• A menu bar,
• A tool bar,
• A status bar
• Some windows

Among the different windows, there are two main ones : the Workspace and the Explorer. Other
windows may be displayed : Panoramic, Legend, Point Analysis, Measurements, Event Viewer

Maps can be either embedded into the document or not. In that case, the path to this file is saved.

• Saving link :
- Limits the ATL file size,
- Permits file sharing on data server,
- Is compulsory for distributed path loss calculation.

• Embedding the map into the project is useful for :

- Data access speed,
- Make portable projects.

Geo data can be afterwards embedded into the .atl files.

Notes
• File drag and drop functionality is available.
• It is possible to regroup some maps (vector data, scanned maps) in a same folder for an easier and
global management of visibility and folder position in explorer.
• Specific PlaNET import functionality is available for any type of data.
• Using MNU files allows you the optimisation of traffic/clutter class raster map import and the
automatic loading of the class names.
• In order to create a new kind of map (e.g. revenue density map), use the Advanced button available

Received signal

AT261_SLGF_
AT261_SLGF_E1
E1 89

* Note
Variations of signal levels occur because of obstacles along the transmitter-receiver path. To model
this correctly, each pixel along this path should be taken into account, one by one and a sharp
analysis of each single potential loss should be made. In Atoll, this effect is modelled using the
receiver location only. On this location, the clutter type is known. For each clutter class, a specific
standard deviation on the results is defined. Using statistic laws and the standard deviation of the
clutter on which is located the receiver, it is possible to calculate a probability of error on the result
given by the propagation model (assuming the model is correctly calibrated and gives the average
result of the real one).

Atoll provides some advanced features in order to make computations more efficient :

• Atoll fully supports dual-processor and quad-processor hardwares for :

- Propagation calculations
- Simulations (UMTS)
- Prediction studies
No specific condition is required to use this feature.

• Propagation calculations can be distributed on other PCs (calculation servers). The list of available
servers is user definable (Distributed calculation command in the Tools menu), but can also be
defined by an administrator through an atoll.ini file. In order to benefit from this feature, the distributed
computation application must be installed of on each PC to be used as a server (option to check
during standard installation). Each computer involved in the process (workstation + servers)
consumes a licence.

• Path loss results are not stored in a linked database.
• The command “Force calculation” (available in the Tools menu and in the context menu of the
Predictions folder, Ctrl+F7 shortcut, icon in the toolbar) can be used to run calculations of coverage
predictions. In this case, Atoll calculates prediction studies from scratch : first of all, it deletes all the
path loss matrices even if they are existing and valid, it recalculates them and finally it computes the
unlocked prediction studies. Use this feature if you change geographic data.
• It is possible to calculate only path loss matrices (by selecting the commands Calculations and

* Note
Another tool (available by selecting the Subcells and Audit… commands in the Transmitters folder
context menu) enables you to check consistency of subcell and TRX parameters duplicated at the
transmitter level. It is recommended to use it after an automatic or manual allocation. For each
transmitter, atoll checks that:
• The number of TRXs indicated in the Transmitters table corresponds to the number of TRXs listed
for the transmitter in the TRXs table,
• The list of channels used by the transmitter consists of all the channels assigned to TRXs of the
transmitter,
• The BCCH of the transmitter corresponds to the channel assigned to BCCH TRX of the transmitter,
• The number of required TRXs indicated in the Transmitters table equals the sum of required TRXs of
the transmitter subcells,
• The transmitter hopping mode is the one of its TCH subcell.

You may display in the events viewer the list of problems grouped by transmitters and solve the
detected problems. Atoll updates the transmitter parameters inconsistent with their subcells and
TRXs.

Q The scheduler chooses the data that will be transmitted in the next
next TTI
– It sorts the users to be served

Q Different scheduling techniques

– Max CQI: resource is allocated to the UE with the best radio
propagation conditions
– Round Robin: every user is served in a sequential way
– Proportional fair: resource is allocated to the UE with the highest
instantaneous relative channel quality

Note
It is possible to know the probability to have a given quality indicator (BER, BLER, FER,…) per pixel.
This kind of study is not directly available in the list of standard studies proposed by Atoll. In order to
calculate it, you have to proceed in three steps:
- The quality indicator you want to study and the used quality measure must be correctly indicated in
the Quality Indicators table (To open this table, select Quality indicators in the Services folder context
menu).
- The quality graph giving the correspondence between the measured quality and the quality indicator
must be defined (the graph can be defined in the receiver equipment properties).
- Finally, depending on the quality measure selected for the quality indicator, select either the Pilot
reception analysis (Ec/Io) option, or the Service area (Eb/Nt) downlink option, or the Service area
(Eb/Nt) uplink option from the study types window. Then, choose suitable settings in the Simulation
(service, mobility type) and Display (BER, BLER, FER,…) tabs.

• You can import or export the display configuration of the current measurement path
• The Fast Display check box forces the use of the lightest symbol (very useful for a large amount of
points)
• The paths can be globally managed at the folder level in order, for example, to display all of them, with
the same colour scheme.

* Notes
• The parameter “maximum number of neighbours” set in the automatic allocation dialog is a default
value. Atoll uses it only if no value is defined at the cell level.
• You can carry out neighbour allocation globally on all the transmitters or only on a group of
transmitters. In this case, Atoll will consider all the transmitters contained in the group of transmitters,
the symmetric neighbours of these transmitters and all the other ones, which have an intersection area
with the transmitters of the group.
• The automatic neighbour allocation parameters can be saved in an external .cfg user configuration file.
