1. Introduction
The platform Netflix had produced a lot of series like “Stranger Things”, “Cobra Kai” and
others, but one of the most relevant series was “The crown”. This told the history of the British
society principal of the monarchy, divided into the fourth seasons, but this extended essay is
going to be more focused on the last one, here surged the question to what extent does the series
“The Crown” the fourth season produced by Netflix in 2020, affect the perspective of the people
about England royal family?
Furthermore, one of the reasons to select this theme was the curiosity to understand the
events that had happened in the British Royal Family, in specific a couple of Gales and all their
problems in the relationship. The methods that have been applied to recollect the information
were quantitative and qualitative methods with primary and secondary sources. The structure of
the essay is divided into chapters, and these chapters are divided into sub-chapters that make
easier the reading. In addition, this extended essay was made in a description-analytic form, the
reason for this is that historical events must be described, then analyzed to have a better
understanding.
2. 2. Theory Frame: About the series: ARE THERE MORE THAN ONE?
This series was produced by Netflix in this is founded the history of all the monarchy
except the new events that are the marriage of the sons of Diana and other things more
because the producers and directors don´t NO CONTRACTIONS have the necessary and
substantial information that is needed, in the first season we can found the coronation of
the queen Isabel II and the creation of the senate, in the second season is the fight of the
queen with the new generations and she explore the change that has the world, in the third
season are in the decade of sixty and seventy when the royal family is fighting to maintain
the traditions that characterize there and the fourth season is in the decade of eighty with
the first minister Margaret Thatcher and the beginning of a couple of Gales.
PUNCTUATIONThe British society in 19 and the acceptance of the crown
All begins with queen Isabel II when the British society meet their new queen that
was her, she took the crown in the year 1952 the six of February, and when she takes to
produce a change in all the British society because was the first queen that has contact with
the persons that makes that the person love this new methodology and the coronation of the
queen have approximated one hundred million of the person views by the television,
making a change this would be new begin for the crown obviously this was the product of
the influence of her husband. PUNCTUATION.....REFERENCES ARE NEEDED!!
The sixth of February of 1952 was an important date for British society because Elizabeth II rise
to the power. Her approach changed the perspective of the England society because she
authorized the transmission of the coronation by television (this proposal was suggested by
Prince Felipe)1. In consequence of this act, the country accepts the queen with new eyes,
1

supporting her to make things that any monarchy in history has realized. That day people dressed
formally, used hats (traditions that maintain), and feel that they were important persons. After all,
they were observing an event that they only can imagine, considering those ceremonies were
exclusive to the upper class.
With this, the United Kingdom had a new queen, which makes the country looks fresh
and remote from the traditional customer that they have been accustomed to. When the queen
was twenty-five years2 she received the name of “Queen with a fairy tale” and at the same time,
she gets married to Prince Felipe3. She had the big wish to change a lot of things in her country
that she believes were wrong.
Her ascent to the crown made a lot of political modifications, the most significant change
was the parliament of the seven- countries when the United Kingdom had power over Australia,
New Zealand, South Africa, and Celian. In the social part, she removes the “invisibility of the
crown”4 to the citizenship, at the same time added tittles of “head Commonwealth”5. In her word,
she defines that the country must pass this metamorphosis because the traditional customs did
not work with the modern society. This decision made the public opinion change and feel more
comfortable and increased the acceptance of the crown.
But the approval of the crown stayed lower for a while, this was a consequence of the
crisis, which made the citizenship ask if the crown was making the things in a good form or only
maintaining the appearances. The most important events that make the country thing like that
were: the crisis in the channel of Suez in 19566 was produced by a decision of the prime minister

Anthony Eden wherein benefit of other person and not for the country, this was the beginning of
criticism in the monarchy. The wrong choices made the crown renounce some colonies7, the
things were incurables in the country and at the same time with the politicians.
Then two more crises appeared in Australia and Canada that put in approval the monarch,
but the crown passed the test successfully. Besides the feeling of republican in the colonies
increased, making the tolerance of the nation break, Australia8 their citizenship dismissal the first
minister of the crown who was Gough Whitlam9. Some politicians asked for the intervention of
the queen, but she considered that these themes were not part of the work, in consequence of
those decisions the United Kingdom lost Australia.
