BIBLIOGRAPHY

An alphabetical list of all materials

consulted in the preparation of the
Research Paper
Purposes of a Bibliography
• To acknowledge and give credit to sources of
words, ideas, diagrams, illustrations,
quotations borrowed, or any material
summarized or paraphrased

• To show that you are respectfully borrowing

other people’s ideas, not stealing them
Purposes of a Bibliography
• To offer additional information to your
readers who may wish to further pursue
your topic

• To give readers an opportunity to check

out your sources for accuracy
Contents of a Bibliography

• Author
• Title
• Article
• Place of publication
• Publisher
• Date of publication
• Page numbers (for articles from magazines, journals,
periodicals, newspapers, encyclopedias, etc.)
Rules in Making a Bibliography
1. Titles of books, periodicals, and
encyclopedias are underlined.

2. Titles of articles are enclosed in quotation

marks.

3. There must be period at the end of each

entry.
4. All entries must be alphabetized by the last
name of the author. If no author nor editor is
given, the first word of the title, ignoring A,
An, and The, determines the order.

5. If a book has an editor rather than an author,

ed. or eds. must be used –
Todd, William (ed.)

6. The second and following lines of each entry

should be indented five spaces for the name
of the author to stand out.
7. Each entry should be single-spaced, and a double
space between entries.

8. If you have two references by the same author,

you need not repeat the author’s name, a straight
line will be sufficient.

Randolf, Vance. Ozark Mountain Folks.

New York: The Vanguard Press Inc.,
2001.

_____ . Ozark Superstitious. New York: The

Columbia University Press, 1998.
9. If neither publication nor copyright
date is given, use n.d. (no date).

10. All sources must be arranged

alphabetically with each group.
