What I need to Know
This module is about measurement. Measurement is widely used
in business and industry, in Science and Technology, in manufacturing
and engineering and in many aspects of daily living. Prerequisites to this
topic are concepts and skills related to measurement like real numbers
and its operations. As you accomplish this module, you are expected to
understand the concepts in solving your daily life problems related to
measurement.
Learning objectives:
At the end of this learning module, learners are expected to:
1. describe the development of measurement from the primitive to the
present international system of unit.
2. determine appropriate instruments to measure length, weight/mass,
volume, time, angle and temperature.
3. identify the appropriate unit to use for different objects.
4. estimate or approximate length, weight/mass, volume, time, angle and
temperature in a given situation.
5. realize the need for measurement using standard units of measure.
Remember
To achieve the objectives of this module, do the following:
1. Take your time reading the lessons carefully.
2. Follow the directions and/or instructions in the activities
diligently.
3. Answer all the given tests and exercises with honesty.
4. You may use measuring device available and measure actual
objects if possible.

What’s New
Measurement gives a number to a particular characteristics of a
person, an object or a concept. The results of measuring are near
approximations since measurements are not always exact. Accuracy of
measurement depends on the skill of a person doing the measuring and
the precision of the instrument used in measuring. As observed from
daily activities, different quantities require different units of measure and
different measuring devices.
Read the history of Measurement.
One of the earliest tools that human beings invented was the unit
of measurement in the older times, people needed measurement to
determine how long or wide things are ; or they needed to build their
houses or make their clothes. Later, units of measurement were used in
trade and commerce. In the 3rd century BC in Egypt, people use their
body parts to determine measurements of things.
The forearm length was called a cubit. The hand span was
considered a half cubit, while the palm was considered 1/6 of a cubit.
The Egyptians came up with these three units to be more accurate in
measuring different lengths.
4
However, using these units of measurement had a disadvantage.
Not everyone had the same forearm length. Discrepancies arose when the
people started comparing their measurements to one another because
measurement of the same thing differed, depending on who was measuring it.
Because of this, these units of measurement are called non -standard units of
measurement which later on evolved into what is now the inch, foot and yard.
These are the basic units of length in the English System.
The English System of measurement was widely used until the 1800s
and the 1900s when the Metric System of measurement started to gain ground
and became the most used system of measurement worldwide. In 1875, the
General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) was tasked to define the
different measurements. By 1960, CGPM released the International System of
Units (SI) which is now being used by majority of the countries with the biggest
exception being the United States of America. Since our country used to be a
colony of the US, the Filipinos were schooled in the used of the English System
instead of the Metric System . Although the Philippines already adapted the
Metric System as its official system of measurement.
What It Is
Measurements: Quantities and Units
In this section, let us discuss some of the fundamental quantities and
their basic units.
Measure of Length
Length, a physical quantity, is a measure of distance. The basic unit of
length in the SI system is the meter (m). The ruler, meterstick, and tape
measure are often used to measure the length of an object. Here are some of the
units used.
Metric System English System
Nanometer (n) Inch
Micrometer (µ) Foot (ft)
Millimeter (mm) Yard
Centimeter (cm) miles
Decimeter (dm)
Meter (m)
Hectometer (hm)
Kilometer (km)
5
Discussion:
To measure small objects like the diameter of a microchip, use
millimeters. To measure bigger ones like the length of a book, use
centimeter or inches. To measure longer length like the length of a
classroom or roll of cloth use meters or yards. To measure longer
than these, like distance from Baguio to Abra, use kilometers or
miles.
What It Is
Measure of Mass/Weight
In daily life, it is the mass of given object which is called its weight.
Weight is often use in daily life, from commerce to food production. The
base SI unit for weight is the kilogram (kg) which is almost exactly equal
to the mass of one liter of water. For English system of measurement,
the base unit for weight is the pound (lb). Some of the more common
metric units are the gram (g) and the milligram (mg).
Discussion:
To weigh light objects like a paper clip, we use milligrams, for a
piece of mango or a chalk eraser we use grams. To weigh heavier
objects like a sack of rice or a basket of tomato ,we use kilogram and for
a load of stones, we use tons.
Measure of Volume and Capacity
Volume is the amount of space an object contains or occupies. The
volume of a container is considered to be the capacity of the container. It
is measured by the number of cubic units or the amount of fluid it can
contain and not the amount of space the container occupies. The base SI
unit for volume is the cubic meter (m3). Another commonly used metric
unit for volume of solids is the cubic centimeter (cm3), while the most
commonly used metric units for volume of fluid are the liter (L) and the
milliliter (mL). Ex. Very small volume are measured in milliliters (mL)
like liquid medicine or sachet of vinegar. Large volume are measured in
cubic meters (m3) like water in swimming pools or in big drums.
6
What It Is
Measure of an Angle
Derived from the Latin word angulus, which means corner, an angle is
defined as a figure formed when two rays share a common endpoint called he
vertex. Angles are measured in degree or radian measures. A protractor is
used to determine the measure of an angle in
degrees.

1. How to use a protractor
2. How to measure angle
3. How to draw an angle using a
protractor
Above is an image of a protractor
Measure of Time
Currently, there are two types of notation in stating time, the 12-hr
notation (standard time) or the 24-hr notation (military or astronomical time).
Standard time makes use of a.m. and p.m. to distinguish between the time
from 12midnight to 12 noon (am) and from 12 noon to 12 midnight (pm)
Below are some units used to measure time:
Seconds (s) month (mo)
Minutes (m) days
Hour (hr) years (yr)
Century decade
Measure of Temperature
The unit for temperature is in degrees Celsius named after Andres
Celsius, who devised the Celsius scale in 1742. Degree Celsius can be
transformed into degree Fahrenheit named after Gabriel Fahrenheit, a
German instrument maker.
Mathematical Concepts:
Boiling point= 100 0C or 212 0F
Freezing point= 0 0C or 32 0F
Normal room temperature= 270C
Normal body temperature = 370C
