Supplementary Outcome Appendix B

1. The document provides details on preventing cross-infection in the workplace, including using single-use disposables, proper PPE, zoning techniques, and following disinfection and sterilization instructions. 2. It defines a pathogen as a microorganism that causes disease and asepsis as the absence of living pathogenic microorganisms. 3. The procedure for managing a blood spillage involves applying sodium hypochlorite or chlorine granules, wearing protective equipment, cleaning up safely, and properly disposing of contaminated waste.

SUPPLEMENTARY OUTCOME

a) Use of single-use disposables

b) Use correct PPE

c) Use zoning techniques

Use correct disinfection and sterilisation methods following manufacturer’s
d)
instructions
2. Explain the meaning of the following terms:
Pathogen is a micro-organism capable of producing (causing) a disease

Pathogen

Asepsis is the absence of all living pathogenic micro-organisms

Asepsis

3. Give details of how to manage a blood spillage in your workplace.

For blood spillages, care should be taken to observe a protocol HTM 01-05 6.74 that ensures
protection against infection. HTM 01-05 6.74 states that Sodium Hypochlorite should be made up
either freshly using Sodium hypochlorite-generating tablets or Sodium Hypochlorite solution. A
higher available chlorine concentration of 10,000 ppm (1%) is advisable, particularly for blood
contamination or bloodstained fluids. Ratio is 1:10 following manufacturer’s recommendations.

Sodium Hypochlorite or Chlorine granules can be directly applied/sprinkled on the blood spillage.
Chlorine granules must cover blood spillage completely and left for 2-3 min. and then to remove
the sodden material with disposable paper towels and clean the area with detergent and warm
water. The process should be initiated quickly and care should be taken to avoid corrosive damage
to metal fittings etc.

Protective PPE must be worn such as disposable rubber gloves and a plastic apron. A face mask is
used for protection against inhalation of powder from the disinfectant granules which may be
generated from high-risk inhalation during the cleaning process.

Care must be taken to avoid skin, eye, and mucous membrane contamination during the cleaning
and disinfection of spillages. The mucous membranes most often affect the mouth and eyes and
can cause blisters and sores in the mouth and other areas in the body.
Dental practice managers must ensure that the dental team always follows routine standard
precautions when dealing with blood and body fluids as outlined in the Standard Infection
Control Precautions.

Accidental exposure to blood/body fluids must be reported according to Sharp’s injuries

management and other blood or body fluid exposure incidents.

The steps involved in carrying out risk assessment on a hazard, whatever its nature, should always
follow the same pattern:

1. Identify the hazard: a blood spillage, a chemical, a piece of equipment, a procedure that occurs
in the workplace, etc.

2. Identify who may be harmed or who is at risk: certain staff, certain patients, visitors, everyone,
etc.

3. Identify how they may be at risk. Evaluate the risk: is there a hazard only if mishandled or
misused, is there a hazard with every use, or is there a hazard if certain precautions are not
followed?

4. Control the risk: train all staff in correct usage, improve precautions to prevent mishandling or
misuse, keep hazards away from untrained persons, install health monitoring where appropriate,
remove the risk where possible, etc.

5. Record the risk assessment findings: to prove compliance, to provide a reference for all users,
to ensure all staff are fully informed of the potential hazards in the dental workplace.

6. Review the assessment process: on a regular basis to ensure that hazardous events or injuries
do not occur.

Procedure of Managing a blood spillage involves the next actions:

 Display hazard notices.

 Remove unaffected mobile equipment from the immediate area, to ensure spillage is
easily accessible for cleaning. Be mindful of surrounding areas and other people.

 Inform all staff and patients in the immediate vicinity that a spillage has occurred.
 Ensure that you have all the equipment you need to clean up the blood spillage before
starting the cleaning procedure

Dental staff must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and protective wear
before removing the blood spillage. Also cuts, scratch should be covered with a plaster to avoid
infection.

 Deal with any spillage of blood/body fluids immediately

 Always dispose of protective clothing and contaminated waste according to Waste
Policy & Procedures. Dispose of waste including PPE in an orange waste disposal bag and
place in the designated waste storage area.
 Wash hands following effective hand washing technique methods (HTM 01-05).
 Ventilate the area.
 Notify the Registered Manager (HTM 01-05).
 Discuss how the spillage could have been prevented.

6. Tutor feedback
This section should be completed by the GDC registrant who is assessing all sections of the completed PER
and is normally based at the Training Centre. Constructive feedback will help the student to develop their
performance in the workplace.
