DEVELOPING THE WHOLE PERSON
Developmentally, adolescence is a time of change. The physical
changes during this period are simply matters of growth and maturation
yetitis only a fraction of the changes that adolescents experience. Changes
inbehavior, social, emotional, spiritual and cognitive aspect are brought
about by learning and interaction with the environment. They have to
deal with so many changes in such a short time. Maturation, interactions
and influences of family and society are important in shaping their whole
being. The adolescent development does not occur ona perfect continuum.
Itmay come in different stages but still the changes are the same to every

Physical Development
Physical development pertains to the maturing, of the body and
its systems along with its functions. Puberty, onset of adolescence, is the
process of physical changes in which a child’s body matures into an adult
body capable of sexual reproduction. The body produces hormones that
initiates growth, function, and transformation of the brain, bones, muscle,
blood, skin, hair, breasts, and sex organs. Increase in height and weight
is fast in the first half of puberty and is completed when an adult body
has been developed. As to how long will this fast growth period lasts

person the time to accept physical appearance, type of skin and body

Psychological Development
Psychological development begins with the experience, expression,
understanding, and regulation of emotions from birth through late
adolescence, Itinvolyes how growth and emotion changes as adolescents

Social development refers to the learned and developed ways of
behaving in accordance to social expectations. Developing socially
acceptable behavior is continuous across ones lifespan with particular
attention to childhood and adolescence. The behaviors learned from
parents, from school, from social interactions and physical disorders have
strong effect in ones personality. Take for instance, a child with inborn
physical defect who experienced bullying may tend to be a withdrawn
person. A child who has witness violence in the home may have trouble

allows a person to establish positive relationships with family, friends,
teachers, and other people. As a person matures, he learns to handle his.
own feelings and needs and to respond Pree to the feelings and
needs of others as well.
Erik Erickson (1959) developed the 8 psychosocial stages that