The reputation of the monarchy was in a middle point, some populaces believe that some
acts of the crown were correct, and others believe the opposite. But a new episode occurs that
made the public opinion of the royal family got lower, this was the marriage of Prince Charles
and Princess Diana10. At first, the society considered this couple was like a fairy tale11 because
Diana a humble girl conjugality with a prince (something interesting to understand is that the
royal family in England only can be married to a person who had royal blood or similar).
The marriage of Princess Diana and Princes Charles was the best thing that the country
had because the acceptance increased a lot and people feel identified with Diana, for that reason
Diana was called the princess of the country. She had more acceptance in the society than the
princes Charles, this made her receive other titles like the person who had more photos in the
world without being a celebrity.

The year of horror made all collapse, produced in the middle of the night when the critic
and the opposition made speculation about the fortune that has the queen in full economic crisis,
the monarchy denies all this. But the damage was done, the persons disappointed the situation of
the country, people had no work, and the lifestyle of the population was getting worse every day
and at the same time more expensive.
Another thing that beat stronger the reputation of the royal family was the rumors of
extramarital affairs in a couple of princess Diana and princes Charles12, the most sound was the
lover of princes Charles, named Camilla Parker Bowles. He had a relationship in the seventies
with her, but they cannot marry because she was catholic, with the blessing of the queen they
were able to marry13 in 2005.
All the dramas that made Princes Charles in one year must be paid with queen Isabel’s
reputation; in that period all her popularity gets down. She defines the year 1992 as “annus
horribilis”14 in a speech that she was making to celebrate the 40 anniversaries of her arrival to the
throne.
3. Analysis of the main characters of the series
These four characters have been selected in this chapter to analyze the portrayal aspect that they
showed to the world principal of the British society, where is important to have into
consideration some dominant aspects that have been taken. The objective of this is to contrast the
success presented in the period drama “The Crown” and the official royal biography.

(Mackelden, 2020)
13
(Booth, 2022)

(The Royal Family, 1992)
3.1 Princess Diana
In the case of Princess Diana is important to analyze two types of portrayal that can be observed
in the period drama as a mother and like a princess.
The media and the population knew her as Lady Di, she appeared in the fourth season of
the series “The Crown”, in that season she was one of the main characters, represented like a
woman that has a lot of ambitions in her life.
Princess Diana has been known as a woman that has a lot of charisma, kind, and other
factors, making that she had the title of “The people princess” because was the second time that
the country can observe a new concept of the Royal family related with the contemporary
society. Diana makes a lot of modify in the social part but the most significant was that she
changes the perspective of the country about the crown, making the communication more
effective. Something important too is that she helped princess Margaret adapt to the new world.
At the same time, she made some changes in the royal family, the most significant change
was that she fixed the relationship with the media, the reason for this was that the monarchy has
an important rule called PR, this consists in “never complain, never explain” and “always deny
everything”. This rule Diana has always broken because she explains the events that were
happening in the royal family or important success, this can be observed in the real-life at the
same time in the period drama when she talks about the experience that she had when she visited
Australia.
Something important to know is that in the period drama can be observed some
exaggerations, one of this is when princess Charles present to the royal family Diana. In this
scene can appreciate that the royal family accepts Diana faster, in the series she was represented
as a victim, and this can be founded in a reference to when she had a good eye for hunting a deer
and the destiny that she selected. In the real-life event, she helped with the hunting, but she never
makes a game of words regarding that, she only was talking about how happy she was to be in
that place.
Following Princess Diana, as a mother in real-life some testimony that has been
recollected, say that she was a lovely mother, she always was worried by her children. She
wanted that they could live a normal like eating a burger at McDonald's or Burger King, things
that child does. Diana emphasizes that the kids learn about charity because this is a form to
understand the people at the same time to help them.
This facet of Diana in the period drama was represented in a bad way cause in the tour of
Australia in the year 1983, Diana dawn to refuse the tour if her son William do not come with
them. This never occurs, she was a lovely mother but at the same time, she has a duty to the
monarchy that produces that she respects all the activities that the royal family must do, and she
nowise represents a tantrum to stop any current activity.
