BRIEF INTRODUCTION

In the United States, both the U.S. customary measurement system and the metric
system are used, especially in medical, scientific, and technical fields. In most other
countries, the metric system is the primary system of measurement.
There are two main system of measurement in the world: The Metric (or decimal)
system and the US standard system. In each system, there are different units for measuring
things like volume and mass.

SYSTEM OF MEASUREMENT

The English system of measurement is most commonly used in the United States
(but, ironically, not in England). Although you’re probably familiar with most of the English
units of measurement, in the following list, you can see the most important ones. The list
also shows some equivalent values that can help you do conversions from one type of unit
to another.

• Inch
• Yard
• Miles

The Metric system uses units such as meter, liter, and gram to measure length, liquid
volume, and mass, just as the U.S. customary system uses feet, quarts, and ounces to
measure these. The metric system is based on 10s, and different measures for length
include kilometer, meter, decimeter, centimeter, and millimeter. Notice that the word “meter”
is part of all these units.
THE INCH GRADUATION
• Millimeter
• Centimeter
• Decimeter
• Meter

Note: each line is equivalent to 1 graduation.

The ruler is composed of 16 graduation. You can get the reading my looking at each
graduation and getting the numerator and denominator. To simply it you just do Greatest
common factor (GCF)

For example: 2 = Find the GCF = 1

16 8

How to read the inch graduation:

1. First graduation is 1/16
2. Second graduation is 18
3. Third graduation is 3/16
4. Fourth graduation is 1/4, then follow the given scale above

The Centimeter Graduation

1. First graduation is .5 mm
2. Second graduation is 1mm
3. Third graduation is 1.5mm
4. Fourth graduation is 12 mm

REMEMBER

Measurement is perhaps one of the most fundamental concepts in science. Without

the ability to measure, it would be difficult for scientists to conduct experiments or form
theories.
A system of measurement refers to a collection of defined units of measurement that
closely relate to each other. These units can be classified into basic units and compound
units. An example of basic units is distance, in which its unit is the meter (m). While
compound units consist of a mix of basic units. An example is speed, which is composed of
units of distance and time, giving meters per second (m/s).

LESSON 2 : PARTS OF MULTITESTER

EXPECTATION
After reading this MODULE, STUDENT(S) MUST be able to:

• Familiarized with the parts of multitester.

• List down the function of each parts.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

A multimeter or a multitester, also known as a VOM (volt-ohm- milliammeter), is an

electronic measuring instrument that combines several measurement functions in one unit. A
typical multimeter can measure voltage, current, and resistance. Analog multimeters use
a microammeter with a moving pointer to display readings.

MULTITESTER

Multitester are those that have a moving needle that stops on a number that is
printed on the background behind the moving needle. The number that the needle stops on
indicates the volts, ohms or amps the meter is measuring depending on how the control
knob is set. Analog multimeters are cheaper than digital multimeters but not as robust or
simple to use.

POINTER

The needle-shape rod that moves over the scale of a meter. It is mechanically
connected to the moving coil. It indicates the measured values on the multimeter.

RANGE SELECTOR KNOB

(selector switch) makes it possible to select different function and range of the meter.

SCALE

It is a series of marking used for reading the value of quantity. Scale can have different
types of scale, for voltage and current readings the scales have mostly linear which
mean equal division for resistance.

TEST PROBE

Positive (red) negative (black) is used to connect the circuit to the electrical components
being tested.

ZERO-OHM ADJUSTMENT KNOB

is used to zero-in the pointer before measuring resistance.

ADJUSTMENT SCREW

makes it possible to adjust the pointer to the zero position of the scale.

REMEMBER
Electrical technicians and engineers have a wide variety of tools available.
Some of these are complex, often expensive tools for measuring one specific quantity, and if
used properly, they can return many times their cost with just one or two uses. But the
multimeter, which has existed since the beginning of electronics, is still the most widely used
instrument in the toolbox. But no matter what job they perform, there is always more you can
accomplish with them.

ACTIVITY
DIRECTIONS: Answer the questions correctly. Choose your answer in the box.

LESSON 3 : READING METER SCALE OF THE

MULTITESTER
EXPECTATION
After reading this MODULE, STUDENT(S) MUST be able to:

• Numerical computations are self-checked and corrected for accuracy.

• Accurate measurements are obtained according to job requirements.
• Perform measurement using multitester.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
A multimeter is the combination of a DC voltmeter, AC voltmeter, ammeter, and
ohmmeter. An un-amplified analog multimeter combines a meter movement, range resistors
and switches; VTVMs are amplified analog meters and contain active circuitry.
The multimeter is the quintessential tool for dealing with electrical problems in a car.
We said that there were three main electrical parameters: Voltage, current, and resistance. A
multimeter is the tool to measure these three parameters. In fact, it’s three tools in one:

1. It’s a VOLTMETER that measures voltage.

2. It’s an OHMMETER that measures resistance and continuity.
3. It’s an AMMETER that measures current.

RESISTANCE SCALE

RANGE 0-2 2-10 10-20 20-50 50-100 100-200

Range x1 0.2 0.5 1 2 5 20

Range x 100 20 50 100 200 500 2k
Range x1k 200 500 1k 2k 5k 20k

Note: Always look at the range on the table so you can get accurate measurement.

1. Pointer deflection Range setting is X10 = Reading is 4 ohms

2. Pointer deflection Range setting is X1= Reading is 6 ohms
3. Pointer deflection Range setting is X100 = Reading is 4k ohms
