2. Limitations
2.1. Folding schemes require the fold sheet is foldable.
To be able to automate our Apogee Impose workflow we need to know how a fold sheet is folded and how it
is assembled. If we would allow ‘non foldable fold sheets’ there will be issues with
Placing of mark sets (referenced to the spine, lowest folio, etc.)
Calculating automatic shingling (also depending on the paper thickness)
Provide a correct Split For Proof (following the Main imposition and collate/output by main fold
sheet)
If the fold sheet is not foldable, it is probably caused by our other limitations (Cut & Stack, Pseudo Multiple
Sections, etc..) If it doesn’t belong to one of the other limitations below, please provide them to Agfa HQ
([email protected]).
2.2. Multi-product (APR-57547)
The Apogee Prepress system is based on single jobs. It is possible to combine fold sheets of different jobs on a
single press sheet but you need to create the imposition and place the pages very carefully to make sure that
after printing and finishing there is no mixture of the jobs.
Solution in Apogee Prepress:
(See also: Multiple Impositions on a Press Sheet on ApogeeNetwork)
Create a bound stacked product with 32 page A4 and create a part with ‘Plain’ as part type and name
it Job1..
Change the runlist Indexes to 1-16
Create a second part with ‘Plain’ as part type and name it Job2.
Change the runlist Indexes to 17-32 and enable ‘Number pages independently’
In the Product View, first split the assembly in four 8-pages fold sheets (you can use shortcut
Alt+Ctrl to split in equal parts).
Select all fold sheets (Ctrl+A) and select Folding Scheme F8-7 in the Inspector (Ctrl+I).
TechNote - Company confidential HQ - Mortsel

Combine the jobs on one press sheet
Note: To see the independent page numbering per job, disable ‘Runlist Indexes’ in the View menu
In the Pages tab carefully place the 16 pages of job 1 in the first part, then 16 pages of job 2 in the
second part.
For ‘nested’ jobs create the same ‘stacked job’ but rearrange your assembly as follows. The result will
be fine.
Limitation:
(see 5.17 Automatic Shingling in mixed assembly (APR-59224, APR-58010, APR-63450))

2.3. CAD/CAM import and nesting (APR-51771)
Apgoee Impose has implemented a Step & Repeat functionality only for repeating rectangular shapes. Click
the Step&Repeat button, select a fold sheet (Bound) or single pages (Unbound) and drag the corner/side of a
selected item in order to step it along the height/width of the press sheet.
More complex Step & Repeat to avoid paper waste (nesting) is currently not supported and therefore we
don’t allow CAD/CAM import.
2.4. Macintosh support
The Apogee Impose Editor will not be implemented on the Macintosh Client. Therefore editing jobs that are
using Apogee impose is also limited on the Macintosh Client.
We advise you to use the Windows Client once you have decided to use Apogee Impose in your production
environment. The Windows Client on your Macintosh can be accessed through virtual machine software
such as VMware Fusion, Parallels (see TN Apogee Prepress 7.0.0 - Client virtualization on Apple Mac OS X)
Other solutions are not tested and therefore not supported.

2.5. Imposition proofing/Digital Printing (APR-50971)
Apogee Impose isn’t supported if there are two Impose TP’s in one production plan and both Impose TP have
different settings.
Following message will be created when you try to setup such production plan:
What is supported?
an imposition proof from a main flow (dual flow with 1 Impose TP in the main flow)
Apogee Imposition to a Digital Press (single flow with 1 Impose TP)
Some signature to a conventional Press, others to a Digital Press (dual flow with 1 Impose TP. E.g.
the ‘Cover’ to a Digital Press’, the ‘Body’ to a conventional Press.)
a Split for Proof flow (dual flow with 2 Impose TP’s and one set to ‘<from main>as 1 up’ or ‘<from
main>as 2 up’)
an imposition proof from a main flow with second impose TP and the same settings (dual flow with
2 Impose TP’s and one set to ‘<from main>’)
2.6. Different separations of one press sheet to different presses
All separations of one press sheet needs to be printed on the same press and with the same production set
(parameter set). This limitation is the same for all other imposition modes.
E.g it is not possible to print Cyan and Magenta to the Large Press and Yellow and Black to the Small Press.
HQ - Mortsel TechNote - Company confidential
APOGEE IMPOSE– APOGEE PREPRESS 10.0 OR LATER 7 of 49
2.7. Page bottling (APR-57864)
Currently Apogee Impose has an automatic solution for shingling. This solution calculates the shingling
depending on the assembly, the paper thickness, the folding scheme,… and can be executed by page offset or
page scaling. Currently no other adjustments can be applied to compensate with page rotation or skewing.
2.8. Fold outs (APR-60643)
Apogee Impose doesn’t have a good solution in bound work for parts with an odd number of pages because
the assembly is based on a multiple of 4 pages and a foldable folding scheme (see 3.1 Folding schemes
require the fold sheet is foldable). This assembly is a very important part for automation and therefore fold
outs are not supported.
2.9. DQS workflow
Marks Layers (APR-12538)
In a DQS workflow, the pages are always placed on top of all marks and the marks order could not be
defined. This has always been a limitation for all imposition modes. With Apogee Impose you can now define
the mark order with the layers but the pages are always placed on top of all marks in a DQS workflow.
Shingling and Glue Zones with ‘scaling’ method (APR-61348)
Scaling of pages is not supported in a DQS workflow. Therefore, Shingling and Glue Zones with the ‘scaling’
method is not supported. You can only use the ‘shift’ method with the DQS workflow.
Page text marks (APR-50366)
Apogee Impose page text mark variables $page.document_base_name, $page.document_filename,
$page.document_name are not correctly replaced in DQS jobs.
Knockout around pen (APR-50694)
The ‘Knockout around pen’ in the Pens resource doesn’t work in DQS jobs.

