This lesson is a follow-up from the day before. Columbus Day is celebrated in the USA on the second Monday in October. It is a day in which we celebrated Christopher Columbus' trip from Spain to Hispaniola, North America in 1492. He was sent by King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella of Spain. Columbus' crew sailed on the Nia, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. Columbus was looking for a faster route to the far east (Asia) in order to trade for valuable spices. Instead, he found North America, after sailing for five weeks. The ship Santa Maria sank in Hispaniola, but the Nia and the Pinta both made it back to Spain.

EXPLAIN
1) Explain that just like there were events that happened in a certain order in Columbus life, there are events in our lives that occur in a certain order. 2) Discuss events like the daily schedule, growing up, etc. 3) Tell students that they are going to make a timeline of their life just like they did for Columbus. 4) Using a piece of paper folded into 3 sections, model for students by making your own timeline. First, draw yourself as a baby. Talk about when you were born. Write the year you were born in the first section. 5) Then draw yourself as a child and tell about something you did when you were in school. 6) Finally, draw yourself as an adult. Talk about how you grew up and became a teacher. Write the current year in the last section.

ELABORATE
1) Pass out pre-folded paper to each student and have them create their own timeline. 2) In the first section the student will draw him or herself as a baby and with the teachers help write the year they were born underneath. 3) In the middle section, the student will draw a picture of him or herself when they were a toddler or pre-schooler. The students picture should increase in size as the age of the student increases. 4) In the last section, the student will draw a picture of him or herself as a kindergartner. With the teachers help, the student will write the current year. 5) Have students share their timelines with the whole class, in a small group, or with a partner. Have them look for similarities and differences between themselves and their classmates. (11) (A) (B) (15) (C) (16) (A) (B)

EVALUATE
1) The teacher will evaluate the students knowledge of Christopher Columbus life by observing the students placing the pictures correctly on the butcher paper timeline and through discussion about the timeline. 2) The teacher will assess the students ability to create and illustrate their own timeline through their completed project and explanation of their timeline.

EXTENSIONS
1) Incorporate technology by using a PowerPoint with the lesson. This website contains several different PowerPoint presentations for Columbus. http://holidays.pppst.com/columbusday. html
