IV. Procedure
Elicit The Teacher will show different pictures and let the student identify the illustration

Direction: Identify the method of heat transfer that takes place in each illustration. (Conduction,
Convection, and Radiation)

1. Boiling Water CONVECTION 2. Making toast in a toaster RADIATION

3. A spoon in a cup of hot soup CONDUCTION

Engage The teacher will let the student find a word that is being associated with the word heat.
Direction: Find a word that you think are associated with the word heat
Heat Conduction
Insulator Conductor Thermal Energy
Temperature Convection Hotness Thermometer
Radiation Radiation

Explore The teacher will let the student observe the picture and answer the given question.

Observe the picture

What do you think will happen?

The mug and the metal spoon will feel hotter

Why did this happen?

This happen because of heat transfer

Explain The teacher will explain the key concept.

Let us understand the concept of thermal energy and heat

All forms of matter are made of atoms and molecules. These atom and
molecules are always in motion and they have kinetic energy.

The energy that is moving or vibrating particles is called thermal energy

 Thermal energy refers to the energy

possessed by an object or system
due to the movement of particles
within or the system.
 When thermal energy is transformed heat is always produced.
 The energy that is transferred from the boiling coffee to the mug
and metal spoon is called heat.

Heat
 Is the flow of thermal energy
 Energy in transit
 The energy that transfers from a body within a higher temperature to a body with a lower
temperature.
 The transfer of energy is due to temperature differences

People usually thought that the heat and temperature

are the same thing
But these two concept are different form each other.

Temperature
 Refers to the relative hotness or coldness of an object
 It refers to the average energy of the motions of the molecules in the
substance.
 It can be measured using a thermometer

Heat
 The total energy of the motion of the molecule of a substance
 The natural flow of heat is always from hot substance – cold substance
Or from a substance with a higher temperature to a substance with a lower temperature.

This is the reason why the spoon and mug became hotter in our example

The transfer of heat will stop when both objects reach the same
temperature.

HEAT TRANSFER
 The process wherein thermal energy is exchanged between objects due to their temperature
differences.
Elaborate The teacher will discuss the 3 methods of heat transfer

THE THREE METHODS OF

HEAT TRANSFER
 Conduction
 Convection
 Radiation

CONDUCTION
 Takes place between objects that are in direct contact with
each other.
 It means that heat energy is directly transferred through a
material.
 Most effective in solids

 We can observe this transfer of energy when cooking

 When the bottom of the pan is placed under the fire, the heat energy form the fire will be
transferred to the pan (that is why it becomes hot)
 As the pan becomes hotter the heat energy will be transferred to the food that is placed on it
 This is the reason why the food gets to cook and also
becomes hot.
 What do you think is the reason why cooking pans are
made of metals?
 Because they are good conductors of heat.
 Conductors- are materials that allow thermal energy to
readily flow through them. Metals like silver, copper,
steel and aluminum are good conductors of heat

CONVECTION
 On the other hand
 Insulator are the materials that transfer heat poorly.
 Some of the kitchen utensil have plastic, rubber or wood handles to prevent heat and burn.
 Effective in fluids
 Fluids are any material that flows like
liquid and gases.
 Method of heat transfer through the
circulation of liquid and gas
 Transfer of energy by the rising or sinking
of matter due to density differences
 A good illustration is boiling water inside a
container
 When the water molecules at the bottom of the container is
heated become less dense, since they became less dense they
will rise.
 On the other hand the cooler and denser sink will start sinking.
 When the molecule is already in the bottom they it will start to
heat again and becomes less dense and eventually rise again.
RADIATION
 Heat moves through empty space (outer space)
 No medium like water, air, nor any solid material where heat
can travel through.
 Radiation is the transfer of heat by means of electromagnetic
waves
 We feel heat coming from the sun because of radiation

Evaluate Wrap-up!
The Teacher will divide the class into 5 and play “Who Wants to Be a millionaire” whoever gets
the correct answer will earn points.
Extend Assignment

Direction: Create a digital interpretation of the heat transfer method using your cellphone devices.