2.10. Marks only supported in the Apogee Prepress Border
Output Devicemark
These Output Device marks (DeviceMark.pdf, WebGrowthProfile.pdf) will be resolved by the Output Device
(Proofers Image/PlateSetters) instead of the Render. The DeviceMark.pdf includes the variables $DEVICE,
$PRINTDATE and $PRINTTIME, the WebGrowthProfile.pdf includes $WEBGROWTHPROFILE.
This marks are especially useful when Load Balancing Output Devices or last minute changes because the
variables will be resolved at imaging. Therefore you can only use these marks in the Apogee Prepress border
and they will not be visible in the Raster Preview.
Variables
This list of variable text marks are only supported in the Apogee Prepress border:
$BOOKSIGNATURE
$DEVICEGROUP
$DOCPAGETRIMBOX
$DOCUMENTEXTENSION
$DOCUMENTLIST
$DOCUMENTPATH
$DOCUMENTREV
$FORMAT
$HOTFOLDERROOT
$IMPSIGNATURENAME
$IMPTEMPLATENAME
$MEDIANAME (supported in Layout Editor: $sheet.media.name)
$MEDIATYPE
$MEDIATHICKNESS
$PAPERGRADE
$PAPERTYPE
$PRESSPROFILE
$RULINGMAP
$SCREEN
$WEBGROWTHPROFILE
2.11. Hot ticket (Auto select from…)/Digital Printing (APR-53560)
Apogee Impose is supported in a Hot ticket when the number of pages is defined and doesn’t change. This is
the same behavior as manual selection of a Preps Template, a JDFLayout file or a PJTF file.
Apogee Impose doesn’t support an equivalent of the mode with ‘Auto Select From: Preps template’
2.12. ‘Nice to know’ limitations
The Press Sheet Size is limited to 5080 x 5080 mm
Marks with a size 0 x 0 mm (or inch) are not supported with Apogee Prepress. This limitation is the
same for all other imposition modes.

3. Preps Solutions/Workarounds
3.1. Cut & Stack (APR-70546)
Cut & Stack impositions don’t have any folding and therefore you can’t create folding schemes for this kind of
binding.
Solution in Apogee Impose:
Create a stacked product with e.g. 16 page A4
In the Product View, first split the assembly in 2-pages fold sheets (you can use shortcut Alt+Ctrl to
split in equal parts)
Select all fold sheets (Ctrl+A) and select Folding Scheme F2-1 in the Inspector (Ctrl+I).
Then you need to recombine the fold sheets that page 1 and 9 are placed on the press sheet 1, page 3
and 11 on press sheet 2, etc..
Note: You can save this job as a ‘Ticket Template’ or ‘job ticket file (.ajt)’ for reoccurring jobs.
TechNote - Company confidential HQ - Mortsel
10 of 49 APOGEE IMPOSE – APOGEE PREPRESS 10.0 OR LATER
3.2. Pseudo Multiple Sections
In Preps Pro you can use the option Multiple Section (previously called Multiple Delivery) to place 2 or more
‘fold sheets’ on one ‘press sheet’.
In Preps Plus you could imitate such Multiple Sections by using a specific page arrangement.
These kind of imitated signatures give problems when using Split For Proof. You can’t create such Folding
Schemes in Apogee Impose with above ‘Page arrangement’ because they are not foldable and you need to cut
them first before folding.
Solution in Apogee Impose:
Create a Folding Scheme for each ‘Section’ (F8-7)
Combine the folding sheets on one press sheet in the Product View.