3.2 Princes Charles
To analyze the character of the princes Charles is going to take the portrayal of the relationship
that he had with his parents and as a husband.
Princes Charles is one of the main characters in the period drama. He was represented like a little
boy with dreams that were frustrated in his life because an important person for him died, this
person always supported Charles in all that he wanted and needed. This event causes him feels in
love with Camilla Baker, but the Royal family never accepts his love with Camilla. First, she
was catholic, and then she had been married. This was expressed in the series “The Crown” in
the first chapters that present the fourth season.
That makes him always want the approval of his family, to have that, he pleases the wishes
of his mother and father, he dreams that her mother says that the things that he was making were
good. For that reason, Charles married Diana and she passed the test of the monarchy, but in the
other point of view he is a sacrifice only for felicitation of his mother, but I think that this
behavior is something egoist because he only counts in the moment but not in a long time, the
problems that he can cause in the life and reputation of the persons principal the most affected
was Diana and his mother the queen.
This decision destroys the people that were around him and makes the England society and
all the world hate him. He could fight to make their love function but not involucrum another
person’s because this produces chaos like happened in the real life.
Another thing that I do not agree with is that at that time Diana have been harshly judged
because she has other relationships that were not in the marriage, but Charles can be cheating
Diana with Camille. Diana must maintain trusty because is one of the responsibilities that must
have the wife and this make that the life of Diana was the same hell, because all the pinch of
happiness he destroys or goes to the queen to inform the bad behavior that has Diana, but he
never tells that he was cheating at the same time.
3.3 Camilla Cornualles
In this section is important to comment about the portrayal of Camilla Cornualles is about the
role that she developed as the lover of the princes Charles.
Camilla Cornualles had shorter interactions in the period drama because she appears in
specific episodes, but she was represented as the lover of the princes Charles and other times like
his friend. In the perspective of the ethic and respect was wrong that she cheated her husband
with a person recently married, to fix this she can recommend something to the relationship
function, but she always put in the otherwise Charles in the themes who were related with Diana,
the reason of this she was jealous of Diana luck.
One good point to highlight in the series is Camilla recommended Charles to solve the
problems with Diana because marriage must live in pace, the reason this was related that one day
they are going to exploit, but at the same time she was putting tares showing the news about
Diana and how she was loved by the public. This made her always try to stop the relationship
that was developing with Charles but was so difficult because every day Charles enamored
Camilla with simple details making her decide to become the lover of Charles and be recognized
with this name.
3.4 Queen Elizabeth
To analyze Queen Elizabeth is going to considerate some aspect of her portrayal that is like a
mother and as a queen to a nation
In the case of Queen Elizabeth, she had not a good relationship with princes Charles and
Princess Diana, she maintains the idea that the marriage was for all the life and in the case of a
couple of Gales, this factor does not function, this caused that the queen tried that all to make the
marriage function, but this never happened. Something interesting that captured the attention of
the viewer is the behavior that she had in a situation, making that most of the time she became
insensitive to the situation of Diana. Diana presents signs that she needs the help of someone to
fix her relationship but when she wanted the help of the queen, she always was busy and never
was there for her. The queen had that behavior with her family to maintain the image in the
society principal to what is the media, that they had to appear that they were the perfect family.
But was all the contrary because they had problems in health, mental and familiars of the royal
family that were hidden.
In the case of the queen, she made her work in a correct form, she always was
preoccupated with the things that were happening in the nation. To take consider is in the period
drama evidence that the queen only made actions if the media insisted about a problem or the
public opinion was not at her favor, this product that in the season can be observed that she made
impossible the life to the Prime Minister that was Margaret Thatcher when she puts a limitation
in every action that she made. Something important to consider is, the queen the end of the
month calls the politicians to give her a resume of the things and actions that they elaborate on.
4. The impact of the series on the society
In this section of the extended essay is going to analyze the impact that the series have in the
society of this series change the perspective of some characters, if this series have impact in the
place that this success where originated or in the world of general and other things more that are
going to be analyze in this part. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU MEAN
Do The period drama “The Crown” that was produced by Netflix, have an impact on British
society about the perspective of the royal family? Five graphics were elaborated by Emma
Ramos, with the function to analyze if this really happened or only the period drama impacts the
world.
