In some cultures in South Africa, children and elders are close and share many
things. Older people are respected in many cultures. Many children live with their
grandparents. This means that older people and children spend a lot of time together.
Sometimes old people in the family are sick and need looking after. Sometimes
children do this.
Many grandparents look after their grandchildren while their parents are at work.
Sometimes grandmother look after other children as well as her own grandchildren.
This helps her to earn (get) money.
In some cultures in South Africa older people don’t spend much time with their
children because the grandparents live in old-age homes or retirement homes. Then,
children and friends visit them there.