3.3. Marks support compared with Preps
Press sheet side guides
Press sheet side guides are drawn (like line marks, rectangle marks,…) by Preps within the Preps templates.
If you didn’t want them on the output you need to disable them on the Preps template. With Apogee Impose
you need to place these marks as a file mark which is installed by default in the ‘Marks’ resource.
Punch mark and side center marks
With Preps these marks are painted by Apogee Prepress. If you don’t want them on the output you need to
disable them in the ‘Imposition configuration’ settings in Apogee Prepress. With Apogee Impose you need to
create these marks as a file mark yourself.
Variable PostScript marks from Preps
Collation marks:
sigcolla.eps, sigcollb.eps, sigcollc.eps, sigcolld.eps, sigcolle.eps, sigcollza.eps, sigcollzb.eps,
sigcollzc.eps, sigcollzd.eps, sigcollze.eps
Following screenshot shows how you need to imitate the Preps Collation Marks in Apogee Impose:
o Use the characters a,b,c,d,e, to choose the signature number orientation.
o If the mark contains z, select one of the zigzag patterns otherwise select one of the other
patterns.
o If the step value in Preps is negative, select the ‘top to bottom’ pattern. If it is a positive
value, select the ‘bottom to top’ pattern.
sigcolla-ABC.eps, sigcollb-ABC.eps, sigcolld-ABC.eps, sigcolle-ABC.eps
o Roman characters are not supported because this is mainly used for Multi Web templates.
sigcolla-JA.eps, sigcollb- JA.eps, sigcolld- JA.eps, sigcolle- JA.eps
o Select the ‘Japanese’ Script in the collation mark.
sigcolla-zh.eps, sigcollb- zh.eps, sigcolld- zh.eps, sigcolle- zh.eps
o Select the ‘Chinese’ Script in the collation mark.
Barcode marks:
MM-bar128c.eps, WST-bar2of5.eps, WST-bar2of5w-text.eps
TechNote - Company confidential HQ - Mortsel
12 of 49 APOGEE IMPOSE – APOGEE PREPRESS 10.0 OR LATER
For these marks you need to order a Agfa Barcode Mark option (EYJW1 - AP BARCODE LINK) and then you
can use the Agfa Barcode marks which are installed by default with Apogee Prepress in the ‘Marks’ resource.
Other:
barcode.eps
o not supported
Device-Resolution-Text.eps
o Use text mark variable $output.resolution in Apogee Impose ($RESOLUTION in the border)
Digital-Exposure-Test.eps
o Use one of the Agfa DigiControl wedges (installed by default in the ‘Marks’ resource)
In-Rip-Color-ID.eps, In-Rip-Color-ID-90.eps, In-Rip-Color-ID-180.eps, In-Rip-Color-ID-270.eps
o Use ‘separationnames_H.eps’ or ‘separationnames_V.eps’ (installed by default in the ‘Marks’
resource)
o Use text mark variable $output.separation in Apogee Impose ($SEPARATION in the border)
Agfa Custom marks
The Agfa Custom marks (AVW26 – AP CUSTOM MARK) are only supported with Preps imposition, they are
not supported in Apogee Impose.

APOGEE IMPOSE– APOGEE PREPRESS 10.0 OR LATER 13 of 49
3.4. Page Index 0
In Preps it is possible to create templates with page index ‘0’. This page would be ignored during imposition
but there was a placeholder defined. There are different reasons for this setup and we probably don’t know
all of them, but we can already provide some workarounds for some of them. If you have templates that can’t
be solved by these workarounds, please provide them to Agfa HQ (
[email protected]) together with
a clear explanation why you use them.
Press sheet containing 2 or more fold sheets with different amount of pages
Example:
When you want a press sheet with 2 fold sheets (F8-x and F4-x = 12 pages) you could create in Preps a press
sheet with 16 pages (F16-x) and disable 4 of them by changing the page index to 0.
Solution in Apogee Impose:
You can create such imposition by drag and drop multiple Fold Sheets on one press sheet as follows:
TechNote - Company confidential HQ - Mortsel
14 of 49 APOGEE IMPOSE – APOGEE PREPRESS 10.0 OR LATER
Fold sheet with considerable paper waste
Example:
If you want to print a 12 pages on a press sheet that can fit 16 pages and you don’t care about the paper
waste, you could create a simple folding scheme with blank pages in Preps using page index 0.
Step 1: first fold upwards (now you look at the back) Step 2: second fold downwards (now you look at
the blank pages.
Step 3: trim the Head & Face Margin and take out the Step 4: final fold downwards
blank pages (now you look at the lowest & highest page)
Workaround:
Manually fold this fold sheet again but don’t take out the blank pages.
Renumber the book signature from 1 to 16 and then create a F16-x folding Scheme for Apogee
Impose
Use this folding scheme and select in the Results tab, the pages that need to be blank. Choose in the
context menu, Placeholder Make Blank.
Now you can run your document through the runlist, ignoring the ‘Blank pages’.

Mimic single sided press sheets in Bound jobs
Example:
It is possible to create an imposition where all pages on the back have page index 0 to mimic a single side
press sheet in a bound product.
Solution in Apogee Impose:
Create a bound job with a double amount of pages than needed. E.g. 8 pages needed, create a 16-
pages job.
Select Folding Scheme F16-x.
Select ‘Single Sided’ for ‘Workstyle’ in the Product View.
Note: Ignore snag list warning "The workstyle of the press sheet is set to single-sided, but the sheet contains
content on both sides. Only the front side will be printed".
In the Pages tab make sure that you only place pages on the placeholders that are assigned to a press
sheet.
In the Pages tab make all the placeholders blank that are not assigned to a press sheet. In this way
the job will finish correctly.

