• A toolkit is available for full-integration of additional propagation models, automatic planning tools,
add-ins, macros and automations.
• A hardware protection key, programmed with specific modules, has to be used to make Atoll work.
This one may be plugged either on a parallel or USB port.
• Hardware protection keys can be of two types :
Single user keys : one dongle on each workstation,
Multi-user keys : one dongle on a licence server using a token system. Each workstation
working on Atoll (even on several sessions) takes one token (restricted to two processors per

Notes
•Atoll uses the EIRP and the DL total gain values to calculate the signal level received from the
repeater; the UL total gain value is considered in service areas studies (effective service area or UL
Eb/Nt service area for UMTS/cdmaOne/CDMA2000 networks).
•Default EIRP takes into account donor transmitter EIRP, either propagation losses between the
donor transmitter and the off-air repeater, or the link losses between the donor transmitter and the
microwave link repeater, or the optical fibre losses between the donor transmitter and the optical
fibre repeater, donor part characteristics (donor antenna gain, reception feeder losses), amplification
gain and coverage part characteristics (coverage antenna gain and transmission feeder losses).
•The DL total gain takes into account either propagation losses between the donor transmitter and
the off-air repeater, or the link losses between the donor transmitter and the microwave link
repeater, or the optical fibre losses between the donor transmitter and the optical fibre repeater,
donor part characteristics (donor antenna gain, reception feeder losses), amplification gain and

•The UL total gain takes into account either propagation losses between the donor transmitter and

repeater, or the optical fibre losses between the donor transmitter and the optical fibre repeater,

* Note
Variations of signal levels occur because of obstacles along the transmitter-receiver path. To model
this correctly, each pixel along this path should be taken into account, one by one and a sharp
analysis of each single potential loss should be made. In Atoll, this effect is modelled using the
receiver location only. On this location, the clutter type is known. For each clutter class, a specific
standard deviation on the results is defined. Using statistic laws and the standard deviation of the
clutter on which is located the receiver, it is possible to calculate a probability of error on the result
given by the propagation model (assuming the model is correctly calibrated and gives the average
result of the real one).

Atoll provides some advanced features in order to make computations more efficient :
• Propagation calculations can be distributed on other PCs (calculation servers). The list of available
servers is user definable (Distributed calculation command in the Tools menu), but can also be
defined by an administrator through an atoll.ini file. In order to benefit from this feature, the distributed
computation application must be installed of on each PC to be used as a server (option to check
during standard installation). Each computer involved in the process (workstation + servers)
consumes a licence.

• It is possible to make clones of an existing prediction by using the Clone command of the study
context menu. A clone of any coverage prediction not only keeps the same coverage and display
settings as the original, but also copies the calculated coverage prediction, which can be directly
displayed on the map.
• Atoll is capable of comparing the coverage plots resulting from two different prediction studies and

* Notes
• Path loss results are not stored in a linked database.
• The command “Force calculation” (available in the Tools menu and in the context menu of the
Predictions folder, Ctrl+F7 shortcut, icon in the toolbar) can be used to run calculations of coverage
predictions. In this case, Atoll calculates prediction studies from scratch : first of all, it deletes all the
path loss matrices even if they are existing and valid, it recalculates them and finally it computes the
unlocked prediction studies. Use this feature if you change geographic data.
• It is possible to calculate only path loss matrices (by selecting the commands Calculations and
Calculate path loss matrices in the context menus of the Transmitters folder, of a transmitter or of any
group of transmitters).

* Note
Another tool (available by selecting the Subcells and Audit… commands in the Transmitters folder
context menu) enables you to check consistency of subcell and TRX parameters duplicated at the
transmitter level. It is recommended to use it after an automatic or manual allocation. For each
transmitter, atoll checks that:
• The number of TRXs indicated in the Transmitters table corresponds to the number of TRXs listed
for the transmitter in the TRXs table,
• The list of channels used by the transmitter consists of all the channels assigned to TRXs of the
transmitter,
• The BCCH of the transmitter corresponds to the channel assigned to BCCH TRX of the transmitter,
• The number of required TRXs indicated in the Transmitters table equals the sum of required TRXs of
the transmitter subcells,
• The transmitter hopping mode is the one of its TCH subcell.
You may display in the events viewer the list of problems grouped by transmitters and solve the
detected problems. Atoll updates the transmitter parameters inconsistent with their subcells and
TRXs.

Note
It is possible to know the probability to have a given quality indicator (BER, BLER, FER,…) per pixel.
This kind of study is not directly available in the list of standard studies proposed by Atoll. In order to
calculate it, you have to proceed in three steps:
- The quality indicator you want to study and the used quality measure must be correctly indicated in
the Quality Indicators table (To open this table, select Quality indicators in the Services folder context
menu).
- The quality graph giving the correspondence between the measured quality and the quality indicator
must be defined (the graph can be defined in the receiver equipment properties).
- Finally, depending on the quality measure selected for the quality indicator, select either the Pilot
reception analysis (Ec/Io) option, or the Service area (Eb/Nt) downlink option, or the Service area
(Eb/Nt) uplink option from the study types window. Then, choose suitable settings in the Simulation
(service, mobility type) and Display (BER, BLER, FER,…) tabs.

requires an already computed “Coverage by transmitter” (with a colour display per transmitter)
displayed on the map. Selected cell and its neighbours have highlighted coverage cell contours. The
selected cell is horizontally hatched, its neighbours vertically hatched.
• If a coverage by transmitter is displayed on the map, neighbours may be selected by clicking the cells.
• Information to be displayed (symmetric, outwards, inwards links, studied carrier) can be configured in

• In Atoll, a cluster is a group of scrambling codes as defined in 3GPP specifications (64
clusters 0-63 containing 8 codes).
• You can carry out scrambling code allocation either globally on all the transmitters or on a group of
transmitters or on a single transmitter. Finally, you can select the carrier(s) on which you want to run the
allocation.
• Atoll can take into account inter-technology neighbour relations as constraints to allocate different
scrambling codes to UMTS neighbours of a GSM transmitter. To consider inter-technology neighbour
relations, you must make the Transmitters folder of the GSM.atl document accessible in the UMTS.atl
document.
• Scrambling code allocation parameters can be saved in an external user configuration file (.cfg)

• Standard display features available at the transmitter and prediction study levels may be used in
order to know the distribution of scrambling codes on the map. In addition, grouping features of
transmitters are available; they enable you to regroup in explorer the transmitters which cells have the
same scrambling code. Therefore, It is possible:
- To give a colour to transmitters depending on the assigned scrambling codes,
- To display the assigned scrambling codes in labels or tip balloons,
- To colour the service area of transmitters depending on the assigned scrambling
codes,
- To group transmitters by scrambling code.
• A study called “Scrambling Code Interference Zones” may be calculated in order to view the areas
covered by cells with the same scrambling code.
• A Scrambling code audit listing statistics and uncompliant assignments is available.