So, the result was in the appendix.
First, the period drama The Crown is popularly outside of the UK. That means that people
who watch The Crown were interesting in the history of the same reactions were not related with
the events that happened in the country UK, only 17.08% of the people that were interviewed
were in the country this can be found in figure 1 of the annex, and the 82.92% have been other
parts of the world, that means that people in the country know the history and is no necessary to
revive the events that have happened in that period principal with a couple of Diana and Charles
because they history is the most recent.
Second, in the figure can be observed with the age of the people that watch the period drama
(figure two is in the annex) were the 48% of the people that view is in the age of 18-24 and 45-
64 years are the most stronger viewers that have this period drama, something interesting to
analyze because the new generations want to understand the history of the British family, and in
the other case of the people with 45-64 years, they want to strengthen the knowledge that they
have about this topic and the period drama help in this way. In this surge, another theme is that
the public that observes the period drama the majority are women with a 76,97% this can be
caused because they have believed or alike in this type of series with characters in real life.
In the third figure that can be founded about the importance of the truthful that have the
period drama, and ask directed to the people about all the events were presented in the series are
real or just a part of it including science fiction, in this 49,63% have things that the majority of
events presented and the portrait that has some characters are correct, like Lady Di ”the princess
of the country” and the other humans, believe that the series was like is the 0,49% but this cannot
happen because in sometimes exaggerate and criticize situation that never happened.
In the last figure can be found more about the opinion that has the people of the content that
have the period drama, in here is important to resalt that period drama take some things from the
history and other are invented to have more audience in this, so the 34,40% of the people that
have to take this questions say that this series remained unchanged and the perspective that has
about the royal family and only the 10.81% of the people that have been talked say that this
worse a lot the image of the royal family a number that is very little comparting the first value. In
this picture that was taken from Emma Ramos WHERE??? SOURCE ???, is seems that she is
asking if the persons that sees the series the crown in the stocking that she takes, that most
persons are from other parts of the world and only the 17% are from United Kingdom that makes
to analyze that the persons that was original projected the series they don´t saw the same, in
consequence this means that in other parts of the world liked to know about a culture of the
famous monarch that in the same country that live with this every day with this.
Figure 1
In the case of this figure, we can find the age that the series have impacted in the case of the
ages with type of ages see this series and the most persons that see this series are the young
people between the 18-24 years that means that this person are interesting in know the history
that was developed when they are child or they don´t born in the year that was made, in the case
of the other years this series don´t have a good reception because they life in the year that all
happened and they know this success so view again the series is only to remember.
Figure 2
Something interesting that is founded of the figure 3 is the ask of the persons if they think
that the series is real all the success that is present and in most people think that somethings are
real and other not because are part of drama, this make that the new generations with can
difference the information that they receive and analyzing this is so interesting because in the
Figure 3
history of humanity this normally no happened because the society all the information that
receive only is for known but they don´t think is this is right or no.
In the case of this figure is how the people receipted the princes Charles in this figure they
have remained it doesn’t have changed a lot to the persons because the modern society know-
how was the success that happened in his marriage with Diana and that produce that doesn't have
the reception that he wants to have but was about his actions in th
5. Conclusion
In conclusion in this extended essay can be observed that the period drama “The Crown” does
not have an impact on British society like was expected because the majority of people who
Figure 4
watch series were from other parts of the world, this makes that the period drama have more
impact in the world this can be related with curious about what happened in that England
country, another factor important that appear too is that the persons believe that all the
information presented have a little bit of fiction producing that they doubt about some
information that was present as a couple of Gales and other more so with the reputation of the
British royal family.
Something important to consider of the period drama was the portray that have every
character like was mentioned, all have maintained the real essential but in the case of princess
Charles, this was exaggerated with how we treat princess Diana because was rude for the
audience making the people hate more this character the consequence of this product that the
royal family has to denounce that the image of the princes Charles was the incorrect and the
events never happened in that way. Making more people in the world hate him for all previous
events presented in the series.
