Scalability

Scalability Improvements
SMT understands how important scalability is to our clients. With each release there is continued
focus on addressing scalability issues.
KINGDOM 8.3 contains significant performance improvements in the following areas:
• Calculator operations
• Well and production data loading and updating
• Seismic display speeds
• Contour display performance
• Base map display speeds
SMT is the industry leader in providing 64-bit Windows™ applications. Optimal performance in
KINGDOM is achieved through the use of 64-bit systems running our 64-bit applications.
Maximizing the amount of RAM on these systems will have a significant positive impact on
overall KINGDOM performance.

• Basemap Displays—User defined Level of Detail options tied to scale and zoom increase
map visibility and improve performance. Additional optimizations improve display
performance significantly for operations such as:
- Posting well and production information
- Scrolling
- Deviated borehole displays
- Bubble Maps

© 2008 Seismic Micro-Technology, Incorporated 14

• Calculator Operations
- All equations in the Extended Math and Math on Two Maps calculators are significantly
faster. Tests indicate that calculations now execute 30–50 times faster than previous
versions.
- In addition, repairs have been made to the parser. Any equation is now accepted,
resolving any equation element ordering issues.
• Database Performance
- Tests on importing and updating large numbers of wells and production data in 8.3 show
improvements of 10–20 times faster over previous versions in most cases.
• Contouring Display Performance
- Has been improved for the following operations:
• Contour display
• Contour editing display/re-display
• Zoom in/out on contour maps
• Scrolling on contour maps
• Seismic Caching
- Seismic pre-fetching—Seismic data for inlines, crosslines and arblines are preloaded
based on the line skip increment for the vertical seismic window. While the user is
interpreting in the current seismic view seismic data is being preloaded in the background
for the next and previous views based on the line skip increment. This results in a rapid
response when moving to the next view regardless of project size.
- Seismic Caching—As seismic data is accessed by KINGDOM, the seismic data is
cached on the local workstation. The seismic data will be cached locally either in RAM or
on the local hard disk. The location of the cached data depends on RAM availability when
KINGDOM is opened. This is particularly beneficial in a network environment.
- The benefits of the caching options leverage the capabilities of 64 bit hardware and
operating systems. If you are running KINGDOM on a 32 bit workstation, it is
recommended that these options be disabled.
• Vertical Seismic Displays—Utilization of multi-core CPUs, optimization of I/O routines to
leverage high performance file servers, and the immediate display of only the required traces
provide significant improvements to display speeds. Crossline display speed improvements
of 300-500% are not uncommon.

Project Management

Security
KINGDOM 8.3 introduces a new Security module. The Security module allows you to control
access to projects and specific project data.
Project access is controlled by setting permissions for Windows™ users.
• You can allow a user unrestricted or partial access to a project, or deny access altogether.
• Users with partial access to a project will be restricted to the data assigned to specific
author(s) work trees.

SQL Server Express Management

The SQL Server Express Management tool has been enhanced to allow the user to easily create
portable KINGDOM projects.
You can:
• Copy the entire project to an external drive OR
• Just move the database to an external drive that contains the rest of the project files
Then
• Connect the external drive to any workstation with SQL Server Express
• Attach the project database
• Execute the project from the external drive

OpenKINGDOM

Large Project Handling

Navigation buttons for scrolling through very large lists
• When there are thousands of records, navigation buttons permit quicker loading and easier
paging through the records.
• Set Records per page—this loads only the data need for viewing on this page
- Scroll by page or scroll bar
- Shows current page
- “Go to” specific page or directly to the beginning or end
• This enhancement helps navigation performance for large Oracle and SQL Server based
inventories.

Data Quality Rules
• Quickly scan the inventory for data which is obviously incorrect.
• The QC task is automated. Set data items to specific values to “watch for”, or let the program
do it for you using “AutoCheck”
• By automating the QC, the user has a better chance of finding data which needs to be
corrected.
• For selected data items, users can set ‘rules’ for the data, which if matched, highlights the
data item in the inventory list.

Here we see the UWIs which have length less that 12 highlighted in yellow

© 2008 Seismic Micro-Technology, Incorporated 18

Setting Data Quality Rules
• Simply select the data item, set the rule or choose AutoCheck to use defaults
• Then set the highlight color to indicate when data meets the criteria
• Now let OpenKINGDOM do the QC

Here we see “AutoCheck” used for UWI

A rule which will highlight any Elevation less than 1
A rule which will highlight any End Depth > 50000
No rules for Surface Location X or Y
And rules to highlight Latitude and Longitude outside 55 and -100 deg, respectively

OpenKINGDOM – OpenSpirit Option

• The KINGDOM Data Accessor now supports the import and export of 3D Bricks and Time
Slices
- Improves interoperability with OpenSpirit tools and OpenSpirit enabled projects
- Use OpenSpirit’s 3dViewer to combine views of seismic, 3D Bricks and Time slices from
SMT with other vendors data
- No need to transfer entire seismic volumes
- Reduces duplication of seismic volumes and storage requirements

Hunt on Slices
Polygon Hunt on Seismic Slices
• Interpret and erase horizons on Time and Depth slices using a modified Polygon Hunt
methodology.
• Select a seed trace location on a Slice. The program will then display the selected trace and
neighboring traces.
• The program will snap the pick to the nearest desired event: Peak/Trough/Zero Crossing.
• Users can adjust the pick location if needed before proceeding with the hunt.
• When the hunt completes the newly interpreted horizons are displayed in a new Map View.

Ease of Use
New Picking Parameters Dialog Box
• This usability enhancement enables users to set picking parameters for all picking modes in
2d/3dPAK and VuPAK.
• The dialog box content adjusts to reflect only the settings that pertain to selected specific
mode.
• Reduces confusion, the goal is to be clear and concise.

Horizon Export with Pick Type
2 new SMT Horizon file formats support Manual and Auto Pick Information—Information
has been added to distinguish manual picks from auto picks when exporting and importing
horizon data.
The 2 new formats are:
• Line Trace Time Amplitude PickType
• Line Trace Depth Amplitude PickType

Mapping
• Flex Grid Correct to Wells—Uses Back Interpolation to automatically do a residual
correction of the grid to the data, generating an extremely accurate surface model.
• Gridding User Interface—All algorithms will use the UI form introduced in 8.2 with Flex Grid,
including animations to show the chosen parameter effects prior to execution.
• Grid Editor Smoothing—A new smoothing option allows the user to smooth an existing grid
and control the amount of smoothing interactively using the cursor.
• Standalone Grid Smoothing—Perform single or multiple pass smoothing over an entire grid
using the new smoothing technology. This provides a common and consistent grid surface
smoothing approach.
• Contour Smoothing—Improved contour smoothing maintains the consistency between the
grid and the generated smoothed contour lines. Smoothed contour lines will be more
accurate in all cases. Contour Line Approximation provides consistency with pre-8.3
smoothing.
