APPENDIX G
1. Describe the method of booking recall appointments for existing patients at your workplace:
All recall periods must follow the NICE National Institute for Health and Care Excellence
(evidence-based recommendations for health) in England) guidelines as follows:
Step one - consider the patients age; this sets the range of recall intervals (under 18 then a
recall period ranging from 3-12 months) (18 and over then a recall period ranging from 3-
24 months)
Automatically done.
Step two - consider modifying factors e.g. medical conditions, social and dental histories
and findings from clinical examinations
Step three - integrate all diagnostic and prognostic information, considering advice from
other members of the dental team where appropriate, use clinical judgement to recommend
interval to the next oral health review
Step four - discuss the recommended interval with the patient. Record agreed interval or
reason for disagreement.
Step five - at the next oral health review, consider whether the interval was appropriate.
Adjust the interval depending on the patient’s ability to maintain oral health between
reviews
Recall –
appointment booked at the time of completion of previous treatment
manual appointment book used:
2. patient medical history checked to see if there is a need to book first or last session of the
day
2. A patient requires an extraction. What would you need to consider when making the
appointment? What pre- treatment instructions could be given to the patient?
Medical history (from medical history you know problems)….Book early morning
or just after lunch - inform the patient they must eat breakfast or lunch prior to a
local anaesthetic.
Bring someone with them if they are nervous or have a history of feeling faint.
Check medical history for any previous complications - e.g. fainting, excessive
bleeding, diabetes and low blood pressure.
3. Describe the information you require from the patient prior to making an appointment for a
dental assessment:
How long since last seen a dentist
The reason for the assessment
Any concerns about seeing the dentist
Convenient dates and times
Action in case of failing to attend the appointment
Potential dental charges
6. Tutor feedback
This section should be completed by the GDC registrant who is assessing all sections of the completed PER
and is normally based at the Training Centre. Constructive feedback will help the student to develop their
performance in the workplace.
