Mixtures: Types and Separation Techniques
Mixtures: Types and Separation Techniques
Topic Mixtures
Summary of Mixture- Any substance made when 2 or more substances are mixed
Content physically (but not combined chemically). This means that at some point it
can be separated into its original components.
There are 2 ways to classify different types of mixtures. Whether or not
the mixture has the composition/consistency throughout. Homogenous
mixtures have the same composition (e.g. milk, mayonnaise, salt-water)
while Heterogeneous mixtures vary (different consistency/composition)
throughout the mixture (e.g. muddy water, soup, milk and sugar)
There are 3 main types of mixtures. They can be identified by the particle
size in the mixture.
Suspension- a heterogeneous mixture with large particles. The particles
are large enough to see and also to settle or be filtered out.
Solution- a homogeneous mixture with tiny particles. The particles are too
small to see, settle or filtered out. E.g. salt water, sugar water
Colloid- a homogeneous mixture with medium-sized particles. The
particles are large enough to see but not large enough to settle or be
filtered out. E.g. mayonnaise, gelatin, whipped cream