Create ½, ¼ or ¾ imposition on a press sheet for web printing (APR-63468)
Example:
If you want to create an imposition on the half, one quarter or three quarter of a press sheet (web) you need
to create an imposition with 16 pages and make some pages blank in Preps by using page index 0.
Solution in Apogee Impose:
In Apogee Impose we can handle these partial webs in Web Production Schemes.
Create a Web Production Scheme with the correct amount of columns
On the Press Sheet position this partial web with the Press Sheet Layout Rules

3.5. Independent pages
In Preps it is possible to create templates with independent pages. You can use only independent pages or
combine these independent pages together with an imposition in Preps. There are different reasons for this
setup and we probably don’t know all of them, but we can already provide some workarounds for some of
them. If you have templates that can’t be solved by these workarounds, please provide them to Agfa HQ
(
[email protected]) together with an clear explanation why you use them.
Different page sizes on one press sheet
You can create different page sizes on a press sheet, mostly used for Flatwork jobs.
Example:
A job with 3 different page sizes.
Solution in Apogee Impose:
You can create such imposition by creating an Unbound job with 3 parts. Each part has a different
‘Page Size’ which you can change in the ‘Part Editor/Inspector’ or in the ‘Page Inspector’
TechNote - Company confidential HQ - Mortsel
18 of 49 APOGEE IMPOSE – APOGEE PREPRESS 10.0 OR LATER
Step and Repeat
To be able to place multiple instances of one or more pages on a press sheet, you need to use independent
pages in Preps.
Example:
A Step & Repeat job.
Solution in Apogee Impose:
In Apogee Impose we can handle these with the Step & Repeat implementation.
Click the Step & Repeat button.
Place the first element on the press sheet and Step and repeat it 6 times in height
Place the second element on the press sheet and repeat it 7 times in height and 2 times in width.
Place the first element again on the press sheet but now vertically and repeat it 2 times.
Fill the open area with the first element (again) and the third element and set the ‘Press sheet layout
rules’ correctly and this is your final result.
HQ - Mortsel TechNote - Company confidential
APOGEE IMPOSE– APOGEE PREPRESS 10.0 OR LATER 19 of 49
3.6. Repeat pages on one side only
Sometimes you want to repeat pages on one side only and on the other side you want to place other pages.
This can be used when the front page of a product is always the same but the back has different information.
Example:
Page 1 is repeated on the front and page 2-5 is placed 2 times on the back
Solution in Apogee Impose:
In Apogee Impose we can handle these kind of impositions with Pagination Schemes
Create following Pagination scheme
Create an ‘Unbound Folded double-sided’ product
Add one part and select the newly created pagination scheme
Place this element twice on the press sheet
(see also: Creating Pagination Schemes in Apogee Impose to produce post cards with common fronts on

4. How does it work
4.1. Folding Sequence
The sheet travelling direction is always leftwards or downwards
½, ¼ , ¾ , etc. are always relative to ORIGINAL sheet length and width.
Fold up means: the leading part will be folded upwards on top of the trailing part.
Fold down means, the leading part will be folded downwards underneath the trailing part.
The plus-sign will change the sheet travelling direction of the sheet (from leftwards to downwards
or from downwards to leftwards)
The first fold (f1) is always perpendicular to the sheet travelling direction. In Apogee Prepress 7.1 you could
create/import folding schemes with the first fold parallel to the sheet travelling direction. You can’t create
such schemes anymore in Apogee Prepress 8.0 and when you import them from Apogee Prepress 7.0 the
folding sequence is empty and you can’t use them (APR-57636, APR-57563).
HQ - Mortsel TechNote - Company confidential
APOGEE IMPOSE– APOGEE PREPRESS 10.0 OR LATER 21 of 49
4.2. Head to Head, Foot to Foot
The "Default page arrangement" (Head to head / Foot to foot) is based on the folded result (this might be
different as the unfolded fold sheet).
After applying the folding sequence, Page 1 will be with the head at the closed-head side or in other words,
the jog edge. (jogging is the lay that is used in the binding to align the different book signatures. Because the
lowest page is with the head to the jog edge, it is Head to Head. When the lowest page would be with the foot
to the jog edge, it would be Foot to Foot.

22 of 49 APOGEE IMPOSE – APOGEE PREPRESS 10.0 OR LATER
4.3. Repeat and Position Options (APR-51730)
There are many settings for positioning and repeating marks. These settings are one by one perfectly
explainable but when you start combining these settings you can get unexpected results. To make sure you
don’t end up in this situation when placing a repeating mark, we provide you a guideline how to position this
mark depending on the ‘Stepping Direction’.
With ‘Stepping Direction: Left to Right’, you need to use one of the ‘left Mark Anchor points’ and
position it to the ‘Left Edge’.

4.4. Clipping Options
There are many settings for clipping marks, certainly when you have a repeating colorbar. We will explain
them one by one. To verify the clipping of a mark, you need to enable ‘Hidden Marks’ in the ‘View Options
Palette’. The clipped parts of a mark are shown in this mode and are red shaded.
Clip at cell boundaries
Apogee Impose can detect colorbars in the ‘Marks’ resource. If you place a filemark that has been detected as
colorbar, the option ‘Clip at cell’ is available in the ‘Attributes’ tab. If you enable it Apogee Impose will clip the
colorbar always at a cell. If the option’ Clip at cell’ is disabled and the used file mark is a colorbar, you need to
provide it to Agfa HQ (
[email protected]).
Available space/Fixed length/Fixed Number of steps
Choose ‘Fit within available space’ to clip when the repeating reaches the Clip Mark target (defined in the
Position tab) if clipping in this pane is enabled of course.
If you choose ‘Fit within fixed length’, Apogee Impose will calculate the number of steps needed to fit this
length and doesn’t clip at all. Except if it reaches the Clip Mark target (defined in the Position tab and
clipping enabled of course) sooner
E.g. Step Area length of 1000 mm, mark is 220 mm, equals in 4 steps. Clip Mark target is Press sheet which is
1020 mm and Horizontally clipped. The will be repeated 4 times and no clipping is done.
E.g. Step Area length of 2000 mm, mark is 220 mm, equals in 9 steps. Clip Mark target is Press sheet which is
1020 mm and Horizontally clipped. The repeating will be clipped to 1020 mm.
If you choose ‘Fixed’, Apogee Impose will clip when the repeating reaches this value. Except if it reaches the
Clip Mark target (defined in the Position tab and clipping enabled of course) sooner
E.g. Fixed number of steps is 4 steps, mark is 220 mm, equals in 880 mm. Clip Mark target is Press sheet
which is 1020 mm and Horizontally clipped. The will be repeated 4 times and no clipping is done.
E.g. Fixed number of steps is 9 steps, mark is 220 mm, equals in 1980 mm. Clip Mark target is Press sheet
which is 1020 mm and Horizontally clipped. The repeating will be clipped to 1020 mm.

