PRELIMINARY ACTIVITY
Prayer
“Please all stand for the prayer. Ms. De La Cruz, “Classmates, are you ready to pray. Let us pray…”
kindly lead the prayer.”
Classroom Management
“Before you take your seat please pick up the pieces of (Students will arrange their chairs properly and pick
papers and plastics around you. And, kindly arrange up the pieces of papers and plastics.)
your chairs properly.”
Checking of Attendance

today?”
“Thank you.”
Checking of Assignment
“Did I give you an assignment?’ “None Sir”
Recall
“What was the lesson we discussed last meeting?”
Exactly, can you name one?
(The student will raise their hand)
Yes Maria?
“The topic we discussed last meeting was all about
Very good, thank you… Disaster Management Cycle…
Motivation
“ Let us have a game first. I will give you a happy and
sad emoji. Identify if the statement is a good practice
or not. Use a happy emoji if the statement is a good
practice and a sad emoji if the statement is not”
“Let us start!”
“1. Turn on electrical appliances like TV or computer
during a thunderstorm.
2. If you live in mountainous areas, pay attention to The students will respond.
signs of landslides, falling trees, sinking ground and
moving rocks, etc.
3. Help your parents/elders to reinforce your house to
make it sturdy and more resistant to strong winds and
heavy rains.
4. When an earthquake occurs, you become panicky
and try to escape by all means. You forget the basic
principles of: drop, cover and hold.
5. Do not mind news updates like weather forecasts on
TV, radio, newspapers or local “bandillo.”
6. Remind your parents to check on the electricity
supply in the house including electrical wirings, fuse,
switch and electric plugs.
7. Help your parents and neighbors clean the drainage
system and around your house before the flood season
occur.
8. Ignore warning signs like ‘No Smoking’ or ‘No
Using of Cellular Phones’ near gasoline stations.
9. Store water in unclean and uncovered buckets, jars
or containers.
10. Evacuate to higher grounds if you live in coastal or
flood-prone areas “
Introduction of the Lesson
“Our topic for today is about the Importance of
DRR.”
Presentation of Objectives
“Here are our objectives for today:
1. Discuss the key concepts,
principles, and elements of DRR
2. Recognize the importance of DRR (Students will read the objectives simultaneously.)
on one’s life.
3. Create a simple community disaster
preparedness plan to minimize
vulnerability and disaster risk in the
community.”
LESSON PROPER
Activity
“To formally start our lesson. Let’s have an activity.
Instruction:
1. I will divide you into three groups
2. The group will examine the a picture on the
screen and answer the questions that follow:
1. Is it possible for the massive
rockslide incident to be prevented?
Why? Why not?
2. What possible steps could have (The students will respond)
been taken by the people/community?
(Give at least 3)
3. The group will be given 5 minutes to prepare
for their report and 2 Minutes to report.
4. The group member must choose a leader and
reporter to deliver and discuss the given task.

Abstraction/Analysis
“What is DRR?”
“ Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) refers to systematic
efforts to minimize vulnerabilities and disaster risks,
to avoid (prevention) or to limit (mitigation and
preparedness) the effects of hazards. Mitigation
measures are designed to minimize disaster-related
losses including life, property or assets, and
environment. Examples are strengthening buildings
to avoid collapse during an earthquake and
restriction of activities in volcanic danger zones.
Like mitigation measures, preparedness measures
such as providing early warnings and identifying
evacuation routes/sites are DRR activities which are
also done before a disaster-causing event.”
“That’s Correct Analiza!”
What are the steps in DRR?”
“Steps in Disaster Risk Reduction includes:
1) Risk Identification – identifies hazards and/or
potential threats based on experience and records.
2) Risk Analysis – aims to establish the occurrence
of the event.
3) Risk Prioritization – analyzes and identifies
priority subjects (hazards, areas and elements at
risks) requiring treatment.
4) Risk Treatment – Identifies cause of the risk,
identifies and evaluates treatment strategies, and
prepares and implements treatment plans.
5) Monitoring and Evaluation - oversees the
implementation progress of the disaster risk
management process. “
“Precisely Ivan! Your amazing!”
What is the importance of DRR?” “Natural disasters kill an average of 60,000 people
per year and are responsible for 0.1% of global
deaths over the past decade. Beyond the toll on
human life, the costs of disasters were estimated at
more than US$ 2 trillion for the last two decades
(United Nations Development Program).”
“Nice Gemm, you highlighted the importance of
saving lives!”
“From development perspective, therefore, disaster
“Another importance of DRR, who can give an risk reduction is vital for building a more equitable
insights? and sustainable future. It is a key factor for
socioeconomic survival in these times that natural
disasters are becoming more frequent and worse
mostly due to the effects of climate change. Disaster
risk reduction is a proactive step towards prevention
which is believed to be better than “cure”.”
“Amazing Carlo!”
“Who can add another insights of the importance of “From a personal perspective, disaster risk reduction
DRR?” is important to prevent loss of lives and material
properties. Disaster affects those in poverty most
heavily: high death tolls tend to be centered in low-
to-middle income countries without infrastructure to
protect and respond to events. However, based from
historical data, the world has now seen a significant
reduction in disaster deaths and loss of properties
through earlier prediction, more resilient
preparedness and response systems.”
“Wow you are so great!”
Application
Why it is that DRR is important? “DRR is important to prevent the loss of lives and
material properties. Disasters can happen in any
country at any time. When disaster strikes, it can
seriously disrupt the functioning of a community and
people will depend on help from others. But a lot can
be done to prevent and reduce the effects of disasters
as well as to strengthen the response of communities
at risk.
Countries with well-developed health systems and a
well-trained, well-equipped health work force in
communities are much better prepared for disasters.
When a community is well-prepared, many lives can
be saved within the crucial first hours after an
emergency before external help arrives. In addition,
the people in the community know local risks and
can better respond to their own needs.”
EVALUATION:
Directions: Create a simple community disaster preparedness plan to guide you, your family and the
community before, during, and after occurrence of natural and/or man-made hazards. Select one from among
the different types of hazards listed below (if possible, choose the most applicable in your area). Write at least
three steps. An example is given as your guide.
A. Earthquake
B. Volcanic Eruption
C. Tsunami
D. Typhoon
E. Flashfloods
F. Storm Surge
G. Fire
H. Disease Outbreak, e.g.
Dengue
