Science 2 Natural Resources

1) Natural resources are things produced by the environment without human interference, such as sunlight, air, water, land, plants and animals, which living things use to satisfy their needs. 2) Natural resources can be classified as either renewable or nonrenewable. Renewable resources like water, sunlight, air, trees and animals can regenerate, while nonrenewable resources like soil, rocks, minerals and fossil fuels take a very long time to form once depleted. 3) It is important to conserve and protect natural resources through practices like proper waste disposal, reducing consumption, recycling, planting trees, and saving water and electricity.

SCIENCE 2

NATURAL RESOURCES
Natural resources are things produced by the environment
without any interference from humans. These are used by living
things to satisfy their needs. Sunlight, air, water, land,
vegetables, and animals are examples of natural resources.

Draw a happy face if the situation shows good

practice of protecting the environment or a sad face

if it does not. Write your answers on a separate sheet

of paper.

1. avoid burning of garbage

2. use organic fertilizer for the plants
3. participates in tree planting activities
4. rice fields converted into residential or commercial
center
5. leave the faucet open while brushing your teeth

Study at the picture. List down the natural resources that

you can find in the picture.

• What natural resources do you think can be replaced easily?

• What natural resources do you think will take a long time

before it could be replaced?

Natural Resources
A natural resource is considered something that is already
found on the Earth and used by people for sustainability. Earth’s
natural resources include sources like light, air, water, plants,
soil, animals, minerals, and fossil fuels (Tuionetoa 2020).
Types of natural resources
Natural resources can be classified into two types:
renewable resources and nonrenewable resources.
Renewable resources
Natural resources that can be replaced easily are called
renewable resources. Water, sunlight, and air are renewable
resources because they have a continuous and abundant supply.
Many renewable resources, like animals, vegetables and
crops, can be consumed quickly but can be raised and harvested
again.
Here are some examples of renewable resources and their
uses:

• Farm animals are

raised for food such as
pigs,
cows, chicken

and the like.

Fruits and vegetables

are grown for food.
Fish are caught for food.

Wind and sunlight are used to

produce electricity through wind

mills and solar panels.

Water is used for drinking,

cooking
and cleaning.

Trees are used to build

houses and
furnitures.
Nonrenewable resources
Those resources that cannot be replaced easily are called
nonrenewable resources because they are formed over very
long periods of time. Coal, oil, natural gas, soil, rocks and
minerals are types of nonrenewable resources. A rock is a solid
material made of one or more minerals. Gold, copper, and nickel
are mined from rocks. Once they are mined, it takes a long time
for more rocks and minerals to form.
Here are some examples of nonrenewable resources and
their uses:

Soil is where we grow crops.

Gold, nickel, copper, iron,

aluminum, and other minerals
are mined from rocks. These
metals are used

to make things needed by

people.

Coal, oil and natural gas

are used to produce
electricity.

Nature provides everything we need that is why we need

to conserve and protect it.
Here are some ways to protect and conserve the natural
resources:
• Dispose garbage properly.
• Practice reduce, reuse and recycle.
• Plant trees.
• Avoid burning of garbage.
• Keep your surroundings clean.
• Save water and electricity.