24 of 49 APOGEE IMPOSE – APOGEE PREPRESS 10.0 OR LATER
Note that for ‘Fit within fixed length’ and ‘Fixed’ number of steps:
- For stepping direction ‘centered’ you need an odd number of steps so we will add one if the entered
number of steps is even.
- For stepping direction ‘inside-out’ you need an even number of steps so we will add one if the
entered number of steps is odd.
Partial last step Draw clipped/Omit
With ‘Draw clipped’, Apogee Impose will draw the last step and depending on the other clipping options it
will be drawn clipped or not clipped. With ‘Omit’, Apogee Impose will omit all steps that would be clipped
depending on the other clipping options.
Note that
- ‘Omit’ with ‘Fit within fixed length’ will omit the steps when the number of steps calculated exceeds
the length value
- ‘Draw Clipped’ and ‘Omit’ with ‘Fixed’ number of steps has no sense if the number of steps are
smaller than the Clip Mark target. In this case no steps will be clipped/omitted.
Clip Mark target
In this part, you can define if you want to clip to the ‘Position Target’ (also defined in the Position tab) or to
another target. You can disable the clipping or you can use positive or negative values to respectively enlarge
or decrease the clipping target.
4.5. Extend Knockout and Conflicts
The ‘Extend’ values in the Attributes of a mark are only applied when ‘Knock out file bounding box’ is
enabled.
If you enable ‘Include knock-out for conflicts checking’ in the Conflicts of a mark the Knockout (and the
‘Extend’ are taken into account when they are enabled in the Attributes.
It is not possible to use another ‘Extend’ value for conflict checking than the one you use for knockout.

4.6. Mark Sets Inspector
A Mark Set can have a ‘grayed-out check mark/filled selection’ when:
You have selected multiple items and the Mark Set is not applied on all of them. (e.g. select all press
sheets in the Product View and it is possible that some press sheet contain other Mark Sets.
Some marks of a Mark Set are not placed. (e.g. you can delete a mark of a Mark Set manually)
You add a mark to a Mark Set from within the Press Sheet View. (e.g. you need to ‘Reapply All Mark
Sets’ to get the ‘black check mark’ again)
The button ‘Remove Manual Marks’ is enabled when:
A manual mark is placed for the selected items
The message Reset/Keep states will be shown when:
A Mark Set with condition ‘Always’ is manually disabled
A Mark Set with condition ‘Manual’ is manually enabled
A Mark Set with a specific condition is placed automatically and manually disabled again
A Mark Set with a specific condition is not placed automatically and manually enabled
Reset states will disable all Mark Sets and revaluate all the conditions.
Keep states will only reevaluate the conditions of the Mark Sets for which the state was not changed
manually.
Note: Once you changed a state in the Mark Inspection you can undo the state manually but the state is still
‘manually changed’. You will still get the message for Reset/Keep states and Keep states will not
revaluate this Mark Set.
4.7. Mirror on Back
Apogee Impose (and Apogee Prepress Border) have two options: ‘mirror content on back’ and ‘mirror
position on back’.
Preps has only one option: ‘mirror on back’. This option only mirrors the content on the back. Preps will
always ‘mirror position on back’.
Therefore, if you want the same behavior as Preps, you need to enable the option ‘Mirror position on back’ in
Apogee Impose for all marks.
4.8. Dynamic reprocess
Equal to all other imposition modes, press sheets will be reprocessed automatically when the layout changes.
This means that if you change the Assembly, Folding Scheme, Workstyle, Press Sheet Size, Position of marks,
etc. the affected press sheets will dynamically reprocess.
When you replace a file mark, change attributes of marks or change other settings that don’t influence the
position of the mark, no dynamic reprocess is executed. You need to reprocess the affected press sheets
manually.

