143 minutes), (2) the equivalent depths of surface runoff (dro = 120mm) and deep percolation (ddp = 5mm), and (3) the distribution pattern efficiency (ed = 37.5%) for a maize field with given intake family, furrow length, slope, roughness, net irrigation depth, inflow rate, and crop spacing. A series of equations are used to calculate the advance time, net infiltration time, average infiltration, and other variables needed to solve for the requested parameters.

PLANNING AND DESIGN OF SURFACE IRRIGATION SYSTEMS

Example: Given the following information,

Intake family, IF = 0.3
Furrow length, L = 275m
Furrow slope, s = 0.004 m/m
Roughness coefficient, n = 0.04
Net irrigation depth, in = 75mm
Inflow rate, Q = 0.6 l/s
Crop : Maize
Spacing, W : 0.75m
Compute
A. the desired time to cut–off, Tco ,
B. the equivalent depths of surface run off and deep percolation, dro, ddp,
C. the distribution pattern efficiency.
Soln:

A. Design cut-off time , Tco

Tco = Tt + Tn = 144 + 999 = 1143 min. (19.05hr)
A. Gross application depth , Ig

Substituting for all the variables

 The average infiltration opportunity time over distance x down the furrow

To-L = 1143 – 47.6 = 1095.4 app = 1095min.

C. - Average infiltration , iavg

 79.82  80mm

 Hence the average infiltration depth along the furrow is 80mm

D. Surface runoff depth , dro

dro = ig – iavg = 200mm – 80mm = 120mm
 Hence the amount of water lost from the furrow is 120mm

E. Deep percolation depth , ddp

ddp = iavg – in = 80mm-75mm = 5mm of water drained below crop root zone

F. Distribution pattern efficiency , ed,

i 75mm
ed = n * 100 = * 100%  37.5%
ig 200mm
