Rewrite each sentence to eliminate any misplaced or dangling modifiers.

Ex. Misplaced Modifier

Gail nearly taught for two years.

The misplaced modifier here is “nearly”. The problem is we don’t nearly teach, so the sentence must
be corrected as follows:

Correct sentence: Gail taught for nearly two years.

1. Czarina nearly watches TV for three hours every day.

Czarina watches TV for nearly three hours every day.

2. Vincent returned the phone to the shop that didn’t work.

Vincent returned the phone that didn't work to the shop.

3. Olexsiy put the fish in the fryer, which he had caught himself.

Olexsiy put the fish which he had caught himself in the fryer.

4. The renovated Wilma’s house is beautiful.

Wilma's renovated house is beautiful.

5. Ley only speaks French, nobody else does.

Only Ley speaks French, nobody else does.

Ex: Dangling Modifier

Having studied well, the exam was easy

(In this sentence, “having studied well” is a dangling modifier. According to the sentence, it’s the exam
that studies well, which is not the case.)

Correct answer: Having studied well, Victoria found the exam easy.

1. Having finished dinner, a game of tag was started.

Having finished dinner, the kids started a game of tag.

2. Back from a day of tiring work, sitting on the couch was very comfortable.

Back from a day of tiring work, Sam found that sitting on the couch was very comfortable.

3. While taking a shower, the soap fell on the floor.

The soap fell on the floor while Vance was taking a shower.

4. After finishing homework, dinner was eaten.

After finishing homework, Henry ate dinner.

5. Hoping to win her heart, a note was written.


Hoping to win her heart, Mikheal wrote a note.