4.9. Variables
Because there are many items you can address in Apogee Impose, we have a large list of possible variables.
We divided the list in base variables and used a ‘dot’ notation to point to several sub items.
You can find the list from the ‘Help’ menu in the Apogee Prepress Client. Choose ‘Variables’ and then ‘Mark
Engraver Variables’. In this list you can find following information:
Page, FoldSheet, PressSheet are the categories for Apogee Impose where the variables can be used
as ‘Condition (C)’or as ‘Textmark (T)’.
Image, Sheet are the categories for the Layout Editor where the variables can be used as ‘Condition
(C)’or as ‘Textmark (T)’.
The Sheet View (Apogee Impose = ‘Press Sheet View’, Layout Editor = ‘Sheet View’) determines if
the variables are resolved correctly (V) or replaced with the corresponding Generic Variable (X) in
the specified view. Note that in the variables will always be resolved correctly on the output.
Generic Variables contains the corresponding Apogee Prepress variables that can be used in Border,
File Name Template, etc.
Preps Variables contains the corresponding variables that can be used in Preps templates
4.10. Auto Impose rule: ‘Largest fold sheet’ (APR-51963, APR-75940)
In Apogee Prepress 7.0, Auto Impose for bound jobs always applied all the placement rules and then used the
largest fold possible sheet to fit the press sheet. In this way you could end up with small fold sheets while a
larger fold sheet would fit as well.
Example:
Duplicate the 'Default Set' in the Folding Schemes resource, give it a new name and disable F16-13
and F16-14 for 'Use' with Auto Impose.
Create an Auto Impose Rule with all rules to ‘Prefer’ and make sure that ‘Largest fold sheet’ is at the
bottom of the list.
Create a new Apogee Impose job, 'Bound Stacked Matt coated A4', 20 pages, Press Sheet Layout Rule

In Auto Impose, select 'Large Press', Press Sheet 1000 x 650 mm, select your new created Folding

times on a second press sheet. This result is correct because the Largest fold sheet that honors the
'Align lays' and 'Lowest folio on Back' is F8-7.
If you would prefer an F16-x to be placed in this case you can move 'Prefer Largest fold sheet' to the
top of the top of the list.
If you apply Auto Impose again, you can see that an F16-6 is selected and in this case the 'Largest

4.11. Auto Impose rule: ‘Maximize page count’
Apogee Impose will try to fit the largest folding scheme as possible. Sometimes you want Apogee Impose to
use smaller folding schemes from the folding scheme set if this would result in more pages on the Press
sheet. In this way you can maximize the press economy.
With the Auto Impose rule ‘Maximize page count’ you could choose for this approach. You need to define the
maximum number of extra guillotine cuts you want in order to make sure the cutting cost will not exceed the
costs you gain by maximizing the press economy.
Example:
Duplicate the 'Default Set' in the Folding Schemes resource, give it a new name and disable all
folding schemes for 'Use' with Auto Impose except F16-6 and F8-7.
Create an Auto Impose Rule with 'Prefer Largest fold sheet' and all other rules set to ‘do not
consider'.
Create a new Apogee Impose job, 'Bound Stacked Matt coated A4', 32 pages, Press Sheet Layout Rule
to 'Center Bottom’.
In Auto Impose, select 'Large Press', Press Sheet 1330 x 700 mm, select your new created Folding
Scheme Set and your new created Auto Impose Rule.
Apogee Impose will try to fit the largest folding scheme as possible on the press sheet as many times
as possible. If the F16-6 fits on the Press sheet it will be placed. It doesn't matter if the placement of
F8-7 would result in more pages on the press sheet.
Change the Auto Impose Rule and set ‘Maximize page count’ to ‘Prefer, choose to have maximum 2
guillotine cuts extra and move this rule to the top of the list.

