Mixtures: Types and Separation Techniques

This daily lesson plan is for a class on mixtures. The objectives are to identify different types of mixtures and separation techniques. The lesson will introduce mixtures as substances made of two or more physically mixed substances that can be separated. It will discuss homogeneous mixtures that have consistent composition throughout and heterogeneous mixtures that vary in composition. The main types of mixtures are suspensions with large visible particles, solutions with tiny invisible particles, and colloids with medium-sized particles. Students will identify types of mixtures and practice separation techniques.

Topic Mixtures

Objectives  Identify and differentiate between different types of mixture

 Identify different separation techniques and what mixtures would be used

Previous 

Summary of  Mixture- Any substance made when 2 or more substances are mixed
Content physically (but not combined chemically). This means that at some point it
can be separated into its original components.
 There are 2 ways to classify different types of mixtures. Whether or not
the mixture has the composition/consistency throughout. Homogenous
mixtures have the same composition (e.g. milk, mayonnaise, salt-water)
while Heterogeneous mixtures vary (different consistency/composition)
throughout the mixture (e.g. muddy water, soup, milk and sugar)
 There are 3 main types of mixtures. They can be identified by the particle
size in the mixture.
 Suspension- a heterogeneous mixture with large particles. The particles
are large enough to see and also to settle or be filtered out.
 Solution- a homogeneous mixture with tiny particles. The particles are too
small to see, settle or filtered out. E.g. salt water, sugar water
 Colloid- a homogeneous mixture with medium-sized particles. The
particles are large enough to see but not large enough to settle or be
filtered out. E.g. mayonnaise, gelatin, whipped cream
