2 CHAPTER DEVELOPING THE WHOLE PERSON Developmentally, adolescence is a time of change. The physical changes during this period are simply matters of growth and maturation yetitis only a fraction of the changes that adolescents experience. Changes inbehavior, social, emotional, spiritual and cognitive aspect are brought about by learning and interaction with the environment. They have to deal with so many changes in such a short time. Maturation, interactions and influences of family and society are important in shaping their whole being. The adolescent development does not occur ona perfect continuum. Itmay come in different stages but still the changes are the same to every adolescent on normal condition. Physical Development Physical development pertains to the maturing, of the body and its systems along with its functions. Puberty, onset of adolescence, is the process of physical changes in which a child’s body matures into an adult body capable of sexual reproduction. The body produces hormones that initiates growth, function, and transformation of the brain, bones, muscle, blood, skin, hair, breasts, and sex organs. Increase in height and weight is fast in the first half of puberty and is completed when an adult body has been developed. As to how long will this fast growth period lasts depend on many things, how tall one may become depend mostly on heredity There are also other factors that affect the progression of puberty like nutrition, illness and socioeconomic status. The physiological and psychological changes do nothappen at the same pace in all persons but the changes do happen giving each person the time to accept physical appearance, type of skin and body built. Having a lovelife and be attractive to the opposite sex matters alot among adolescents that is why they do a lot of things to enhance their Jooks and body shape. Psychological Development Psychological development begins with the experience, expression, understanding, and regulation of emotions from birth through late adolescence, Itinvolyes how growth and emotion changes as adolescents show unpredictable attitude, mood swings and frantic emotional outburst 2 whichslowly subsides as they age towards adulthood. Puberty and social ships affect the emotional development. Female Social Development Social development refers to the learned and developed ways of behaving in accordance to social expectations. Developing socially acceptable behavior is continuous across ones lifespan with particular attention to childhood and adolescence. The behaviors learned from parents, from school, from social interactions and physical disorders have strong effect in ones personality. Take for instance, a child with inborn physical defect who experienced bullying may tend to be a withdrawn person. A child who has witness violence in the home may have trouble Jearing how to play well with other children. Healthy social development allows a person to establish positive relationships with family, friends, teachers, and other people. As a person matures, he learns to handle his. own feelings and needs and to respond Pree to the feelings and needs of others as well. Generativity vs. Stagnation Adulthood 40-65 y/o Egovs. Despair Maturity 65 y/o to death Family and other people Family and other people Adults create or nurture things that will outlast them, often by having children or creating a positive change that benefits other people. Success leads to feelings of useftilness and accomplishment, while failure results in shallow involvement in the world. Older adult look back on life and feel a sense of fulfilment. Success at this stage leads to self actualization while failure results to regret, bitterness, and despair. the same people whom they see: doing bad and wrong things. Asa result, their behavior later on becomes inconsistent with some of their moral belief: For example, they may believe taking prohibited: drugs is not right, but they will try it anyway. Moving to late adolescence, they will begin todevelop their moral ideas about life and the world they live in, Parental guidance and good influence of peer group help adolescents find and keep astrong spiritual faith and to ive a life with socially accepted morals and values.