APOGEE IMPOSE– APOGEE PREPRESS 10.0 OR LATER 29 of 49
Apogee Impose will now try first to fit smaller folding schemes as many times as possible. The F8-7
fits tree times on the press sheet and results in 2 guillotine cuts. The F16-6 fits one time on the Press
sheet with no guillotine cut, so Auto Impose will use the F8-7 because there are more pages placed
on the press sheet and there are only 2 extra guillotine cuts needed
In Auto Impose, change Press Sheet to 1330 x 1300 mm and impose again
Apogee Impose will now try first to fit smaller folding schemes as many times as possible. The F8-7
fits five times on the press sheet but this results in 5 guillotine cuts. The F16-6 fits two times on the
Press sheet, Auto Impose will place the F16-6 two times because the F8-7 requires 4 extra guillotine
cuts and these costs would exceed the costs you gain by maximizing the press economy.
4.12. Placing covers and single-row fold sheets (APR-56583, APR-57269)
Apogee Impose arranges by default all fold sheets with their lays to the leading edge of the press sheet and
with Work&Turn and Work&Tumble to the center of the sheet. The result is that they appear to have another
page arrangement as that of the Binding Options. With the option ‘Single-row schemes: Arrange according to
Page Arrangement’ you can now arrange the fold sheets to the selected page arrangement in the Binding
Options.
Example:
A job with a ‘Foot to Foot’ page arrangement in the Binding Options gives following results:
By default: Enable ‘Arrange according to Page Arrangement’:
TechNote - Company confidential HQ - Mortsel
30 of 49 APOGEE IMPOSE – APOGEE PREPRESS 10.0 OR LATER
4.13. Special covers and Auto Impose Rules (APR-59801)
A special cover is a fixed fold sheet with page 1 on the top in a head to head page arrangement. Therefore
Auto Impose sometimes can’t place a special cover if all the rules are set to ‘Must be met’ e.g. "lowest folio"
rule and the "align lays" rule are met and press lay at the right (operator side).
In this case Auto Impose will set all rules (in the background) to ‘Prefer’, so you will get the best possible
result.)
4.14. Do not place elements into the press sheets’ margins (APR-75969)
If you create a Press Sheet Layout Rule and define the Press Sheet Margins it is possible that Auto Impose
places the fold sheets or elements in this margin because it uses the full press sheet area (diminished with the
gripper).
HQ - Mortsel TechNote - Company confidential
APOGEE IMPOSE– APOGEE PREPRESS 10.0 OR LATER 31 of 49
In Apogee Prepress 7.1 you could enable following option in the Auto Fit rules to limit the press sheet size
with the margins for the calculation of the layout BUT the position settings in the Press Sheet Layout Rule
could still place the fold sheets or elements inside the margins.
In Apogee Prepress 8.0 you need to choose ‘Limit by press sheet margins’ in the Press Sheet Layout Rule and
then also the position settings will be applied to the margins instead of the edges. In this case the fold sheet
or elements will not be placed in the margins anymore.
Note: Although you can select ‘Limit by press sheet margins’ and ‘Fit to sheet edges’ the margins will always
be ignored in this combination. There is no possibility to fit within the press sheet margins yet (APR-63890).
4.15. Auto Fit Algorithm (APR-56524)
The Auto Fit Algorithm is based on 2 steps. In the first step the ‘Sheet Layout’ settings of the Auto Fit Rules
are applied on all the elements and a set of combinations will be created, also referred to as ‘candidates’. In a
second step, these candidates will be rearranged to fit them on a single-sheet or multi-sheet imposition for
the chosen ‘Strategy’.
Example:
Step1:
It is obvious that these ‘Sheet Layout’ settings in the Auto Fit Rules …
TechNote - Company confidential HQ - Mortsel
32 of 49 APOGEE IMPOSE – APOGEE PREPRESS 10.0 OR LATER
…give less candidates than these ‘Sheet Layout’ settings.
Step2:
First Auto Fit tries to fit the candidates on a single-sheet imposition. If none of the candidates fit, Auto Fit will
fit them on a multi-sheet imposition.
By default Auto Fit searches 60 seconds to fit each candidate on a single-sheet imposition. Depending on the
performance of the hardware where the Apogee Prepress Client is running and depending on the amount of
elements, sizes, copy counts, etc. it could be possible that Auto Fit can find a single-sheet imposition if you
would increase the ‘search time’.
When you set this time to long, it is possible that you waste a lot of time when there is no single-sheet
imposition solution possible for some of your jobs.
You can find the best balance during production and by experience.

4.16. Creating Web Production Schemes
Page Assignment in Multi Web
When you create a multi web production scheme and you use the Page Number tool to click the page cells in
order, the proposed page number is sometimes not the one that you expect. In this case the expected page
number is on the bottom.
If you press the SHIFT-key you can switch the proposed page numbers from top to bottom.
Number Up binding (APR-60280)
Number Up is a production method where the delivery contains two or more book signatures in one bindery
signature. These book signatures are positioned head to foot (2-up, 3-up, etc) or head to head/foot to foot
(Come And Go) in one bindery signature which is assembled first and then cut. After cutting you will have
two or more identical copies of the product.

With Web Production you can also choose to cut first and then assembled the book signatures. This
production method could reduce your costs by combining similar book signatures together. This method is
currently not possible when you create Folding Schemes for sheet fed (APR-53671).
In Web Production Schemes you need to create an extra delivery for each book signature.
A single delivery in 1-up needs to be created as 2 deliveries when you want to create a 2-up (Come & Go):

Pins (APR-58665)
The Pins are a physical device that punctures the gathered ribbons just before the cut-offs.
In this way the pins transport the cut off sheets through the folder (similar to the grippers in sheet fed

Cut-off offset (APR-74498)
The press sheet height always corresponds with the circumference of the plate cylinder. The leading and
trailing edge of the plate are mounted on the cylinder. This plate-clamp area (light green on screenshot) can’t
be used for printing. To enlarge press economy, some customers want to use a minimum trim margin, a
minimum Cut Margin for Number Up binding and the largest possible page size. In that case the pages could
run into the plate-clamp area.
In that case customers can move the plate-clamp area to another gutter where there is more available space
and where no printing is required, e.g. the Cut Margin for a Number Up Binding. In order to move the
imposition on the sheet to get the correct gutter at the leading/trailing edge, you have to define the amount
of rows that the ‘Cut-off’ needs to be offset in the Web Production Scheme.

Limitations:
- When you offset a cut-off, make sure that this cut-off never cuts through a ‘Double-Truck’ page.

