LAB ACTIVITY NO 2 Understanding Measurements SI Units and Density ES 1

This document outlines a chemistry lab activity on measurements, SI units, and density. The activity has students use various tools to measure length, mass, and time, and record the measurements in SI units. Students then observe the densities of liquids and solids by comparing how they interact with water. They calculate densities using mass and volume measurements and rank objects from least to most dense. Finally, students answer discussion questions about the importance of standardized SI units, how density relates to mass and volume, and applications of density concepts.

LAB ACTIVITY NO. 2: Understanding Measurements, SI Units, and Density DATE:

NAME: SCORE
Part A: Measurements and SI Units

Objective: Familiarize students with the concept of measurements and the International System of Units (SI).

Materials:

1. Ruler or tape measure (with centimeters and meters)

2. Kitchen scale (with grams and kilograms)
3. Stopwatch or timer (with seconds)
4. A reference sheet of SI units (provided by the teacher)

Instructions:

 Length: Using the ruler, measure the length and width of your textbook. Record the measurements in both
centimeters and meters.
 Mass: Weigh three different objects from your surroundings using the kitchen scale. Record their masses in
grams and kilograms.
 Time: Use the stopwatch to time how long it takes for you to complete a specific task (e.g., tying your
shoe). Record the time in seconds.
 Reflection: Using the provided reference sheet, identify the SI unit for each of the measurements you took.
Discuss why having standardized units is essential.

Part B: Density of Liquids and Solids

Objective: Understand the concept of density and differentiate between the densities of various liquids and solids.

Materials:

1. Beaker or clear glass

2. Water
3. Cooking oil
4. Small solid objects (e.g., a rubber eraser, metal screw, plastic cap)
5. Kitchen scale
6. Ruler

Instructions:

 Density of Liquids:
Pour equal volumes (e.g., 100ml) of water and cooking oil into the beaker. Observe and record which liquid
stays on top.
Based on your observations, infer which liquid has a lower density.
 Density of Solids:
Take one of the small objects, measure its mass (m) using the kitchen scale, and record it.
Using the ruler, measure the dimensions of the object to calculate its volume (V). For simple shapes:
Cube: V=a3

Rectangular Prism: V=𝑙×𝑤×ℎ

 Calculate the density (D) using the formula: D= 𝑚/𝑉

 Repeat the above steps for each object.

 Reflection:
Based on your calculations, rank the objects from least dense to most dense.
Discuss why some objects float in water while others sink (relating to the density of water, which is
approximately 1g/cm3.