4.17. Automatic Shingling in mixed assembly (APR-59224, APR-58010, APR-63450)
The automatic shingling calculation in Apogee Impose always takes the whole product for calculating the
shingling that has to be applied. This calculation is based on 2 steps. First Apogee Impose calculates the
theoretical creep for each fold sheet separately taking into account how many pages from other fold sheets
are nested. Then the highest creep is used as a reference to apply the shingling rule on all the other fold
sheets.
Example:
An Apogee Impose job with 80 pages divided in 2 parts (36 and 44 pages) which contain 2 products. (see
3.2. Multi-product)
Step 1:
In the stacked assembly BS1 has 32 pages nested and BS4 has 40 pages nested. Because there can only be
one reference, the book signature with the highest creep (BS4) will be used.
Step 2:
With the shingling rule ‘Shift inwards’ the outside pages of BS4 will have no shingling, but for all other pages
(also from BS1) we apply shingling to align all the pages within the whole product.
For this reason you have to choose ‘Manual Shingling’ when you combine different products in a single job

'Insert' part is intended to only be used as an insert into a 'Plain' part.
Workaround: change the part type from 'Insert' to 'Plain'.
4.19. Multiple versions on one Press Sheet (APR-47392)
You can setup multiple versions on one Press Sheet. This feature is dependent on the imposition because you
have to create multiple fold sheets on one press sheet or use multiple deliveries in web production schemes
in order to assign different version to one press sheet. The assignment of these versions to the fold
sheets/deliveries need to be executed in the Sheet Version Setup which is accessible from the Versioning
Task Processor. More information about this assignment can be found in ‘Training Module Prepress 10.0 –

Limitations:
The variables ‘$press_sheet.runlength’ and '$RUNLENGTH' are resolved into the correct runlength
from the Sheet Version Setup but they don’t take the plate reuse from the Plate Setup into account.
the variables ‘$output.version....’ and ‘$VERSION…’ are resolved in a comma separated list when
there are multiple versions on one press sheet.
o The Agfa Barcode could give an error because some barcode types have limitations on
length, spaces and commas.
o The Split For Proof output, which contains only a single product versions, these variables

Impose will always try to create at least 2 steps for each zone
Limitations:
The version collation mark is visible in the Press Sheet view but gives wrong indication. You
need to render the job to see the correct version collation mark.
4.24. Tips and Tricks
Don’t minimize the Apogee Impose window.
Apogee Impose is a sub-window from the JTE but it is still one entity. When you open Apogee
Impose, first the JTE opens and then Apogee Impose but in the Windows Taskbar you only see one
‘Editor’ item. When you minimize Apogee Impose, you minimize the sub-window and you can see
the JTE but you can’t change anything. The sub-window is now located as a grey box in the left
bottom corner of your screen. To open it again click on the right side of this box (shown with the ‘red
area’ on the screenshot) to maximize it again.
If you want to reprocess a job with Apogee Imposition because you have updated the marks/mark
sets, use following shortcut combination:
Ctrl + Shift + Enter, Ctrl + Shift + M, Ctrl +Shift + G
It is possible to copy a mark in the Press Sheet View. To copy, start dragging and then push the Ctrl
key. A ‘+’ sign appears and then you can drag the copy mark to any location that you want.
It is possible to remove a single instances of a multiple instance marks e.g. crop marks, fold makrs,
repeat colorbars. You have to use the Single-instance Selection tool (Alt + D) in the Press Sheet
View to select the single instances. With the Delete key you can remove the selection and keep the
other instances.
This tool can only be used for marks and it is not possible to change the settings (Attributes,
Position, Conflicts…) of a single instance.
If you have a low screen resolution (beamer connected, remote connection, old screens) it is possible
that some windows of Apogee Impose don’t fit the screen. In most cases it is the ‘Mark Engraver’ that
has this problem and you can’t click the Unlock button in this case. Note that in this case you can use
Ctrl + L to unlock the resources.
When some or all the marks in the press sheet view have no thumbnails anymore, this could be an
indication that the ImpositionService has crashed. A restart of your server should solve the issue. If a
restart doesn’t help or if this problem occurs a lot, please contact your local Service organization.

5. Serviceability
Keep your system more or less clean
A job dump from Apogee Prepress contains many resources for Apogee Impose that are present on the
customers system (Mark Sets, Pens, Layers, Binding Options, ….). This makes it easy to reproduce a
particular customer case but on the other hand, it will pollute your own system. You will notice that after a
few imports of customer job dumps your system will be soiled with many resources. To keep your system
more or less clean.
Backup your clean system with ‘Configuration Manager’ (enable all options)
Click the ‘Delete Imposition Resources’ button and acknowledge the warning message.
Import the jobdump and reproduce the customer case
In ‘Configuration Manager’, click the ‘Delete Imposition Resources’ button again and acknowledge
the warning message.
Import your own system back-up again with ‘Configuration Manager’ (enable all options)
Disable all Marks
If you want to reproduce an issue and you want to remove all the marks, you can choose ‘Switch off Mark
Sets’ in the ‘Cog wheel’ of the ‘Mark Sets Inspector’.
Escalate issues to Global Service
If you need to escalate the issue to Global Service it is always better simplify the job dumps in front. It is a
proven fact that simplified job dumps will increase the turnaround through our organization.
remove superfluous flows, use generic devices, use the default settings as much as possible
create a new job dump in Apogee Prepress 8.0 or later (only the used Apogee Impose Resources
are now included)
Default resources
Apogee Impose is a ‘resource’ based imposition. By default several Apogee Impose Resources are installed
but it is possible that you have removed them by accident or that you need some extra resources to start
from. Perhaps you can find them in:

Save Web Production Scheme that isn’t valid
When a customer wants to create a Web Production Scheme that isn’t valid, you can save it as an xml file
from the cog wheel in the Web Production Scheme Editor. You can provide this xml to Global Service for
further investigation.
